Kuwait Petroleum Corporation has recently patronized the conference of “Empowering Women’s Leadership” which was organized by Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE). The conference, which is considered the first of its kind on the local and territorial level, is aimed to celebrate the female senior officials in the oil sector; in addition to enabling the young female personnel to be acquainted with the experience of their female senior employees in the oil sector particularly those whose work nature among oil fields and oil installations is hard. This hard work nature made them afford long working-hours on their sites.Indisputably, woman does not only represent half of the society, but she represents also a significant figure in the journey of development in the country particularly after the political leadership has thoroughly granted women their political rights; accordingly, woman has become a key partner in all fields as per the developmental ideology which is espoused to achieve a sustainable humanitarian development. However, woman managed efficiently through her smartness to invest all available opportunities to achieve tangible goals in the country’s various sectors on top of which the oil sector.Consequently, KPC was keen on patronizing the conference dubbed “Empowering Women Leadership”, which was recently convened in Kuwait, for several reasons among which the fact that the female employees who belong to the oil sector have proved their proficiency in each position they occupied up to the position of the Managing Director; the matter reflects their huge experience in administration and engineering fields. Also, KPC seeks diligently to root its concepts and combine them to its 2030 strategy. These concepts are epitomized in achieving the sustainable development through underpinning the concepts of the social responsibility to make the employees of the oil sector realize the importance of social interaction and its positive influence on all levels.

Oil spills & ways of treatment

KPC Newsletter resumes its series of articles on the oil culture. In this issue, we will continue spotlighting the ma-rine oil spills and their dangers against the marine environment and its organ-isms.As we know, the density of oil is light-er than water’s density; therefore, it floats on the surface of water. This oil patch covers a big area of water’s sur-face; the matter bans exchanging air which is full of oxygen with seawater. This deprives accordingly the water organisms of oxygen and light also which is required necessarily for the operations of assimilation in which oxygen is necessary element. There-fore, a large number of marine organ-isms perish and sometimes die out if they confront such oil spill intensively and continuously. These spills gather and form small balls impede the move-ment of boats and even the operations of fishing. Also, the oil compounds move through a nutritional series in the livers of the marine organisms

which in turn harm the consumers of these organisms whether they are people, animals or birds. Among the impacts of the oil compounds on the marine organisms what follows:

Fish resource becomes perishable • due to the hike in water’s acidity and the dearth of oxygen. The damage of fish’s respiratory • system. It leads to perishing birds which • are fed on marine organisms as they birds’ feathers get harmed when they sink in oil patch to hunt their food.It leads to the death of mollusks • and oysters particularly when the leakage reaches the coast. It negatively influences the proj-• ects of drinking water.

However, there are several ways to control oil spills biologically, me-chanically, chemically and so on. In this article, we will shed light on the biological way of controlling oil spills.

The biological oil spill controlThis way is based focally on using some bacteria which are able to dis-mantle the particles of hydrocarbons into small particles that can be dis-solved in water; thus, their negative influence becomes less. Yet, this natu-ral operation is very slow and it needs much time. However, some scientists discovered microscopic organisms can analyze the oil substances and convert them into very tiny drops. According-ly, some oil companies and special-ized chemical labs have applied such technology in treating the oil patches in seas and oceans.Furthermore, genetic scientists dis-covered a new way to treat the oil spills through hybridizing some kinds of bacteria altogether to produce a developed bacteria are able to absorb the poison of these oil substances and convert them into food. This way was applied to treat the problem of the oil lakes yielded from the Gulf War II and its results were amazing.
