Principal's Desk
“Congratulations to our swimmers
on winning the D&D Gala”
As I arrived back from the North Durban Principals’ Conference on Friday, I walked onto the top field where we
were playing a cricket match against Northlands and I heard one of the cricketers shout, “Well done Chelsea!
Keep going.” I think the comment epitomises the spirit of Chelsea where we continue to be positive and
encourage good sportsmanship. The fact that we won all our cricket matches against Northlands Primary and
Reddam House this week was a bonus.
Extra special congratulations go to our swimmers for winning the boys and girls sections at the Durban and
Districts ‘B’ League Gala yesterday. Swimming can be a hard and lonely sport but the dedication and
enthusiasm shown by Mr Widdows, Miss Fryer and Mr Barnard has inspired our team to reach new heights.
We are so proud of their achievements this season, where the girls have won all the major galas they have
participated in, and the boys have achieved first and second places. The cheering by our one hundred and forty-
two Chelsea pupils, who supported our team was absolutely incredible. Never before has a school had so many
supporters at a Durban and Districts Gala. Congratulations to our Chelsea supporters and helpers. Along with
the swimmers, they will all receive Silver Awards.
Special thanks to Mr Cariem and our staff for organising the D&D Gala. In addition to the usual gala organisation,
we put together special snack packs for the coaches, and held cheerleading practices for our supporters.
Equipment had to be transported to the Kings Park Pool – thank you to Mr Klingbeil and his team. It was a really
exciting afternoon. Thank you to our parents who have ensured their children have attended practices, and for
their support at the gala.
There is not a day I wake up and don’t feel privileged to be part of the Chelsea family and this fine institution.
As mentioned, Mrs Maritz and I attended the North Durban Principals’ Conference last week. It is these
inspirational conferences that enable us to be continually in touch with education. Author of the book “Tripping
over Presidents”, Matthew Willman, and a documentary photographer, filled us in on his experiences with
‘Madiba’, one of the most determined leaders of all times. Matthew too must have incredible determination
because after he had decided he wanted to meet Mr Mandela, it took him nine years. I have just begun reading
his book and am looking forward to his story. I will endeavour to arrange for Matthew Willman to do a
presentation on ‘Madiba’ later this year to our Grade 6 and 7 pupils.
Rob Caskie, a story teller, keynote speaker and cultural guide, reminded us about one of the past great leaders,
Ernest Shackleton who set out to travel across Antarctica, from the Weddell Sea via the South Pole to the Ross
Sea. The story is a fascinating one I’ve taught while in the classroom, and is an incredible story of grit and
leadership. It reminded me of how we sometimes overprotect our children these days, and whilst one would
hope that nobody would have to endure such hardships, it does teach about making decisions and leading from
the front.
Well done to all our learners who show determination and grit in their school work, cultural and sport activities.
Our grade five and seven pupils will soon be going away on their exciting overnight excursions, and I hope they
will all be big and brave about sleeping away from home. Thank you to our staff and parents for giving them this
opportunity.

Durban and Districts "B" League Championship Gala
What an awesome afternoon it has been for our swimmers and all
the spectators.
Our girls came first, with a total of 109 points, and our boys also
came first, with a total of 107 points, breaking a few records along
the way.
This made us the overall winners of the "B" League Gala which
moves us into the "A" League for 2019.
SPORTS NEWS
Dear Parents
The week ahead is a very important one, in terms of meeting our
swimming programme goals that we had set out two years ago.
With an enormous amount of dedication and commitment from our
swimmers and swimming coaches, we will hope to achieve those
goals on Tuesday. Added to this important gala is the fact that
Chelsea will be hosting the gala as well. It was therefore decided
that all extra - curricular activities, including sport, would be
suspended on Tuesday 6 March, resuming as normal on
Wednesday. Parents would have received notice on this.
The sports department would also like to thank those parents who
were kind enough to assist in transporting our swimmers, helpers
and supporters to the Kings Park swimming pool on Tuesday.
Our results over the past two weeks with regards to swimming,
cricket and netball have been an indication that the programmes
that we have in place, as far as developing our pupils’ skills, are
paying off. The results below will give parents a comprehensive

ENVIRONMENTAL TEAM
Leap day for Frogs
It is one day of the year when ordinary South Africans can take a
leap of action and do something to appreciate and protect one of
the most threatened group of animals on Earth: Frogs!
These important creatures are disappearing all over the planet,
largely because of habitat destruction.
Why February? Apart from having tongues 1/3 the length of their
bodies, frogs are also famous for leaping across long distances –
up to 20 times their own body length in a single leap!
The South African Cape River Frog holds the world record for Frog
Jumping – the longest distance covered in three consecutive
jumps – at 10.3 m? Not bad for a 5 cm frog! And if you think about
it, February leaps into March, skipping days 29, 30 and 31 except
on Leap years, which occur every four years, adding the 29th of
February to the calendar. People born on this day are called
“Leaplings”.
The Environment Team have been promoting awareness for
Frogs by doing various activities. They also taught the school a
song in assembly last week about the life cycle of frogs.
On Wednesday, Thursday and Friday the Environment Team sold
frog cupcakes to the children at break.
GRADE 7
Grade 7 Sandwich Drive
Grade 7 ended the Sandwich Drive week by making 187 trays of
sandwiches which will be donated to Crossroads.
Mr Mahendra Chetty from Cross Roads with Jada Brown, Aiden
Wild, Andisiwe Mdluli and Bareera Joosub who handed the
sandwiches to him for distribution to rural schools.
TRAINING
Swimming Training

GRADE 5
Natural Science
As part of celebrating Leap day for Frogs, Mrs Viljoen's pupils
went on a "Frog Scavenger Hunt".
They received a worksheet with frog related questions. They went
to the eco garden and had to find their answers.
GRADE 4
Frog Scavenger Hunt
As part of Frog Awareness week, each class was given a
worksheet to complete.
The grade 4s and grade 5s went down to the Eco Garden to have
a scavenger hunt looking for frog fact cards.
Here is the class of Mrs Crichton, busy with their frog scavenger
hunt.
MRS DU PREEZ
"My Family" Orals
Mrs du Preez's grade 4s had to give a short presentation
about themselves and three members of their families and
bring an item from home to represent each person.
It was wonderful to learn a little more about each child.
GRADE 6
Fractions
Miss Mudie's class learnt about fractions using chocolate bars
and working in groups.
And the best part . . . . . . they could eat the fractions afterwards.
NETBALL CLINIC
Hosted by Northlands Girls' High School
Northlands Girls' High School hosted some primary school
learners for a netball clinic a while ago.
Their learners shared some crucial secrets on aspects such as
reaction time, agility and hand-eye coordination with the
primary school girls - and they had great fun doing it!
What an exciting and productive morning it was. Thank you for
the initiative of NGHS hosting this event.
ENGLISH

FULL STOP
Empathy
When you plant lettuce, if it does not grow well, you don't blame
the lettuce.
You look for reasons it is not doing well. It may need fertiliser, or
more water, or less sun.
You never blame the lettuce.
Yet, if we have problems with friends or family, we blame the other
person. But if we know how to take care of them, they will grow
well, like the lettuce.
Blaming has no positive effect at all, nor does trying to persuade
using reason and argument. That is my experience. No blame, no
reasoning, no argument, just understanding.
If you understand, you can live, and the situation will change.
