The Good News 2

The Pastor’s Pen

Is This Really “It”? Since this is June, this likely will be the last ar-ticle I write for the St. Luke “Good News” newsletter. (Some may consider that truly to be good news!)

It is hard to believe that June and the date for our departure is so near. In some ways it seems that Heidi and I have been in San Ange-lo for a long time. We have been warmly re-ceived and made to feel so welcome. We have met so many wonderful people and have had so many great experiences. We even have gotten to the point that we know our way around town! We truly have come to feel “at home” here.

Yet, in other ways it seems such a short time that we have been San Angelonians, San An-gelites, … er … residents of San Angelo. It seems that there still are so many more things for us to do here. There still are folks whom I don’t know nearly as well as I would like. And it seems that we still have so much more about the Lord to learn and experience together.

But whether the time has been long or short, it has been good. Heidi and I have been blessed … abundantly. We have had a wonderful par-sonage in which to live and we have been blessed financially, but that has not been our primary means of blessing. Our greatest bless-ings from being in San Angelo have come from you. (Or, actually, they have come from the Lord through you!) We have been blessed to have been a part of your lives and to have had you as a part of our lives.

Yet isn’t that the way the Lord works? The greatest treasures we receive – the greatest treasures we can carry with us – are not those we carry in our pockets or purses, but those we carry in our hearts. So, even as we prepare to take our leave to face new challenges, we will continue to be blessed through you. Be-

cause we will carry a part of you with us. We may not be able to take you with us physically, but you still will be with us in our hearts.

Being a part of this church family, knowing you, loving you, sharing a part of our life jour-neys together has had a significant influence upon who we are. And it will continue to do so from this day forward. Yet, your influence not only will affect us, but also those with whom and to whom we will be in ministry in Tennes-see. That may sound a bit of a “stretch” but I really do think it’s true. That’s a part of the connection we have as members of the Body of Christ. What we do with, for, and to each oth-er influences far more folks than just those of us who are immediately involved. It also influ-ences how we respond to others (and how oth-ers respond to us) in future situations.

So, Heidi and I thank you for being a part of our lives. We thank you for loving and invest-ing yourself in us as you did in the ministry of Christ’s Church. We do take you with us, and we do so gladly. Until we meet again and have the opportunity to share how the Lord has been working in our lives … In Christ,

Behold, I am about to do something new; even now it is coming. Do you not see it?

Greetings all. It’s May and I’m always amazed at

just how busy our kids can be at this time of year.

It used to be just the seniors but now it’s all of

them. 2 grades were still taking standardized tests

this last week of the month. Tryouts for athletic

teams, end of the year choir concerts, end of year

orchestra and band concerts and if that wasn’t

enough the football teams have their spring

games. Amid all this activity are their finals which

are still being taken. But somehow amidst all this

academic and extracurricular activity our wonderful

kids still find time to make it to church and youth.

Last week we had a better than average showing

at church and all but one kid made it to youth

where we had our own end of year wrap up. Paul

Schroeder smoked some pork butts, different par-

ents made potato salad and Cathy Pitcock made

brownies, apple pie and brought some watermelon

for desert. We had a wonderful evening looking

back at the year and at the year to come.

Sunday was also Graduation Sunday where we

honored our two graduates Jill Taylor and Lauryn

Pitcock. If you missed this, Jill’s plans are to go to

ASU and while she is officially undeclared in the

major department she expressed a great interest

in Physics. We unfortunately have not seen a lot of

Jill in the last couple of years as her job has pre-

cluded her ability to attend Youth. Always smiling

Jill is one of those people that you see on the

street and she just makes you want to smile. She

has a giggle that is infectious and one of the

sweetest and most empathetic hearts that I have

come across. We wish her all the success the

world has to offer and as I said Sunday morning

that we want her to know that God’s people will be

with her wherever she goes and that St. Luke will

always be her home church.

Our second graduate is Lauryn Pitcock. As most of

you know Lauryn sings with us in the band at the

early service and has been a rock not only in that

regard but also in her presence in Youth on Sun-

day nights. Being the only senior attending most

nights she has been loyal and has continued to

come even though she has no peers from her

grade. I am so grateful for her presence as surly

as she could be at times. She ran errands, mainly

picking up the pizzas for me and would help us

with anything we asked. I know she knew she did-

n’t have to be there but her sense of loyalty and

camaraderie are so greatly appreciated by Carol

and myself not to mention the example she

showed to the rest of the group. Lauryn plans to

attend ASU and is undeclared as of yet. The best

news is that she plans to continue singing with us

as she goes to school across the street. She would

be hard to replace. I’ve told her that I look forward

to just being her friend and not just her Youth Di-

rector.

Summer approaches and as most youth groups

slow down in the summer, summer is where we

ramp up our program with mission opportunities

that we like to support in place of school time the

rest of the year. We will be delivering Meals For

The Elderly, serving meals at the Soup Kitchen, we

will work at Rust Street and help with our own

VBS. Not to mention our Local Mission Camp. Sum-

mer is our opportunity to do the work that Jesus

has called us all to do. Thanks to St. Luke for all

the support you give us. We know we could not do

this without you.

God Bless,

John

St. Luke has another successful Relay for Life

Tom Green county’s Relay for Life was held on Friday, May 10, 2019.

St. Luke United Methodist team raised $3,552.72. Thank you to everyone who helped with this endeavor.

Rather than one disease, cancer is a term used to describe more than 200 different diseases. Cancer happens when normal cells grow abnormally and form a tumor, or in the case of cancers of the blood—where an unusual number of white blood cells form. An untreated tumor can impact how the body func-

tions and lead to death.
