Engine enthusiast Rudy Adrian had been keen on get-ting a Czechoslovakian-made Lorenz engine for years. Why? For starters, his wife, Xenia, is of Czechoslovakian heritage; her grandfather emigrated from Czechoslovakia and settled in Ohio. Plus, he just liked how they looked. “Years ago at the Baraboo, Wisconsin, show, a fel-low had a Lorenz engine,” Rudy says. “I liked the way it looked. It still had the factory cart on it, and the wheels were neat-looking. It was very European in appear-ance.” But finding one in the U.S. took a bit.
Finding a LorenzFor many years, simply want-
ing a Lorenz was as far as Rudy’s aspirations went. But then one
day he was talking to a cus-tomer at his magneto and igniter
repair shop, Adrian’s Magneto Service ([email protected]). “We were just chatting on the phone about engines, and he asked if I had bought any-thing lately. I said, ‘No, I’m kind out of room, but I would like to buy a Lorenz engine, so if you ever come upon a small Lorenz that’s for sale, let me know.’” Rudy didn’t expect the immedi-ate response he got. “I have too many engines, too, and I have a small Lorenz I would let go,” the caller said. Naturally, Rudy jumped at the chance to buy the engine.
Not much is known about this particular 3-4hp Lorenz engine or how it made its way to the U.S. from Czechoslovakia, where it was manufactured by the Ignac-Lorenz company in 1918. Founded in Kromeriz, Moravia, in 1882, Lorenz established a factory for the repair and manufacture

People express themselves in a wide variety of ways. Some paint pictures, some compose music, others build houses, while yet others craft fine jewelry. A few, like Gary Richardson, retrofit old engines, converting them into hit-or-miss engines.
The speed of many small, 4-cycle engines is governed by the throttle opening. Weights are mounted within the flywheel, and as the flywheel rotates, centrifugal
force moves the weights outwards, in turn working the butterfly valve in the carburetor to maintain the desired speed of the engine. In earlier hit-and-miss engines, an external flyball governor connects to the exhaust valve via linkage. When the speed of the engine is below a given level, the exhaust valve operates as normal, staying closed on the intake stroke as the piston draws down, creating a vacuum that opens the intake
valve for the admission of the fuel/air mixture, which is then ignited (the “hit”) to produce a power stroke. When the speed exceeds the desired level, the governor holds the exhaust valve open. With no vacuum in the cylinder, the intake valve stays closed and there is no admission of fuel/air (the “miss”). As a result, hit-or-miss engines have a distinctive sound when running – “bang, whoosh, whoosh, whoosh,

Gary Hansen’s gas engine collection started with his grand-mother’s old washing machine. “It was a Maytag 92 with a side exhaust, the kind of machine with an open gear wringer at the top,
that she bought back in the late 1930s. I restored that, and kind of worked my way up from there to buying gas engines here and there at auctions and swap meets,” Gary says. “My dad used to take
us to shows around the area, like Le Sueur (Minnesota, Pioneer Power Show) and Butterfield (Minnesota, Threshing Bee) and I always thought that was neat. I ended up with a few tractors, too.”
Also turning Gary toward old iron was a Cockshutt burr mill his grandfather bought, but never belted up. “He bought it new at Gambles for $15, with the intent of grinding feed for the chickens. But it stayed in the barn, and as a kid we had no idea what it was used for until my father explained it. So I kept it around, and when I got into the hobby I started dis-playing it,” Gary says.
Gary’s first gas engine was a 1-1/2hp IHC M that he bought at an estate auction. “It was the first one I happened to see in the paper, so I went to the sale and ended up getting it. I ran it for a few years and then started looking for something different.

A couple months ago, I made my first engine trade – a Galloway Handy Andy for a Northwestern Dan Patch. Do you want to know how a Peter Wright anvil set me off on an engine quest? When you have a love for engines and history, and dreams of building a blacksmith shop!
This spring, Gas Engine Magazine ran a small ad for me to find a Dan Patch engine. That ad led to a call from Howard, an engine collector, in Duluth, Minnesota. Howard said he had some Patch engines, but

Frisco Standard station-ary gas engines are a rare sight. Manufactured by the Standard Gas Engine Co., San Francisco, California, Standard engines – particularly their marine engines – were popular on the West Coast, but it seems that very few made it over the Sierra Nevada mountains to the central or eastern parts of the U.S.
The company was established around 1900 as the Standard Machine Works, and in 1901 built its first engine, a single-cylinder marine engine similar to the engine featured here.
Rapid growth led to reorga-nization and a reincorporation as Standard Gas Engine Co., in 1902. Initial offerings were single-cylinder marine engines available in 3hp to 9hp sizes. Designed by former Union Gas Engine Co. machinist Peter Morhdieck, the vertical sideshaft engines featured mechanically actuated intake and exhaust valves, and incorporated Morhdieck’s unique throttle gov-ernor design. Morhdieck’s engine and governor designs were not patented until 1906, although the applications for patent were made in 1903.
By 1902, Standard had introduced a 2-cylinder version, with 3- and 4-cylinder versions following. By 1905, apparently prompted by labor union issues in San Francisco, the company was making plans to expand and move across the bay to Oakland, which it finally did in 1906 following

Manufactured for Sears & Roebuck and Co., it’s spark plug-ignited with a Wico magneto. It has a throttling governor, is hop-per-cooled and shows a serial number of 8638.
Fortunately, the engine didn’t need much work. “It had been painted, but other than that it was pretty much the way it had come from the factory. The pre-vious owner had the book and everything on it.” They were just the third owner of the 6hp.
The engine provided some big excitement at the Donnelly show a few years ago. “The screws came loose on the throttle plate, and the engine jumped off the ground. We were right there and shut it down immediately, so nothing got wrecked. I suppose it would have crashed if we had

Social media is an interactive network where consumers are collaborators — they shape the conversation and influence their communities. By using content to inspire conversation, our convergent media packages build an immediate network around your products. Whether on Facebook or streaming on YouTube, real-time discussion about your brand creates instant connections — and those connections lead to attitudes and behaviors that generate awareness and sales. Tell your story to the discerning influencers who will “like” and “share” your message with like-minded consumers.
SOCIAL MEDIA EXPOSURE Sponsor videos, contests and other content on the most popular social media sites and apps.
INTERACTIVE POSTS Maximize engagement with sponsored content via live video streaming, product demonstrations and special guest collaborations.

In fact, you can meet them face to face at the annual Midwest Old Threshers Reunion in Mount Pleasant, Iowa.
The Reunion is arguably the largest and certainly one of the longest vintage farm equipment shows in the country, and we have been a proud supporter for years. Each year over Labor Day weekend, thousands of vintage tractors, gas engines, steam engines, implements, oil pulls, classic cars, horse-drawn threshers and more descend on this quaint Midwestern town for the memory of a lifetime. Get your name and services in front of thousands of enthusiasts. Connect directly with the country’s most passionate and influential consumers, and find out what they are looking for!
