Today you are going to write about your favourite character from the story. Remember as always you have to tell me why it is your favourite character, explaining why using examples from the story.

Data Handling

Today we are going to look at using a Tally charts and collecting data for a tally chart. A tally is a quick way of recording numbers amount in groups of 5 just like I do when you get a cube I make a tally as you collect the cubes.Here is an example of a tally chart for how some children get to school. Can you see how the tally is used to show the amount.

I would like you to create your own tally chart by observing the things around you. I would like you to go for a walk and to take a piece of paper and pencil with you to record your tallies for the following things.

When you get back find the total for each category. Keep your tallies safe ready for tomorrow’s lesson.

Parents if you don’t feel happy about going out and about then please adapt the list for things in your garden or stand outside the front of your house to make a tally. You might like to quickly draw a tally chart for them to fill in or keep it simple and write the category down the side of the paper.

Online Activity

Today is earth day all round the world so in order for you to do your bit to saving the planet, you are going to try not to create any more energy for the rest of the afternoon so I would like you to switch off your computer,

ipad/tablet, television etc and go outdoors to complete the outdoor activity or you might like to do some of the other outdoor activities I have already suggested. See how long you can last without any screentime?

Shadows

Because it is Earth day go outside. Can you see your shadow? Is it always in front of you or behind you? Try and run away from it if you can! Can you see shadows made by other things? Like trees, buildings, or other people. Or place a toy animal on a surface and see what shadow it makes (see the picture below)

Play a chasing game trying to step on each other’s shadows.

Make funny shadow shapes with your body.

Think about what makes a shadow, and why shadows are the shape they are.

Shadows are actually patches of dark because the light from the sun cannot pass through some materials, like your body!

A light source shines light on an object, but cannot pass through it, so a shadow (or patch of dark) appears on the opposite side.
