Interact Club Cycle for Children in Need. Saturday 10th November.
The Wykeham House Interact
Club joined with Rotary
members to take part in a
sponsored cycle ride in aid of
the Children in Need Appeal.
Gary Willcocks was there to
assist me with organising the
send- off, as eight girls from
the club along with three
‘Dad’s’ arrived for the event.
They were joined by John
Landaw who had kindly
planned the route along the old
disused railway line. He
arrived with all necessary
tools, including inner tubes in
case of break down. Another
of our keen cyclists Mike
Eastwood assisted, very
professionally dressed in his
smart Fareham Wheelers
Lycra outfit, they were joined
by Richard and Pippa Coghlan
and their dog who added to the
enjoyment – and obstacles – as
the party made their way to the
half-way point at Soberton.
President Duncan had
organised his working party of
Lyndon, Mike Hurley and
David Spencer to climb some
rather difficult steps and erect
a gazebo which housed the
table complete with paper
cloth for the drinks and
biscuits. Of Course thanks
must go to Carol who had
organised everything. Duncan
had contributed by supplying
the ‘Medical Kit’ but soon
delegated Lyndon to attend
any casualties. Thankfully his
services were not required!
We heard the girls laughing
and giggling as they came
towards us at the drinks
station, they were all enjoying
themselves in spite of the
muddy conditions. Soon they
were peddling back towards
Wickham. They certainly
didn’t hang around as John and
I drove back to meet them they
were soon back with us, still
smiling and some even keen to
do it all again. I am sure that
some of the parents were
cursing us later in the day
when they had to hose down
the bikes and possibly remove
mud from the insides of their
cars, but after all it was in a
good cause.
Other girls, who didn’t cycle,
also played their part in raising
funds by selling home-baked
cakes from a stall set up at the
school.
“THE WHEELHOUSE”
At the District Council
meeting of November, The
Rotary Club of Fareham won a
prestigious award :
The Wessex Award for
Community Service.
Chris Thomas, Chairman of
the Wheelhouse Committee,
gave a presentation to District
Council, briefing them on the
founding, building,
maintenance and use of this
seaside facility.
Chris’ presentation follows:
The Rotary Club of Fareham was
chartered in 1946 and within
months the club took under its
wing a local orphanage called St
Edith’s. The Club decided to
provide a beach house for use by
the orphanage which was erected
by the members using their
various skills and was officially
opened in 1948. In later years it
became known as "The
Wheelhouse". The building was
used by various charitable
organisations over the years and
no charge was made for this use.
By the 1980’s, the Wheelhouse
was in a terrible state of repair,
mainly due to its age and its
location by the sea and this was
costing the club a considerable
amount of money. After high
tides the building flooded and had
to be cleared and cleaned of
things such as dead crabs etc.,
before it could be used again.
In 1991, Ben Benstead became
President of the Club and his
project for that year was to raise
funds to enable the Wheelhouse
to be demolished and rebuilt
which seemed to be the only
solution to the ongoing problem.
The old group D clubs were
offered use of the building if they
contributed to the rebuilding
costs but, sadly, all declined. Ben
then decided to give the club an
interest free loan and carry out the
work at cost with several other
members also giving interest free
loans. The Club decided to
proceed and shelved all other
projects until the loans were
repaid. This was achieved in less
than 3 years! The building was
"topped out" by Malcolm Harper,
then Mayor of Fareham and
member of the club, in 1991 and
later officially opened by him.
The new Wheelhouse measures
22 feet 5 inches (6.83m) by 24
foot 8 inches (7.52m) internally
containing a fully equipped
kitchen area with electric
cooker, sink unit, work tops,
water heating equipment,
crockery, cutlery, tables, chairs
etc. and a separate toilet area. For
the hard of hearing a loop system
was installed. Fareham Borough
Council provided the land at a
peppercorn rent and has fully
supported various alterations to
assist with disabled access to the
building. Hampshire County
Council, through our local
councillor, Tim Knight, kindly
gave a grant to provide the new
shutters mentioned below.
The Wheelhouse was made
available for hire, at very modest
cost, to local charitable groups
such as MS, Day Care Centres,
Church organisations, etc. and

achieved about 50 bookings per
year as well as being used for
some club activities. In about
2005, it was decided to start a
rolling refurbishment programme
and was internally decorated, new
tables bought and more pro-
actively marketed. Since that
time, new carpet/vinyl flooring
has been laid, water heater
renewed, and new shutters and
front door fitted externally. Club
banners, which had been strung
around the walls, were sewn onto
large wall hangings made by the
wife of one of our members,
Marion Thomas, and are renewed
on occasions. In early 2011 the
kitchen was totally renewed with
thanks to B&Q for generously
discounting the materials, and two
of the large windows were
replaced. The two front windows
were also replaced in late 2011.
At all times, provision has been
made for the disabled with ramps
and grab rails fitted particularly in
the toilet area.
During the last three years, the
building has been used on over
140 occasions by various groups
from all over Hampshire. One
Community from Eastleigh bring
their clients from their day
centres, as do many of the Age
Concern run day care centres as
far afield as Alresford and
Dibden, and latterly, Alton. The
Rotary Clubs of Petersfield,
Cosham, Waterlooville and
Locksheath bring the elderly and
infirm from their areas for a day at
the seaside. Our daughter club,
Fareham Meon, has used it for
gourmet evenings. Various
charities for the handicapped such
as Stroke Clubs, MS, Parkinson’s,
Alzheimer’s, and Motor Neurone
also visit with Trefoil Guilds,
Hearing Dogs for the Deaf, and
Save the Children also amongst
our users. Holyrood Church
together with the Fareham and
Gosport Methodist Circuit use it
for their Easter morning seaside
services. It has become so popular
that 50 bookings for 2011 were
made within a week of the
bookings list being opened and
for 2012, 63 days were booked in
the first 24 hours of opening the
bookings! The building is
available, still at modest cost
(currently £30 per day), to
charitable organisations and
Rotary Clubs for the charitable
organisations that they support
etc. Occasional bookings are
available to non-charitable
organisations at £75 per day. The
building can accommodate a
maximum of 42 people. The
Wheelhouse has become self-
supporting financially, its biggest
outlay being insurance. It is run
on behalf of the club by a small
group of Trustees with a
committee to oversee the daily
running.
……………….………………
This glowing testimonial was
sufficient to convince the judges
of a real success story – and
consequently make the award to
the Wheelhouse of which we are
all immensely proud.
The certificate is shown below:
Now read on!
A number of the charity
organisations, regular users of
the Wheelhouse, have
submitted Chris Thomas’
name for consideration in the
Queen’s Award for
Voluntary Service. This is in
recognition of the dedicated
service that Chris has provided
over many years, in his care
and maintenance of the
wheelhouse. Chris will be
interviewed by the deputy
Lord Lieutenant of Hampshire
on Tues 11th December.
Chris, as many will know,
accepts and processes all the
booking forms for each year,
now approaching 150!
Between times, he attends the
Wheelhouse daily, hovering
and cleaning ready for the next
days’ clients. He and Marion
keep the cupboards well
supplied with cleaning
materials, and Marion washes
and irons the tea towels and
hand towels, as well as sewing
the rotary banners displayed.
In the closed season, Chris will
be found carrying out essential
repairs and maintenance,
internal and external.
We wish him every success
with this competition, and
hope he is duly rewarded!
APOLOGY. In last month’s edition my
Conference Correspondent
incorrectly suggested that DG
Mary Pike was the first lady to
hold this office. Of course the
honour rightly belongs to PDG
Caroline Millman, who hosted
last year’s conference. Sorry
Caroline!
Corrections: In last month’s issue I
suggested that the induction of
John and Nigel was the first
‘double since 2006. PP George
Cantrill points out that he
inducted three new members in
one day- Pres. Duncan, Pres
Elect Pam and Norman
Chapman – quite a coup!!
Non- Violence.
Dr Arun Gandhi, grandson of
Mahatma Gandhi and founder
of the M.K.Gandhi Institute for
Non-violence, in his June 9th
lecture to the University of
Pueto Rico, shared the
following story as an example
of ‘non-violence in parenting’;
I was 16 years old and living
with my parents at the institute
my had grandfather founded
18 miles outside Durban,
South Africa, in the middle of
the sugar plantations. We were
deep in the country and had no
neighbours, so my two sisters
and I would always look
forward to going to town to
visit friends or go to the
movies.
One day, my father asked me
to drive him to town for an all-
day conference, and I jumped
at the chance. Since I was
going to town, my mother gave
me a list of groceries she
needed, and since I had all day
in town, my father asked me to
take care of several pending
chores, such as getting the car
serviced. When I dropped my
father off that morning he said,
‘I will meet you here at 5:00.
We will go home together’.
After hurriedly completing my
chores I went straight to the
nearest movie theatre. I got so
engrossed in a John Wayne
double feature that I forgot the
time. It was 5:30 before I
remembered. By the time I ran
to the garage and hurried to
where my father was waiting
for me it was almost 6:00.
He anxiously asked me ‘Why
were you late?’ I felt so
ashamed of telling him I was
watching a John Wayne
western movie that I said ‘The
car wasn’t ready, so I had to
wait’ not realizing that he had
already called the garage.
When he caught me in the lie,
he said ‘There’s something
wrong in the way that I
brought you up that didn’t give
you the confidence to tell me
the truth. In order to figure out
where I went wrong with you,
I’m going to walk home 18
miles and think about it.’
So dressed in his suit and his
best shoes, he began to walk in
the dark on mostly unpaved,
unlit roads. I couldn’t leave
him, so for five and a half
hours I drove behind him,
watching my father go through
this agony because of a stupid
lie I had uttered. I decided
there and then that I was never
going to lie again.
I often think about that episode
and wonder, if he had punished
me the way we punish our
children, whether I would have
learned a lesson at all. I don’t
think so. I would have suffered
the punishment and gone on
doing the same thing. But this
single, non-violent action was
so powerful that it is still as if
it had happened yesterday.
That is the power of non-
violence.
‘Forgiveness is giving up my right to hate you for hurting me’

Wheelhouse gets new fence.
In order to ensure the safety
and enjoyment of Wheelhouse
users, a new ‘thigh-high’ fence
has been erected around the
site. Whilst protecting our
older patrons from tripping on
the curb, or straying onto the
road, it will also discourage the
general public from making a
detour across the grass on their
way to the public loos!
We are most grateful for a
grant from County Councilor
Tim Knight, which almost
covered the total cost of
materials and installation of
the fence.

DON'T YOU JUST LOVE SENIORS...
A man was sitting on a lawn
sunning and reading, when he
was startled by a fairly late
model car crashing through a
hedge and coming to rest on
his lawn.
He helped the elderly driver
out
and sat her on a lawn chair.
"My goodness" he exclaimed,
"you are quite old to be
driving!"
"Yes" she replied," I am old
enough that I don't need a
license anymore.
The last time I went to my
doctor he examined me, and
asked if I had a driver's
license.
I told him yes and handed it to
him. He took scissors out of a
drawer, cut the license into
pieces and threw them in the
wastebasket." "You won't be
needing this anymore," he
said.
"So I thanked him and left."

A Friend of Fareham Rotary – Terry Downer.
President Duncan hands the
Certificate of Friendship to Terry.
At our 5th Thursday social
evening at the Masonic Hall in
Fareham, President Duncan
was delighted to welcome
Terry Downer as a ‘Friend of
Rotary’.
President Duncan had written
to Terry, inviting him to join
our family of Rotary Friends in
the letter printed below. Terry
was delighted to accept.
‘For some time now you have
been a supporter of our Rotary
Club, coming to our events and
helping at times where we
have needed additional people,
such as the skittles and the
Tattoo. We are pleased to have
you join us in this way, and
several of us have thought that
it is time to recognise your
support in a more formal way
by appointing you a ‘Friend of
the Rotary Club of Fareham’.
I am therefore writing
to you to ask if you would like
to accept this award . This
means that you are able to join
in with our various activities
and will receive a regular copy
of our Club Bulletin to keep
you in touch with what is going
on. Council would like to
invite you to strengthen your
links with the club as a
‘Friend of Rotary’ and I do
hope that you will be pleased
with this link, and we certainly
would like that, we have
appreciated your input.’
Yours sincerely,
Duncan Colin-Jones.
President of the Rotary
Club of Fareham 2012/2013.
FACEBOOK In common with many Rotary
Clubs, I have signed up to

‘Fareham Rotary’. I hope that
those of you who use or are
familiar with Facebook will
contribute to this site, and add
your own comments, pictures,
items of interest etc. This can
work in conjunction with the
Website and the Flyer to keep
everyone informed of what’s

A Christmas Tale
...When the Sunday School
class had finished singing,
"Silent Night", they were told
the story of the Nativity.
The children were asked to
make a drawing of the scene as
they thought it might look.
After a little while, the teacher
passed among them to see how
they were doing.She stopped at
one little boy who had nearly
finished. She complimented
him on his drawing of Joseph
and Mary and the baby in the
manger, but noticed a fat roly-
poly figure set to one side.
"Who is that?" she asked. "It's
Round John Virgin", the boy
replied.
