FAREWELL MRS COLLIS This week we farewell Mrs Wendy Collis who has been our School Administration Manager for the past 24 years. Mrs Collis has been on extended leave for the past 12 months to be with her family. Last week she formally retired from the NSW Department of Education after 33 years of service in the school system. Mrs Collis started her career with the Department in 1987 working at Kalinda School as a teachers aide, a time that was very special to her heart. She was one of many driving forces, successfully moving Kalinda School into town, to provide their students with an inclusive learning environment. From there in 1997, Mrs Collis came to Hanwood as our School Administration Manager. She was always renowned for having a handy tool kit and fixing whatever appliance, key lock or equipment that was not working. She also reupholstered many teacherschairs in bright colourful material as the seats wore thin. Mrs Collis loved the social aspect of working in the school setting and always loved a chat and enjoyed helping staff, families and students alike. Her connection and commitment to Hanwood Public School started many years prior to her employment with all five of her children attending Hanwood Public. She was incredibly proud when her grandchildren enrolled at the school. Wendy has always been a strong advocate for Hanwood Public School. She has welcomed numerous principals and countless teachers and support staff to the school. Wendy has built strong relationships with the children, their families and the wider school community. She especially enjoyed welcoming past students returning to the school for their own childrens education. Her length of service and contribution to the Department of Education is an achievement that needs to be acknowledged. Mrs Collis will be presented with her service medal when it arrives in the near future. Congratulations on a wonderful career, and best wishes for the next phase. On behalf of the staff, students and families of Hanwood Public School we wish Mrs Collis every happiness in her retirement. Monica St Baker Principal

KB - MISS SIGNOR

What a busy few weeks we have had in KB so far! We have been learning all about adjectives, nouns and verbs in literacy. Many of the KB students are now experts at classifying different words into whether they are adjectives, nouns or verbs. KB have been working very hard at learning their new sight words every week and now know 15 new words!! In Maths this week we are focusing on multiplication and division. They are also enjoying learning about transport in Science and special places in Geography. This term KB have started doing weekly news. They have a different topic every week which they write about and they get to present their writing on their designated day. News is helping the students of KB to develop their speaking and listening skills. I love listening to KB share their news with myself and their peers.

ITALIAN NEWS

Welcome back to Term 4! I don’t know where the year has gone!!! 1/2C has started Italian lessons this term and are very keen to learn and use Italian in the classroom. I am very impressed with their reading of our big book and how keen they are to play our ‘Buongiorno’ game. We have been learning how to ask someone what their name is and how to answer. The students have all been able to use this in the classroom in discussions and copy simple sentences from the whiteboard. Next week we will be moving on to discussing how to ask how someone feels and the choices that can be made to answer. From there we will be focusing on counting to10 in Italian and using it to ask and answer about our age. Stage 2 classes have just started their new unit which is about a little red car touring Italy whilst participating in a race. The lessons will be focusing on the language of the story first but then we will be working on the cultural aspect of the unit. This will include a geography component, learning about the different places ‘Macchinetta Rossa’ (The Little Red Car) visits during the race and plotting them on a map of Italy. We will then continue on to researching those famous places including historical information about them. I look forward to working with each of the classes on this very interesting unit. Stage 3 is well underway to finishing off their school unit with an assessment on their writing of sentences about classroom objects. Once these are completed we will be reading some simple role plays using the learnt language to give the students some reading practice in an enjoyable context. I hope the students enjoy the role plays as a positive completion of the unit. Please see photos on next page. Mrs Violi

3/4S - MRS MCALLISTER

Our class has been very busy creating dioramas showcasing their knowledge of Australian animals and the environments that they live in, as well as collages using 2D shapes. The students have researched about the Royal Flying Doctor Service and have created posters, combining their findings with a sketch of one of the planes that these doctors use. This term, Stage 2 students have all combined to work in small groups during STEM sessions. Their two challenges so far have been to build a tower with the same dimensions for its width and height and to construct a self-supporting triangle from natural materials. The following photos are a sample of our hard work.
