It’s a relief when the evenings become lighter and workdays finish with prospects like going to the beach and having barbecues.

With the weather change comes the wardrobe overhaul. I’m a fan of the capsule concept, having several pieces that seamlessly transfer from winter to the warmer months and are easily jazzed up with a collection of on-trend pieces. I’m thankful white and stripes are in this season as I won’t have to stray too far from my go-to looks.

I should be braver though, and delve into the world of colour we’re faced with every spring and summer. It occurred to me recently that the fashion world is full of brave people, willing to take the plunge and put their designs out there for the whole world to see, despite the fact it can be such a critical industry.

Christchurch designer Wendy Jerard has shown her commitment to the fashion world over and over. Last year she welcomed New Zealand Fashion Week with a Sky Tower bungy jump, while this year, she went swimming with sharks.

It seems budding Christchurch designers are taking the leap, too. Paula Peck has decided the time is right, after raising a family, to pursue her passion for design at Hagley School of Fashion. Read about Paula and three other designers on track to make their dreams come true on page 11.

What’s been great, too, is learning about places that give emerging designers a means by which to showcase and sell their works. Denyse Saunders hosts many of them on the catwalk at Canterbury Fashion Beauty Week, while stores like Wanderer (The Tannery) and The Collective (The Colombo) make space for everyone. Young designer Hannah Rutherford sells her collections at both (page 20).

Here at Fashion, we challenge you to be brave with your style choices this season.

Best wishes, Daisy

Timeless style for the

modern womanSynonymous with minimalist construction, JNBY’s spring/summer 2015-2016 collections are brimming with stunning foundation and statement pieces that are guaranteed to breathe new life into any wardrobe.

Unique architectural details, such as asymmetrical seams and hemlines, and unexpected darting and gathering of fabric, give each hand-crafted garment a fresh, yet enduring style, which people will return to again and again, year after year.

Taking women effortlessly from work to play, day to night, simple silhouettes in luxurious natural fabrics, like silk, chiffon, linen and cotton, drape beautifully over the human form and wear well, and feel like a second skin, allowing the wearer’s inner beauty to shine through.

Icy whites star this season with a neutral palette of cream, ivory and warm mocha, giving way to an earthy moss colour and khaki. Inky blacks are softened with smoky

charcoal and soft grey, while muted teal, brilliant blue, canary yellow and bold red add a splash of colour to enliven earthy tones and basic blacks.

Tailored tuxedo jackets and blazers hang elegantly off the body, while tunics, dresses and skirts fall mostly below the knee or

skim the ankles in light, billowy fabrics. Cropped pants are key,

as are relaxed fit, full-length trousers, which look

smart when teamed with a tailored ‘boy’ shirt or worn under one of this season’s many tunics.

Transitioning from winter to summer

is simple with this season’s easy-to-wear,

midi-length cardigan. With side pockets and button

detailing on the cuff, the cardigan’s luxurious, soft cotton

hangs beautifully off the body and keeps a chilly breeze at bay. Layered over dresses, tunics and trousers, the midi-length cardigan epitomises JBNY’s uncomplicated aesthetic.

Summer is all about soaking up the rays on long, sun-kissed days. It’s about barbecues, leisurely walks along the beach and enjoying a drink (or two) al fresco, while catching up with friends and family.

The new Untouched World spring/summer collection was created with all of this in mind, and the result is a clever concoction of multi-functional pieces that will take people wherever they want to go.

Untouched World is renowned for creating top-notch knitwear, and this season’s summer capsule is divine. Beautifully fine ocean sweaters and cardigans fit perfectly, and come in punchy, tropical-inspired colours, while airy rockpool wraps and long-line cardigans offer an air of calm in soothing neutral tones.

Those allergic to ironing will love the luxe linen styles. They are deliberately created crinkly so the iron can stay in the cupboard. The new merino modal blend is another must have with its beautifully soft handle and weightlessness, creating tops and dresses that drape like a dream.

For the boys, the cotton cove jacket and placket sweater offer a comfortable take on denim, morphing effortlessly between

casual and smart. Pair them over the new striped tees and polos for sophistication

with a laid-back vibe. When it comes to cultivating a wardrobe for work and play, the new fine merino versus sweaters are perfect. For the office, team them up with a shirt and chinos,

and off-duty with a t-shirt and shorts. See the full Untouched World summer

2015-2016 collection at the flagship store and café in Roydvale Ave or visit their pop-up store in Re: Start Mall for

The jubilant arrival of spring heralds the beginning of wedding season. Park Avenue Fashions is excited to see a range of beautiful new colour palettes in a variety of diverse styles and fabrics to make ladies feel a million dollars at their next special event.

Specialising in all types of special-occasion wear, Park Avenue Fashions offers a substantial collection of dresses, evening gowns and formal outfits to suit a range of different occasions, from cruise-ship attire through to the whole wedding party.

As one of the South Island’s biggest importers of accessories, Park Avenue Fashions proudly offers the widest range of hats and fascinators to match every outfit.

This summer, chiffon is the favoured fabric as it achieves a soft, feminine look, while popular lace offers a more structured look. Park Avenue Fashions owner Sonia Caird says beaded embellishments on wedding and ball gowns, and Cup and Show Week outfits are still a key feature.

Sonia says popular hues arriving for spring and summer include captivating corals, serene sky blues, platinum and a range of pretty pastel pinks in a wide range of styles to flatter every woman’s figure, from 6 to 24, and suit all personalities.

Many of Park Avenue’s outfits are imported directly from Spain and therefore it is receiving many of the very latest styles and colours directly from the European summer.

“We are also very selective about which styles and colours we order, often only having a limited edition of numbers in store, with many outfits and dresses being one-offs,” Sonia says.

For special occasion requirements, pop into Park Avenue Fashions at 363 Lincoln Rd in Addington. Car parking is alongside the railway line or peruse a selection of formal attire and accessories online.

Model searches for success in the StatesLaura Williams is seeking the next step of her modelling career in Florida.

At a time when most teenagers will be celebrating the end of their exams and getting ready for Christmas, Laura Williams, 16, will be jetting off to Orlando, Florida.

She will be taking part in a week-long opportunity of a lifetime. She, along with four other Christchurch-based models, will be given the chance to take part in modelling workshops and audition for international agents.

It’s all thanks to a school holiday programme run by Denyse Saunders Model Management, which Laura completed in April last year. Laura admits she had never imagined herself as a model, and took Denyse’s course to learn about makeup and gain confidence. However, Denyse spotted her potential, asked if Laura would like to take part in Canterbury Fashion Beauty Week, and the rest is history.

Since then, she has modelled in three Canterbury Fashion Beauty Week shows and is looking forward to her fourth at the Tannery (October 6 to 9), which will showcase summer collections and awards.

Although her mother is joining her on the trip to the US, Laura knows the time in Orlando is no family holiday. There will be five intensive days of workshops

and interviews with casting agents from organisations such as Disney. She was chosen to audition for workshops in photographic modelling, swimwear, catwalk and television commercials. “Although I like modelling, I hope to use it as the start of a career in journalism and television presenting, although I am also auditioning for acting roles,” Laura says.

Denyse Saunders is proud that five of her protégés have this amazing opportunity. “I’m passionate about helping young people be the best they can be and also protecting them in a particularly tough industry,” she says. “Young talent needs to be guided in the correct way, not just with industry advice, but with lifestyle advice as well.”

The other four hopefuls are Brenna Wadsworth, 19, Hannah Braddick, 15, as well as brothers Elliot Beulink, 20, and Campbell Beulink, 21.

this season take people back to the ‘60s and ‘70s, during which rich jewel tones contrast with crisp, clean whites. fabrics taking precedence this spring will appeal to a softer side, with sheer chiffons, luxurious natural silks, crisp cottons and beautiful lace detailing.

inspired collection takes to the

catwalk

Canterbury Fashion Beauty Week provides a perfect start for emerging designers.

the driving force behind october’s canterbury fashion beauty week, Denyse saunders, knows that there is talent bubbling up everywhere in christchurch and she believes in nurturing and mentoring it. that’s why her prestigious event is giving four up-and-coming designers the chance to show their first collections on the catwalk.

youngest of the four is findlay currie; he is one of three attending the Hagley School of Fashion. His label, findlay sam, is presenting a collection of women’s dresses inspired by wonderland. “fashion is something i’ve been interested in for only about a year, but now i couldn’t think of doing anything else,” he says.

He hopes the event will help him achieve his dream of travelling to London and working for a major fashion house before creating his own brand. while fin is keen to learn tailoring skills too, he believes that women’s clothing provides him with more opportunity to be creative. “i see fashion as an art form; people who are fashion designers are artists,” he says.

Paula Peck’s first love was fashion and although she won a place at the fashion school at Massey university

in wellington, travel and family intervened. now, she has gone full circle and is also studying at Hagley school of fashion. “it is providing the perfect creative environment for me to flourish and develop design, construction and pattern-drafting skills,” she says.

Her label, Pippa, focuses on designing clothes that flatter a woman’s body and she likes to put twists on classic garments. Paula, 43, prefers a more feminine silhouette than some of the current androgynous styles. “i want to make clothes that flatter and accommodate a real kiwi woman’s shape,” she says. she is already planning to start marketing her work through small retailers.

The third Hagley-based designer is brooklyn-born nephtalim antoine. neph, 24, has been in christchurch for a decade, but his passion for fashion goes back several generations. His great grandfather was a tailor and his grandmother was a master seamstress, so the industry is in his blood. His collection will feature pieces for both men and women, and he takes his inspiration from his father’s family’s roots. they hail from trinidad and tobago. the carnivals held there are what neph

His collection will feature pieces for both men and women, and he takes his inspiration from his father’s family’s roots. they hail from trinidad and tobago. the carnivals held there are what neph

has used to base his collection on. He is using tropical patterns and the colours of the Caribbean. He especially loves bespoke tailoring and his look is very clean, modern and elegant.

All mAde upMichele McConnochie decides it’s about time she

learned makeup tips from a professional.

Like many other women, I learned my makeup style as a teenager and haven’t changed since; knowing it was time for an update, I headed to the highly qualified and experienced Nicky Blue of Bespoke Cosmetic in Cashmere.

Operating from her welcoming and private in-house consulting rooms, Nicky takes the anxiety out of learning about colours, fashions and techniques. She believes in making makeup fun, and that fits her clients and their lifestyle. By the end of my lesson, I knew how to apply healthy-looking blusher, how to make my eyebrows stronger and how to apply mascara properly. (Hint, don’t apply it to the inner lashes; it makes your eyes look closer together.) She used Youngblood Mineral Cosmetics, which is cruelty-free and has no nasty chemicals. The foundation felt great, gave me smooth coverage and I felt confident I looked natural but still put together.

Nicky is also moving with the times and has recently trained in micropigmentation. Also

called cosmetic tattooing, the technique puts pigment into the skin where people have lost hair detail, colour or pigmentation of their own. As a makeup artist, Nicky knows that eyebrows frame a face and make it look dressed, but

many women lose their eyebrows for various reasons. Now, there is a

long-term solution. As Nicky shows me the equipment, I

see how important health and safety and hygiene

are to her. When I ask if it hurts, she laughs. “Everyone asks that,” she says. “I use two types of topical anaesthetic, so most people hardly notice it

being done.”The treatment can

be used for a variety of purposes and areas

of the body. As well as eyebrows, Nicky can apply

semi-permanent eyeliner and lip liner, significantly reduce the

appearance of scarring and reinstate a natural-looking nipple and areola area after breast surgery.

While just having a makeup lesson gave me a lift, for many of Nicky’s clients, micropigmentation can be a life-changer.

She believes in making makeup fun, and that fits her clients and their

lifestyle.

Over recent years, Christchurch’s clothing industry has been in decline, but up-and-coming entrepreneurs are determined to turn back the tide.

One such young designer is Hannah Rutherford. With a Bachelor of Design in Fashion and Marketing from Massey University as well as experience working as a visual merchandiser, she has recently launched her own label, Hannah Claire, and already her highly wearable garments are available at Wanderer at The Tannery and The Collective at The Colombo.

Hannah believes in keeping it homegrown. Currently, she is responsible for all stages of the production of her collections, from design and pattern-making through to sewing, but ultimately she aims to employ locals to help her as the brand grows.

She values the backing she has received from established designers in Christchurch. “It’s really important to support emerging talent, and innovations like The Collective at The Colombo benefits both parties; it’s

Freshgreat to see something like that popping up in Christchurch.”

Hannah has two seasonal ranges online: one for summer and one for winter – both adaptable for spring and autumn’s variable weather. “My style is classic and timeless. I don’t focus directly on trends. Instead, my collections are monochrome and very wearable,” she explains. “The pieces interchange well with an existing wardrobe. They are simple and designed to mix and match.”

Some of the pieces she sees on catwalks just aren’t accessible to ordinary women. Instead, Hannah Claire is about clothing that is unfussy and easy to wear.

The same practicality combined with style and elegance is repeated in her popular bridesmaids’ dresses. Available in a choice of fabrics and colours, these dresses are flattering and versatile enough to be worn again, long after the big day.

Perfect place for high tea

Pink Sugar is a beautiful place to experience the enchantment and delight of high tea inspired by yesteryear.

The moment people arrive, they realise that there’s something very special about the gorgeous vintage high tea café. When they sit and soak up the atmosphere, it becomes apparent that every tiny detail has been attended to with love and care.

Its creator and owner, Sally Sergeant, decided that since she could not find the perfect place to take tea, she would invent it herself.

“I have had this vision for about 15 years, but, of course, was very busy with my young family,” she says. “The time arrived where it was a possibility, and I had to decide if I wanted to reach the end of my life thinking, ‘I wonder if it would have worked.’”

It appears she has really hit the mark for her target customers. It’s pink, it’s pretty and it’s cute. Feminine touches like vintage rose wallpaper, crystal chandeliers and

fine china all contribute to making patrons feel very spoilt. Even the bathrooms have had the Pink Sugar treatment – individual hand towels, chandeliers, flowers and complimentary handcream.

Pink Sugar specialises in tea, and Sally is exclusively importing a premier range from the UK, Whittard of Chelsea, to ensure customers experience the finest tea experience available. There is an extensive range on offer on the tea menu, and even more variety available packaged for purchase.

“We sell a lot of Whittard of Chelsea for gifts, there’s just so much choice and it is perfect for someone who has everything,” Sally says.

The café stocks varieties of black, green, white and herbal tea, along with sumptuous fruit infusions, which are able to be brewed and enjoyed hot or cold.

“People have such complimentary things to say about their experience at Pink Sugar. I’m just so pleased that others are enjoying my vision,” Sally says.

Pink Sugar caters for large groups of up to 30 for special events such as bridal showers, baby showers and birthdays, and even offers cupcake decorating and a children’s high tea for young ladies wanting something lovely for a birthday celebration. In October, it will be hosting its first wedding.

“I just wanted to create ‘my happy place’, and I’m so glad that other people are finding it to be their happy place too,” Sally says.

The friendly staff, wearing vintage dresses and smiles, share Sally’s passion for customer service and the desire to help customers experience the delight that is Pink Sugar.

Drawing on her 20 years’ of knowledge and experience in the textile industry, Marmalade Clothing owner Jessica Fearnley-Campbell brings Cantabrians a personally curated collection of fresh fashion with a clear conscience.

Jessica gives careful consideration to the ethical standards behind the products she stocks; Marmalade is the exclusive stockist of fair trade brands Nomads Clothing and Braintree Clothing. She also proudly supports Christchurch fashion brands Tava and Chalkydigits, alongside many local jewellery designers, including Hello Lovely, Rainey Designs, Stone Arrow, and Two Lyttel Buttons, and hand-crafted jewellery and fashion accessories from Trade Aid NZ and Freeset.

Jessica’s passion for colour and in-depth knowledge of fabric is reflected in the fashion ranges, which feature a muted colour palette of chambray, indigo, teal, and dusky pink. Spring prints are inspired by Asian adventures, with pretty mosaics, exotic birds, tropical blooms and ethnic tile graphics. Natural fibres are a strong focus with Marmalade’s collections made with organic cotton, New Zealand merino, bamboo, modal and hemp.

This spring, coloured skinny jeans, three-

quarter length sleeve bamboo tops, pocket dresses and culottes are all key wardrobe staples. Moving into summer, Marmalade is expecting a wide selection of floaty maxi dresses to keep ladies cool when the temperatures begin to climb.

Men’s fashion at Marmalade continues to bring a range of organic cotton smart-casual shirts and New Zealand-made cotton T-shirts, alongside their popular unisex range of Braintree bamboo socks. Just like merino, bamboo is luxuriously soft and breathable, with antibacterial and antifungal properties. “If you buy nothing else this season, treat your feet at Marmalade,” Jessica says.

Bohemian romantic meets preppy chic

Step out in Style

Spring heralds an injection of fresh wardrobe inspiration at Country Lane.

Rangiora fashion boutique, Robe, is the one-stop-shop for spring and summer wardrobe staples and head-turning statement pieces.

Rejuvenate wardrobes for the changing season ahead with timeless pieces to return to year after year, and introduce fashion-forward designs to instantly update much-loved favourites.

“This season it’s all about the dress,” Country Lane’s owner Terese O’Sullivan says. Structured styles from Seduce and Zafina suit the modern woman and feminine cuts flatter the figure are offered in a range of prints and colour palettes from Danish brand Noa Noa and Loobie’s Story.

Classic beauties will love spring’s romance with pastel hues of dusky pinks and baby blues, while attention seekers will lap up vibrant pops of melon, azure and shocking pink.

Bohemian chic enters stage left with feminine florals in floaty fabrics and preppy spots, and stripes take the spotlight in the form of pants and tops, and knitwear from the likes of Episode, 1946, Sills, and Isaac + Lulu.

Two new labels to feature in the spring lineup are Auckland labels Shen and Dalston. Favouring sophisticated, clean lines for the modern woman, Shen’s global style references the designer’s inspired trips to Japan,

Europe and LA, while Dalston’s new spring collection features playful florals in a range of feminine dresses.

Favourite shoe designer Kathryn Wilson offers a beautiful range of styles for feet this spring, alongside fashion accessories and jewellery to complete any look.

Visit Country Lane at 140 High Street in Rangiora to inject new life into any wardrobe this season. Stay in touch with the newest styles arriving regularly in store on Facebook.

Dresses in the new midi length, with hemlines falling just below the knee or skimming the calf, are making a comeback this season, in a variety of styles ranging from the classic shift dress to figure-hugging cocktail dresses, halter necks and flirty strapless numbers.

According to Robe owner Rachel hobson, “navy is the new black”, and chambray is the hottest fabric this summer, seen in casual, yet elegant duster coats, shift dresses, jackets and pants. Distressed boyfriend jeans are also big this summer with high-fashion global brands LTB, Mavi and Pepe.

Joining the lineup of new Zealand brands, Augustine and Charlo, Ketz-ke, and locally designed Ivy Blu, is LA husband and wife design duo, Dear Creatures, with a range of gorgeous party dresses sporting original prints and unique detailing.

Plan the perfect Race Day outfit with Robe’s own brand, end of story, which offers a mix of easy-to-wear floaty, feminine kimonos, and dresses and tops in a pastel palette of pink, apricot, mint and classic black and white, featuring this season’s obsession with the cold shoulder.

Complete outfits with Robe’s wide range of footwear and fashion accessories.

Choose from ankle boots, stilettos, sneakers and sandals, and pick a pair of jandals from havaianas’ vibrant summer collection for the beach. Finally, add the finishing touches with exotic, colourful, handmade crystal jewellery by Lil and beaded bohemian pieces from Mrs Pretty.

One for the boys

Working Style’s young-gun duo is combining classic tailoring with contemporary trends.

Show Week tips

Classic tailoring and men’s fashion have a fresh, young approach thanks to David McNeill and Ollie McKenna. They are now at the helm of Working Style in Merivale, and are injecting some exciting new ideas into this well-established, family-owned business.

David, the southern director, is keen to nurture existing relationships with clients. “Many loyal customers have been shopping with us for the past 13 years, since we first opened in 2002. Since we relocated after the earthquake, it’s been really exciting to see lots of new faces coming to Christchurch with the rebuild and enjoying our accessible location and easy parking.”

Ollie is relishing his new role as manager and loves the new direction they are taking. “We want to be more advice-based and personal with our clients,” he explains.

“We have always built long-lasting relationships and because we know what our customers already have in their wardrobe, it’s easy for us to help them choose new pieces that build on that.”

They plan to give the store a more modern, contemporary look, in keeping with Working Style’s national approach. There will be a space for customers to drop in and socialise, even have a drink on their way home after work. They want shopping to become an experience, not a chore and have more of a focus on one-on-one service and advice to help customers make their selections.

They believe that fashion should be fun. “We like to throw a good party,” David says. “We plan to run more annual events, including an upcoming fashion show.”

Words Michele McConnochie

What will the best-dressed racegoers be wearing this New Zealand Cup and Show week? David McNeill has some tips.

“Men’s tailoring will be much more relaxed with lots of cottons and linens,” he says.

Since the weather is usually warm during Cup and Show Week, softer construction and lightweight fabrics are a perfect choice for comfort as well as style. David suggests contrast chinos topped with blue or grey jackets, give an Italian feel with

an English twist. “Outfits should be approachable and familiar, but still interesting and a little bit different.”

His single greatest piece of advice is to take a leap of faith. “Try something out of your comfort zone,” he recommends. “You’ll be surprised at the response you get by pushing out the boat, and it’ll help you develop your personal style.” Look for trends such as suede elbow patches, half-lined garments, jackets with stunning linings, and colourful and contrasting stitching.

“Outfits should be approachable and familiar, but

still interesting and a little bit different.”

What did you love wearing as a child?

Well, it was the 1970s and my sister and I were dressed identically by our mother, so choices weren’t really a thing in our household. My favourite outfit was probably our matching Wombles of Wimbledon sweatshirts, closely followed by our matching triple denim/chambray ensembles.

Greatest style faux pas? See above! Also, dungarees = NO.

Who is your style icon and why? Frida Kahlo for her use of colour,

symbolism and cultural motifs, Akira Isogawa for his amazing fabrics and compassionate design (his support for environmental issues and animal rights) and Kowtow NZ for their fair trade organic fabrics and designs that make you feel freakin’ fabulous.

Best style advice you’ve ever been given?

Luckily for me, I have plenty of amazing women in my life who are not backward in coming forward. Here’s a selection: “Choose boobs or legs, not both.” “Even sensible knickers must be pretty.” “Always have big hair.” “When in doubt, add more accessories.”

What trends will you be following this spring/summer?

I’ll wait and see what filters through that I like. I tend to do my own thing most of the time, for better or for worse.

What’s the one accessory you can’t live without?

Jewellery! I can’t leave the house without a ton of it.

Longest surviving garment?

An amazing Akira hand-beaded skirt that I bought about 15 years ago. Only worn a handful of times… but it’s a friend for life.

Most indulgent purchase? See above! I fell in love with it in Plume in

Christchurch, but it was more than $1500, which is absolutely off the planet for me. Then, they had a massive sale and the girls rang to tell me it was down to $250! So obviously, I had to do it!

Pet fashion – ingenious or cringe-worthy?

Depends on the situation… small dogs need clothes to stay warm. I’m not judging. If the dog digs it, then all good!

“Old is the new new,” some say, and many of the world’s fashion leaders are looking backwards, not forwards, for the inspiration for their red carpet outfits. From Julia Roberts’ classic black and white Valentino 1982 dress to Reese Witherspoon’s stunning 1955 Christian Dior metallic embellished gown (found while shopping in a vintage boutique in Paris), retro has been given the Oscar nod of approval by the world’s most glamorous stars.

It has become the go-to alternative when there’s nothing new on the catwalk or in the store to take your fancy and you still want to make a statement that reflects your individuality. These are not pieces found on the racks of any department store, no matter how high end. Shopping vintage takes time and perseverance, with unique items to be found by dedicated hunting through op-shopw and specialist boutiques such as Madam Butterfly’s on Ferry Rd.

Owner Melanie Cavayé says her customers are an eclectic mix of ages and have different styles. Often, they are looking for outfits for themed events, special occasions or just everyday wear. “Good fashion is timeless and the quality of garments is far superior. You can get the

equivalent of a high-end dress for a fraction of the cost,” she says.

The popularity of wearing vintage in New Zealand shot up following the stunning runway show that Doris Raymond, star of TV’s LA Frockstars and owner of The Way We Wore, put on as part of Dunedin Fashion Week in April 2015.

If you do manage to bag a bargain, take good care of it. Vintage can be a wise investment. The top labels, especially if previously worn by a superstar, can sell for big bucks. And with demand for such garments growing, specialist collectors are fast pushing up the prices.

Because fashion changes almost daily, it’s easy to let your vintage garments make you look as if you’re heading to a costume party, but it’s also simple to keep the look fresh and modern. Choose pieces that are similar to modern trends and team with up-to-date accessories and modern hair and makeup styles. Mixing eras and old with new is a great way to add a funky edge to an outfit.

It doesn’t stop with clothing. Vintage extends to handbags, jewellery and even shoes. So, what exactly is the appeal? These pieces are of exquisite quality, with undeniably superb craftsmanship.

Making a comebackMichele McConnochie discovers that the vintage trend is simply

growing, and it’s being led by the celebrities.

Media is rife these days with cosmetic medicine disasters, some of us might admit to being drawn to tv shows like “My Botched Body”. Similar to that of what is seen on television or the internet, New Zealand is certainly not immune to improperly trained people undertaking procedures which can consequently mean poor results for the client. Many clients are worried by these portrayals, and come to cosmetic physicians nervously asking not to look “overdone”. So we sat down with Dr Jefferies of Koru Clinic and got some tips for choosing where to have your cosmetic medicine treatments to achieve the results you want!1. Have your treatment from trained and qualified doctors. Find out the training background of your doctor: make sure your treatments are undertaken by someone who has had formal cosmetic medicine qualifications. The only formal cosmetic medicine training and certification in New Zealand is an intensive two year course, through the New Zealand Society of Cosmetic Medicine. Guaranteeing your Cosmetic Medicine doctor has this training ensures your treatments will be of the highest standard.2. Have your treatments in an established clinic: Make sure the facility where you receive your treatments from is certified by the New Zealand Society of Cosmetic Medicine. This ensures that processes are in

place to ensure your treatments are held to the highest standards.3. Don’t look for “cheap” treatments overseas. We are seeing increasing numbers of people who return from a “Cosmetic Makeover Holiday” whilst on holiday overseas, with complications which can be very difficult and expensive to treat and at the very worst, disfiguring. Whilst cheaper procedures can be tempting, when you see a qualified cosmetic doctor in New Zealand, you are ensured safe techniques, and quality of follow-up.4. And lastly, find a doctor who will explain your treatment options to you, and who will listen to what your priorities are!

Dr Jefferies is the director of Koru Clinic, 31 Colombo St, Christchurch. Phone 03 372 3589

As important as regular trips to the gym or dentist, these days Cosmetic medicine treatments are accepted as commonplace. Many women consider regular treatments as part of their “maintenance”. However as Dr Jefferies from Koru Clinic once mentioned, ‘it is important to remember that making the most of your appearance is far more important than just outward looks – it can have positive effects on your self esteem and mental wellbeing’.

“Small classes and a small school mean we connect with all the teachers. They really know us and want us to succeed.”

“Girls only” means there is a real “Girl Power” feeling. There are no stereotypes about what we can and can’t do and girls get all the attention we need to learn. No girl is left behind.”

“There are so many leadership opportunities. The Year 8 Leadership Academy helps every single one of us to develop our leadership skills, not just a select few.”

“There is an expectation that we go out into the community and make a difference. We also work with mentors in the community who support us.”

“There are so many sporting, musical and cultural opportunities available to all girls. From Water Polo to Computer Science, String Ensemble to Chorale, Robotics to Envirogroup.”

“Awesome specialist and classroom teachers mean that there is a whole team of people who are supporting me in my learning and cheering me on. I have lots of advocates.”

Story

CAPTIONS4Abode Co-owners Sharne and Vanessa are doubling the size of their store to incorporate quality, international kitchen-ware and locally made dining furniture.

Show-stopping fashion at The Colombo

The Colombo’s much-anticipated second stage that welcomes an exciting new cast of 10 additional retailers was launched in conjunction with its lavish Food, Fashion and Design event on September 24.

Gracing the runway were Portfolio Models’ fresh faces who sported the new spring and summer season’s collections, many of whom were recently seen strutting their stuff at NZ Fashion Week, including NZFW’s hottest new female talent, Sarah Lake.

Toasting to the exciting culmination of months of hard work and planning, the Food, Fashion and Design event proudly unveiled the eclectic mix of fashion boutiques, homeware stores and eateries, opening their doors just in time for the new season.

The show-stopping dress came from Alice McCall’s spring collection, which is guaranteed to turn heads at any special occasion. The ‘Just The Way You Are’ dress is a sheer white, midi-length sheath with bold, burn-out floral print, worn over a mini-length backless slip that reveals a hint of bare skin and keeps the best bits under wraps. The spectacular number is exclusive to Zip Me Up.

The newest fashion label to The Colombo is Miss Crabb. Auckland designer, Kristine Crabb, creates her designs from her workroom above her Ponsonby store. Taking a subversive approach to shape, proportion and beauty, each garment transcends time, age and place. Skilfully designed and constructed, each piece imbues a timeless quality and is one of the few fashion labels still made on New Zealand shores.

Expect to see luxurious natural fibres, like silk, linen and cotton, in unique patterns cut personally by the designer herself, which delicately transform these natural materials into modern, yet quietly poetic and enduring pieces. See Miss Crabb’s extensive spring and summer collection arriving weekly at Rouche in the newly established Collective within The Colombo.

New kids on the block to join The Collective’s star-studded lineup are Christchurch designers Hannah Rutherford (Hannah Claire) and fashion duo Natalia Baird and Lucille Ness (Blackeyepeach).

Expectant mothers committed to their little tot’s style, as well as their own, will adore Bundle’s exclusive kids’ clothing brand with a difference, Rock Your Baby.

The Colombo is brimming with diversity and variety to satisfy every fashion desire and style this season.

Eat in or take me home

There are many exciting new developments in homewares to explore and tantalising culinary experiences to indulge in on every visit to The Colombo.

The Nordic Chill pop-up shop will be taking up permanent residence at The Colombo in one of the stores, showcasing carefully selected Ikea furniture and stylish Scandinavian designer homewares.

Abode is doubling in size to cater for its expanding selection of quirky gifts and homewares. Co-owners Sharne and Vanessa are adding new brands to the mix that focus on quality kitchenware, such as French-made Opinel knives, La Cuisine casserole dishes, colourful biodegradable tableware by Zuperzozial and locally made dining tables and chairs.

The Colombo’s new Antique Emporium will showcase heirloom treasures from the South Island’s favourite antique stores all under one roof. Those familiar with vintage emporium Reincarnation on Port Hills Road will be curious to visit Lineage, a venture by the owners’ sons that specialises in decorative Rocco French Antiques. Beloved Christchurch vintage retailer The Painted Room will be bringing its upcycled furniture and homewares back into the spotlight.

In the lead-up to Christmas, The Colombo will be open late on Thursdays and Fridays, when shoppers and moviegoers can enjoy a glass of wine and dinner. An open kitchen allows diners to chat with the chefs as they prepare delicious seasonal fare, and an up-and-coming local chef, who is still under wraps, promises to be a major draw for lovers of fine food.

Monthly First Thursdays events are in the heart of Sydenham and are not to be missed. The great night out for friends and families offers an array of food, fashion, art and design to inspire and invigorate. First established after the quakes by Art Beat, The Colombo proudly plays a key role in hosting and supporting this eclectic community event.

December’s event has a jungle theme, during which pony rides and a petting zoo will be set up in the carpark among an array of food trucks. Check out the Tiny Works Exhibition in The Colombo Gallery and peruse the night market, which is back by popular demand. Beer tastings, courtesy of Harrington’s Brewery, will be available at The Beer Library, with samples of the latest summer brews to taste.

Save the date for the next First Thursdays event on December 3.

The ever-expanding landscape of The Colombo means there are plenty of reasons to keep going back.
