FARM PRODUCTION, FARM DISPOSITION, AND VALUE OF COTTON AND COTTONSEED AND RELATED DATA 1928-1942 l/

In this publication are brought together data, by States and for the United States, relative to cotton acreage; production, value and income from cotton lint and cottonseed; reduction from full yield of cotton from stated causes; commercial fer¬ tilizer used on cotton; and percentages of lint cotton marketed by months for the period 1928 to 1942,

\

The tables showing State estimates of cotton acreage planted and harvested by years, with yield per acre, production, price and value of lint combine data previously published -in annual reports and bring up to date comparable data published for the

period 1866 to 1938. Separate United States totals for American Egyptian cotton are also included.

Revised'estimates of production and utilization of cottonseed, season average price per ton, value of cottonseed produced and value of cottonseed sold to oil mills are shown for the various States, The revisions of cottonseed production are based on data relative to the ratio of cottonseed to cotton lint collected over the period by agencies within the Department, A uniform ratio of 65 pounds seed for each 35 pounds net lint was formerly used in computing production of cottonseed. The new series of estimates takes into account the variation between years and between States in the ratio of seed to lint. The net result of the cottonseed revision for the United States as a whole is a general reduction in the level of total production with a downward trend in the ratio of seed to lint plus seed. Revisions in cotton¬ seed production estimates naturally result in corresponding revision in value of production. Cottonseed data have not been revised for years prior to 1928, •

The cotton and cottonseed values shown are for the marketing season, or crop year, and should not be confused with calendar’ year income. The crop marketing season is

from August 1 to July 31 for all States except Texas where the marketing season, is July 1 to June 30, July sales in Texas are included in August at August prices,

i

The data on reduction from full yield per acre from stated causes are based upon re¬ turns’ from crop reporters made in March of each year, on a crop damage inquiry in which the reporters are asked to indicate the percent of a normal yield per acre of cotton .harvested the preceding year,, and the percent loss in yields due.to each of various stated causes. The resulting indicated percentages represent'the combined judgment: of the crop reporters and are useful as indexes of relative losses from the

stated causes.

Estimates of'the-total-acreage of cotton receiving commercial fertiliser, and the total tonnage and value of the commercial fertilizer used in cotton production represent calculations, based upon the Crop Reporting Board’s estimates of acreage of cotton in cultivation.pn -July 1, reported percentages of cotton acreage' fertilized, the quantity of fertilizer applied per acre, and the average price paid’ for ferti¬ lizer per ton. The averages of the replies to the judgment inquiries made.each year have-beerr used to develop series of quantities and values which,, it is believed, re¬ flect the annual variations in fertilizer application. It has not been possible to obtain, positive- checks as to whether or not the fertilizer use indicated by that

series is at the correct level.

V This report was prepared by Henry L, Rasor and Ella Sue Minor of the staff of the Crop'Reporting 3oard, The basic data were gathered by the Agricultural Statistician.' in charge of the field offices’ in the States* The estimates are a joint product

of the field- and Washington staff.

Page 8: Farm production, farm disposition, and value of cotton and

Percentage monthly sales of lint cotton are computed from data reported by farmers near the close of the season, with consideration being given to redemptions of cotton loans held by the Commodity Credit Corporation. The farmers are asked to report the number of bales of cotton sold each month excluding that placed in Government loans. Percentages computed from these actual sales, by States, are the monthly marketings for crop years in which there were no Government; loans or in • . i which the amount of cotton placed under loan was relatively small* Loan cotton redeemed during the crop year is credited to sales within the month in which the redemptions were made, it being assumed that such cotton was sold immediately upon redemption. Sales of redeemed cotton are combined with sales through regular channels in computing monthly marketing percentages for years in which there were Government loans. For the crops of 1933, 1941 and 1942 the difference between 100 percent and the total season sales represents cotton unredeemed during the marketing season. Loan cotton from the crops of 1934, 1937, 1938 and 1940 which was not redeemed prior to the end of the crop year is credited to sales in the month in which the loans were made*

For purposes of determining total value of cotton production the value of cotton still unredeemed at the end of the marketing season has been computed at average loan price or season average price, whichever is greater. Value of loan cotton from the 1933 crop, redeemed prior to -august 1, 1935, was computed at the price fhrmsrs received during the month in which it was redeemed.
