I can’t believe its Spring 2016 and that I have been president of HSMT for almost a year. A wonderful year with so many wonderful things that happened! So many people have given their time and talents that have made it so and I could never thank them all enough, but a special thanks to Dixie. How she does all she does and we could never manage if we didn’t have her. Our Fall Harvest Dinner in October set it off with a wonderful evening chaired by Kim Looney and Carla Nelson. The dinner catered by Danielle Kates was wonderful, and a special thanks to David Edwards and his Backyard Bluegrass Band! The chrysanthemums at Cheekwood were in full bloom and so many pumpkins. Beautiful!! Then came December and the ever popular Martinis & Mistletoe with Hayley Phipps and Amanda Smith making it a sell-out and a huge success. Then three days later the Sparkling Settings Luncheon and how beautiful it was! Babs Freeman did a fantastic and glorious job with a huge crowd. Our Fall Harvest Dinner in October set it off with a wonderful evening chaired by Kim Looney and Carla

85 Years and Growing… How quickly the last ten years have flown since HSMT celebrated the 75th anniversary of the founding of the Horticultural Society. As chairman of that splendid event – with a luncheon and garden tour – I am yet amazed at the accomplishments in the past decades. The garden club movement began with 12 ladies in Athens Georgia in 1891 who adhered to the sharing of knowledge and accomplish-ments in the growing of plants. The program intensified and spread across the region. Mrs. Jesse Overton of The Garden Club of Nash-ville showed an interest in the movement, and her club became one of the 13 charter members of the National Council of Garden Clubs. It was known as The Tennessee Club. The Horticultural Society of Davidson County was formed in 1931 with Mrs. Jesse Overton as president with an early focus on landscape design and flower show schools. From that time the Horticultural Society and The Tennessee Federation have worked side by side to achieve these goals. In 1960, the culmination of every gardener’s dream was the acquisition of our beautiful botanic garden and museum of art at Cheekwood. At that time an endowment was established in Mrs. Overton’s honor. Funds from Trees of Christmas and in later years, memorials to the Horticultural Society, were added to this fund. Another goal of our founders was to sponsor local flower shows. In May, the Horticultural Society will celebrate its 85th anniversary with our biennial flower show in Botanic Hall chaired through the years by our own nationally recognized garden lover, Juanita Allinder. We can look back in time to 1931 and visualize the ladies with hats and gloves attending their afternoon meetings in downtown Nashville at the Hermitage Hotel. Fast forward 85 years to the west of the city to the beautiful gardens of Cheekwood culminating the hopes and dreams of the Horticultural Society’s mission. On a more personal note, for the past two decades my own Singing Hills Garden Club has entertained Cheekwood’s gardeners and maintenance staff on the second Friday of July with a pot luck and appreciation lunch. What a treat to become friends with these wonderful men and women. A big “shout out” to these vital, valuable people!

Cocktails 6:30 pm Spring Buffet Supper

Botanic Hall at Cheekwood

Howe Wild’s proceeds benefit Cheekwood’s beautiful Howe Garden. The Garden Club of Nashville undertook the 1968 relocation of the Howe Garden to its current site at Cheekwood. In 2012, the successful renovation of the Garden enhanced the fulfillment of the Howe Garden’s mission to grow and display rare and common native flora and to encourage conservation and use of native plants in the landscape.

The dramatic and rapid disappearance of our pollinators across the United States is one of the greatest risks not only to our gardens at Cheekwood and at our homes, but to our food supply. Honey Bees, native bees and monarch butterflies are examples of pollinators whose numbers are a fraction of what they were 10 years ago.

Howe Wild 2016 celebrates our pollinators. If you are interested in attending, please email [email protected] or call Sarah Lowe 615 353-2159

Sparkling Settings 2015 THANK YOU… to the table hostesses who decorated the most amazing tables. THANK YOU… to everyone who filled those marvelous gift baskets. THANK YOU… to all who made goodies for the bake sale. THANK YOU… to everybody attending this ‘SO MUCH FUNRAISER’.

Whether you worked for weeks on a table design, shopped for days to fill a basket, baked for hours to make delectable treats or just came to enjoy the day. It’s all about, sitting at a spectacular table while visiting with good friends. Bidding on a basket, to give as that special gift. Buying baked items to enjoy during the holi-days or other delightful items from the Holiday Shoppe.

THANK YOU…to everyone who helped raise almost $18,000.

Special thanks to Patrick Larkin for being a scintillating auctioneer for the live auction items. Special thanks to Martha Phipps for overseeing the Holiday Shoppe and her idea of adding the Bake Sale to the Shoppe this year. HSMT has some incredible bakers and next year, Martha hopes to fill more tables with scrumptious treats. There were a few newbies this year. Dean Reeves, HSMT’s President, had never been before and “never knew it would be this much fun”. Betty Hunt has worked at the check-in desk at Sparkling Settings for years and was “so excited to actually be decorating a table and sit inside Massey Hall”. Sow and Grow Garden Club was new to Sparkling Settings this year. I heard the most comments about their Golden Girls table… “isn’t it just darling”. Hope everyone will be back next year for this dazzling fund raiser and I promise pitchers of water will be placed on each table and we will not run out of wine. CALL FOR DOCENTS

Cheekwood seeks energetic and engaging volunteers to join our Docent

Program. Docents act as volunteer teachers and tour guides, sharing

their passion for art, history and horticulture with visitors of all ages, in-

cluding up to 10,000 Middle Tennessee school children each year.

Cheekwood offers weekday and weekend shift options for docents.

Prospective docents must submit an application by Wednesday, Febru-

ary 17, 2016 at 5:00 p.m. If accepted into the program, docents in training must commit to an 8 week

training course beginning February 29, 2016 and an initial two year service period following gradua-

tion. Please contact Shannon Hautman, Cheekwood’s Director of Education and Public Programs to

apply:

[email protected] or 615-353-6972.

ABOUT CHEEKWOOD’S DOCENT PROGRAM

Docents are key members of Cheekwood’s team and consistently act as the face of the organization

for general visitors, school groups, and private tours. Docents provide educational information about

our permanent and temporary exhibitions, gardens, and historical residence. Docents are assigned to

give tours and act as educational hosts throughout Cheekwood’s property, which encompasses multi-

ple buildings and 55 acres of gardens and varied landscape. Staff members in the Education, Muse-

um, and Garden departments work closely with docents to ensure they have the skills and information

necessary to provide high quality information to visitors. Participation in the Docent program is enrich-

ing and dynamic, and provides opportunities for life-long learning and community involvement.

Martinis & Mistletoe

Martinis & Mistletoe 2015 was our most successful ever - selling out four days early! Chairs Hayley Phipps and Amanda Smith decked out Cheekwood’s Massey Hall in silver and gold with music throughout from Band 24/7. Nashville’s popular eateries and caterers offered their special delights while Cheekwood’s gorgeous Holiday Lights display outside enticed guests to stroll through the festively lighted gardens.

Mark your calendars for Friday, December 2nd and be sure to buy your tickets early as we anticipate another sell-out to one of Nashville’s most popular holiday parties.

Martinis & Mistletoe 2016 will be chaired by Stefanie Carter and Anna Gernert. Tickets will be available online in the fall at www.hsmtn.org

Tender Loving Care for Houseplants

My friend and garden club member, Norma Smith, believes that talking to her plants really works. She tells them how pretty they are, and that she wants them to grow and thrive. Some studies have proven that the female voice and music does positively affect plant growth. Since all plants require different soil, moisture and light/heat conditions, it is also

important to choose the proper location in the home for each plant. When buying new plants, follow tag directions for best results.

NGC certified horticultural instructor, Pam Braun, suggests using a soiless mixture of

peat, pine bark, vermiculite or perlite as a potting soil. Some plants such as orchids, succu-lents, and roses require special mixes. Fellow garden club member, Marilyn Sutcliffe, has great results with a fertilizer from Lee Valley Co. called Wegeners, but most liquid fertilizers, such as Monty’s Joy Juice, will work. Besides appropriate amounts of water and sunshine or heat, levels of humidity are important. For dry conditions in winter, caused from heating the home, consider using a humidifier or spraying plants between watering schedules. Marilyn says her orchid plant blooms continuously in her kitchen/garden window because of the moist humidity from the sink.

To keep plants healthy it is important to maintain proper container size. As plants

begin to grow, repot them in a larger container to prevent roots from becoming pot bound. When watering, plants should drain slowly. Never place plants near a draft or a direct heat source such as a fireplace. Control pest problems with insecticidal soap.

NASA experiments indicate that garden mums can remove toxins such as ammonia,

benzene, formaldehyde, and xylene. Other recommended plants that promote clean air and the removal of toxins are the spider plant, dracaena, ficus tree, peace lily, Boston fern, snake plant, bamboo palm, and aloe. Plants that grow well in shady areas of the home include ferns, lucky bamboo, spider plant, golden pothos vine, mother-in-law’s tongue, dracaena, and Aechmea bromeliad.

I am in love with air plants ( Epiphytes), native to Florida and Central America. Since

their specialized leaves absorb water and nutrients, they need no soil or water. They require a moist shady location and fertilizing only in spring or summer with a quarter strength of a liquid fertilizer. Mist twice weekly and they are happy. Air plants have a blooming cycle if nurtured properly. The air fern is an awesome plant that requires only a bi-weekly misting. Place them in a natural setting of rocks and seashells for an interesting effect. You may purchase air plants online or purchase them in Nashville at Im-port Flowers located at 3636 Murphy Road. Bates Nursery at 3810 Whites Creek Pike carries them in the spring and summer. For photos of air plants, visit pinterest.com.

I must now go and repot my root bound house plants

and practice what I preach.

VOLUNTEER at CHEEKWOOD While spring is just around the corner, we do want to take a moment to reflect back to Cheekwood’s highly successful inaugural winter display, Holiday Lights. This spectacle drew nearly 46,000 local and out-of-town visitors and was made possible with the support and assistance of 322 volunteers, many of them mem-

bers of area garden clubs. A special tip of the hat to members of First Saturday Garden Club of Ashland City; Optimistic Gardeners; Sew and Sow; Singing Hills ; Pulaski; Grapevine; Friends and Flowers; Seed and Weed; and Iris City, all HSMT garden clubs who helped with exhibit prep and as Hosts. Kudos!

Now, about spring. As usual, there is an abundance of volunteer opportunities about to burst upon the scene! Among them---

Cheekwood’s talented gardeners always can use a helping hand this time of year, whether clearing or cleaning beds, planting, or even assisting with a greenhouse project. Whether you’d like to come assist regularly or once in a while, our gardeners would welcome your help in tending our beautiful specialty gardens. Join this exceptional team on Tuesdays and certain Saturdays or Sundays, 10:00-noon, as they tackle the project of the day. The garden team swings back into operation late February/early March, with some greenhouse projects needing help as early as mid-February.

Spend a morning assisting at our popular Tuesdays for Tots program. This drop-in arts class for pre-schoolers meets weekly from 10-noon. Volunteers support the young artists as they create the day’s activity;

Cheekwood in Bloom, held each Saturday and Sunday from March 19 through April 23, offers fami-lies the chance to participate in a variety of arts activity stations from 9 till 2.

Our annual Art Hop is set for March 26. With thousands of guests coming to enjoy the egg hunts, arts activities, lawn games and more, we’ll need dozens of helpers during this fun day.

If you’re outgoing, enjoy interacting with our visitors and sharing all that is Cheekwood with them, consider joining our Visitor Services team. We’ll need volunteers at Visitor Services during the busy weekends of Bloom and Art Hop to greet guests, give out information and distribute wrist-bands. Shifts are 9-12 and 12-3.

Other assignments crop up as needed, such as help with a mailing, with Home School Day, a green-house project, etc. Most assignments are for 2-3 hours. If you’d like to be notified when one of these assignments is scheduled, let the Volunteer Office know.

Come be with us as we shake off the winter doldrums and enjoy spring at Cheekwood! For more information about these or other opportunities, or to sign up, please contact the Volunteer Office at 615-353-6966 or at [email protected]. We welcome you to join (or return to) the best volunteer team in Nashville!

Happy 40th Anniversary to SOW & GROW Garden Club!

We began our celebration at Franklin's historic Carnton House Gardens....followed with a beautiful backyard luncheon at the home of Lynn Fleischer, one of 6 founding members in attendance. We honored founding member, Molly Schneider, who has been so important in keeping our club focused and preserving our history. We treasure our founding members who continue to be active in all club activities, and look forward to many more celebrations! Here’s to the next 40!
