Autumn of 2020 is Here – Already?
October, my favorite month, is here. The crisp air
and the color of the trees cannot be beat in this
area of the country, and only New Hampshire can be
considered better. During a normal year we would be
enjoying breakfast together, getting ready to go to
Ocean City for “Corvettes on the Boardwalk,” and of
course, getting ready for the witches and goblins at
the end of the month. Maybe we can do a Skyline
Drive cruise?
If you missed the picnic at Widewater State Park on
September 13th, which many of you did, you missed
some great food and a chance to win a new C8 mid-
engine Corvette. See the picnic pictures and you will
see who won it. Skip and Mickey did a great job
cooking the hamburgers and hot dogs. The potluck
food was awesome! We all took a chance and re-
moved our masks for a group picture, also in the pic-
ture collage on p. 12.
The board election is coming up and I have a plan for
every member to participate. Keep an eye on your
emails and respond when asked.
Until next month, “Mask Up, Sanitize, Distance,
and Stay Safe!”

AQUIA CREEK CORVETTE CLUB
The purpose of this organization shall be to provide educational needs for those with Corvettes, and
for the preservation, restoration, and enjoyment of all Corvettes.
NOW IN OUR 34th YEAR
Aquia Creek Corvette Club (ACCC) was formed in September 1987 by a group of die-hard Corvette
enthusiasts from Aquia Harbor in Stafford, VA. The name was selected reflecting the Club's geo-
graphic and historical origins in the Old Dominion. Through hard work and commitment, ACCC has en-
joyed constant growth and now boasts 54 members representing nearly 70 Corvettes, from a 1953 to
2018. ACCC membership consists primarily of Stafford County residents, but has members from
Prince William, Fairfax, Fauquier, Spotsylvania, Orange, Culpeper, Loudon, Louisa counties, and two in
Florida. Since September 8th, 2014, the ACCC Facebook Group has been limited to ACCC members
only, except for a few that were already group members.

Fall is such a favorite time of year. Cooler nights,
still warm but less humid days, and the trees chang-
ing into beautiful colors. We celebrate some special
holidays although I’m sure they will be toned down
for 2020. Hopefully our members will still enjoy the
season.
On September 13, ACCC had our annual picnic at
Widewater State Park. Thanks to Skip and Marie
Sizemore for organizing the picnic. We were few in
numbers this year but it was a winning combination
of perfect weather, good food, and friends.
We had our monthly meeting at the picnic. Thanks
to Al McCloud for surprising some of us with Cer-
tificates of Appreciation for our many years of
membership in ACCC. We also discussed the possi-
bility of a Fall Skyline Drive cruise with an outside
picnic lunch along the way. Maybe we can firm up a
plan at our October 20 meeting.
Also in September some members attended one or
both Woodbridge Cars & Coffee. Steve Argubright
and I were there on the 19th. There was a wide as-
sortment of 89 cars and trucks attending. The next
two Cars & Coffee will be on October 3 and 17 from
8:00 to 10:00 am.
Gene Kneibert, Angie McGee, and John Amabile also
attended an all-day Cars and Coffee at Lake Anna in
September.
Check out photos of the picnic and other Corvette
events in this newsletter.
There are more car shows and outside events lately
but check online before going, to be sure they have
not canceled. See upcoming details in the Events
Calendar to the right. Please remember that all
events are subject to COVID-19 restrictions.
I hope to see some of you in October.

I’m looking forward to the day when there is some good news to write about but right
now that day seems far away. This morning the sky is gray with the smoke from fires
2,500 miles away and the news reports that over 202,000 Americans have died from
the Covid-19 virus, a number that’s hard to grasp. All we can do is follow the experts’
recommendations: wear a mask, keep your distance, and wash your hands. Speaking of
masks, the Museum is selling red or blue Kentucky masks for $8.95. Googling will get
you to a wide variety of Corvette-themed masks from sites such as etsy.com or redbub-
ble.com. It looks like we’ll be wearing masks for at least another year, so why not add a
few ‘Vette logo masks to your growing collection?
The Museum is finding ways to keep busy – in September there was a Jiu Jitsu Champi-
onship and a Gatlin Brothers concert. October 12, 19, & 26 are the dates for the One
Lap of Kentucky tours, and the Racing Weekend at Hershey is on Oct. 23. Looking
ahead, the 9-Day Caribbean Cruise will be on May 14-23, 2021.
The 2020 statistics are out; production was 83% coupes, 17% convertibles. Torch Red
was the most popular color at 25%, followed by Arctic White at 15%, and Black at 12%.
Black was the most popular interior at 28%.

My First Corvette
By Don Radeke
(The 5th in a series of articles by ACCC members)
I purchased my first corvette in January 1971 in Indianapolis while going to school at Fort Benjamin
Harrison. It was a 1968 forest green convertible, black interior, with white top, 4spd, and 327/350HP.
It had around 25kmiles. That previous summer I graduated from Officer Candidate School at Ft. Bel-
voir. Near graduation, I almost purchased a red 1966 Corvette Cpe but went conservative and pur-
chased a new VW Beetle for about $2200. In January I decided, what the heck, I am on my way to
the Presidio of SF, why not go in a corvette. I found the 68 with a guy who just happened to want a
VW Beetle because he was getting married. I gave him $900.00 and my VW and suddenly I was in my
first Corvette.
As a Lieutenant in the Army, I had very few dollars and I did have to borrow $500 for the Corvette. I
began doing my own maintenance. I learned to change the oil and change the plugs/points/condenser,
and all that stuff at the Auto Craft Shop. I learned to use a “timing light” and adjust the distributer.
I had the car all ready for the trip west. Of course I had to go home to South Dakota on my way and it
was snowing like crazy. I did spin out a few times and filling the fender wells with snow pack was very
easy. In Wyoming, I was pulled over by a state trooper. No one else was on the road and he was curi-
ous what the heck I was doing out there. I showed my military ID and I told him where I was heading
and that was it. No ticket!! I was not aware that at that time there was no speed limit in Wyoming. He
took off and about 10 miles down the road he was pulled over and waving me on……..I figured he wanted
me to open it up, so I did and passed him doing about 90mph and he just waved. Outside of Reno, a 911
Porsche was on my tail. Those “S” curves were new to me and I was comfortable at about 70 but not
much more. Finally, he went around and flipped me a friendly wave. I let him get about 3 or so miles
ahead and I could still see him on those curves. I said I’ll show him some real power so I pushed it and
caught him, rode his tail for awhile, and then I said enough excitement and went back to my slower and
safer speed. It was memorable and I proved the point I wanted to make.
I lived in Mill Valley north of SF and commuted daily in the corvette across the Golden Gate. It was a
fun time because weekends were exploring the city, Sausalito, in the Napa Valley, skin diving for Aba-
lone along the coast, or skiing at Lake Tahoe. My boss had a cabin at Tahoe. I put a lot of miles on the
corvette and it was time for a tune-up. In those days of leaded gasoline, a tune-up was needed about
every 8000 miles or so. One of the assistant directors at the auto shop was assisting me. He was ad-
justing the fuel/air mix on the carburetor when all of a sudden he yelled “Shut it down!” He dropped
the wing nut from the air cleaner and after we did not find it, he concluded that it must have gone
down the carb. The nightmare was beginning. First the carb, then the intake manifold, all the accesso-
ries, and finally the heads were all removed. This took several days. We never did find the wing nut.
Once the heads were off I was talked into a valve job and so it went for another three or more weeks
without my car. I had no leave time so I could only work on the car during evenings and weekends. It
was a challenge to get it to run again. My first engine assembly and I had some left over parts??? I
wanted to cry. Eventually I had it running pretty good but I did not have the money to take it where it
should have gone …. To a professional! (continued on next page)

My First Corvette (cont’d)
By Don Radeke
Months later and perhaps another six thousand miles, I decided I had too much money in the car and
thought I should invest my money in something. I bought 10 acres of desert sand near Barstow, CA,
and decided to sell the car. I would be rich someday (Maybe and another story). I sold the corvette
for about $2400. I was expecting orders to VN at any moment. It was a strange time. I still needed
a car so I found a 1930 Model A Ford with 265V8, 3spd, 4 inch drop axel and 57 Chevy rear end for
only $800. It ran but not very good. That started another project for numerous weeks in the auto
craft shop but that is another story, which includes a hit movie in 1972. Sharon and I got married and
soon after I was on my way to Korea. The second corvette would come 26 years later.

What Did You Do to Your Corvette??
(The 2nd in a series of articles by ACCC members)
McCloud 2019 — No performance additions to my 2019 Grand Sport, just decoration additions: the American Flag decal in the C7 emblems; the Grand Sport fender stripes; the red knobs and the silver trim around the left and center vent on the dash; and the red and silver engine treatment, the alternator cover most recent.
Radeke 2016 coupe — I washed and waxed last week. Also checked the tire pressures and
added air as temperatures are getting cooler. Best of all, I drove the car and enjoyed every
moment.............no sense in letting it sit in a garage!!!!!
Rutledge 1957 — I took my radiator to Arlington Armature to get it fixed; it got transferred
to MD and then to Phila. After some delay I got an estimate of $1095 to re-core it. I said
“Nooo thanks,” and ordered a new reproduction aluminum radiator from DeWitt’s. Currently
awaiting delivery.
Rutledge 1991 coupe — I charged the battery. It needed it.. Yours might, too.

ACCC Friends,
Lourdes and I wanted to say thank you for all the years of friendship while we were members of the ACCC and sadly
we also wanted to say goodbye.
A few months ago, Lourdes and I had been discussing our move to Florida, scheduled for when our daughter Gianna
graduated college in three years... A few months ago we were about to take advantage of the low interest rates and
were about to refinance our home. Instead we decided to test the hot housing market and we ended up selling our
home in only 1 day! Once that happened, we fled to Florida, found a home, and are now leaving Virginia headed to the
sunshine state in just a couple of weeks. Over the years we have enjoyed our time with the club and most impor-
tantly many of you that we have become friends with. Both of us were always excited when we knew we were able to
attend an event, not only because of the amazing Corvettes, but we always looked forward to seeing the club mem-
bers, sharing stories and laughs, catching up with friends, and getting to know each and every one of you.
We are moving to Estero, Florida and will truly miss our friends in the ACCC.
Your friend forever,
John Amabile, 540-220-2988

CANCELLED: Ocean City Corvette Weekend 2020
(Was to be on October 16-17, 2020, in Ocean City, MD)
After much thought and consideration, the Free State Cor-
vette Club Board of Directors has elected to cancel Cor-
vette Weekend 2020. The decision to act in a prudent
manner for the sake of public safety to ensure the health
and well being of our membership as well as the attendees
did not come lightly. There are just too many unknown vari-
ables for our club to proceed with this year's event.
During these unprecedented times, we optimistically antici-
pate that this pandemic may only compel us to cancel this
event for the 2020 calendar year. We are looking forward
to holding Corvette Weekend next year if it is safe to do
so, and hope to begin the planning process in early 2021!
From every member of the Free State Corvette Club, we
wish you all great health and happiness. Take care of your-
selves and each other, and thank you for your support of
our event.

President/Vice President: Democrat, 1993-2001, Bill Clinton/Al Gore
News Events:
11 members of the Branch Davidian religious cult are found not guilty of charges related to a deadly shootout with fed-
eral agents.
O.J. Simpson is charged with the murders of his former wife, Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ron Goldman.
The exterior design remained unchanged
from 1993, but two new colors were added --
Copper Metallic and Admiral Blue.
The LT1's power output remained at 300 hp
but multi-port fuel injection was replaced by
a new sequential fuel injection system that
improved response, drivability, idle, and
emissions. Injectors were fired in sequence
with the engine's firing order, and a more
powerful ignition quickened engine start-up,
especially in cold weather. Electronic con-
trols in a redesigned standard four-speed automatic transmission improved shift quality and a safety interlock was
incorporated that required the driver to depress the brake pedal when shifting from the "park" mode.
Inside, the instrument panel became one piece; a passenger-side air bag was added; the two-spoke steering wheel with
driver's air bag was redesigned; seat and door trim panels were revised; a faster power window was added to the
driver's door; white instrument panel graphics transformed into a tangerine hue at night; all seats, whether standard
or sport, were leather; seats were redesigned to accommodate a wider range of passenger and driver sizes, and indi-
vidual power seat adjustment controls were relocated to the console.
Convertible rear windows were changed from plastic to glass with defrosters/defoggers built into the glass panel. Air
conditioning systems were revised from CFC-based to non-polluting refrigerants. The selective ride and handling qual-
ity of the electronic suspension option was improved by lowering spring rates, and recommended tire pressures were
reduced.
Goodyear Extended Mobility Tires (run-flat), which allowed continued use under zero tire pressure conditions to
stretch safe driving range, were optional on some models and worked in conjunction with the low tire pressure warning
system.
Annual production again moved slightly upward with 17,984 coupes and 5,346 convertibles built. But, ZR-1 production
remained at 448 for the second year.
The basic coupe now cost $36,185; the convertible $42,960 and the ZR-1 option dropped $425 to $31,258.
Popularity of the ZR-1 was on a decline. Several factors may have contributed to the waning appeal of the "King of the
Hill." Price was one --the ZR-1 option virtually doubled the price of the basic Corvette. Moreover, the unique styling of
the 1990's rear exterior lost some of its exclusivity when extended to all 1991 models and beyond. In addition, the
introduction of the improved, small block LT1 engine gave Corvette enthusiasts the muscle they sought, but in the
lower-cost basic models.
Additionally, the fiberglass sports car's acceptance by the American motoring public was firmly manifest with the
opening of the National Corvette Museum in Bowling Green on September 2, 1994.
