H S E S C o l l e g e O f f i c eFrequently Asked QuestionsWhen are my college applications due?Every college has their own deadline, but since they need your high school record, the HSES collegeoffice REQUIRES you to finish your applications byNovember 16th. This will ensure that the collegesreceive your application materials by the deadline and in the correct order. Your school recordcannot be sent until you complete the initial application.

How do I apply to college / What do I need to do?The Family Connection/Naviance Website(www.connection.naviance.com/hses) is NOT where youapply to college. Listing a college on that website alone is not sufficient; you must also go ONLINE tothe colleges website and complete their electronic application.

The CUNY application is online at www.cuny.edu/apply. For all other colleges, including mostSUNYs, try using the common application online at www.commonapp.org. If a college you areapplying to does not use these applications, visit the colleges website directly.

You are responsible for sending each college all materials required for the application. This typicallyincludes, but is not limited to the:

Application Application fee Essay(s) Supplements(s) Recommendation(s) SAT scores

CUNY does not require essays or recommendation letters. SAT scores need to be sent through theCollege Board directly. This can be done online at www.collegeboard.com. Follow all the directionsCAREFULLY and be sure to submit all the required materials.

After you have completed and submitted all of the information as required by the college (not allcolleges will require all materials)you MUST add the college to the colleges Im applying to sectionof the Family Connection/Naviance Website (www.connection.naviance.com/hses) by the deadlineposted above. See below: Myapplication is done, now what for more info.

I have information I need to send to the college that cant be sent online, what do I do? Any information (such as checks/money orders, hard copies of an essay, recommendation letters from someone outside of theschool, or any other supplemental information) that can not be sent over the internet should be mailed directlyto the college by YOU. The college office will only send information electronically. Information willonly be sent via postal mail if the college does not accept electronic documents, which is rare.

Do I need a credit card to pay for the applications / What if I dont have a credit card?Applications cost money, unless you are fee waiver eligible (see below). Many colleges allow you tosubmit your online application without providing payment information. If there is an option to mailin the payment, you should select that option and complete the online form. After you have submitted

the application online be sure to mail the payment directly to the college as soon as possible. Includeyour application number and/or social security number for tracking purposes. The payments sectionof the common application has several options, which vary depending on the college.

There are some online applications that force you to include payment information in order to submitit online. In this circumstance, find a family member who will let you use their card, or purchase apre-paid card (Duane Read, CVS, and Rite Aid all carry pre-paid credit cards in the gift-card section). If you are stillunable to use a credit card you will have to apply through the mail. If you absolutely must use thepaper application forms, they can usually be printed off the internet from the colleges website.

These applications are expensive; can I get the fee waived? There are a limited number of fee waivers available for students who qualify financially. In order to

obtain a fee waiver, the college office must have a copy of your income information (typically the 1040tax return or budget letter). The college office can issue up to four private or out-of-state-public college feewaivers. SUNY has a separate fee waiver that can be used for up to four SUNY Colleges. CUNY has anextremely limited number of fee waivers which will be distributed on a first come first serve basis.ALL Fee waivers will be sent after you: ) list the college(s) on the Family Connection Websiteand) complete the my fee waivers survey in the about me section of the website . Thats it!Financial documents MUST be on file and you must qualify in order to receive a fee waiver. Moreinformation is provided on your Family Connection/Naviance Account once proof of income issubmitted, which must be done before Nov. 16th. Be aware that many colleges will waive the feedirectly if you apply online or by a certain date, and others do not honor waivers at all.

My application is done, now what / What does college office really do?Regardless of how or where you apply, you MUST add the colleges to thecolleges Im applying to section of the Family Connection/Naviance Website:

Once you have added the colleges to the colleges Im applying to list, HSES will send more required

documentation, which will vary by college, but typically includes:Counselor Section(often referred to as School Reportor Counselor Recommendation Form)School Profile Transcript Teacher Recommendation(s)(only if complete)

You do not need to submit forms to the HSES college office. Mail any additional materials directly tothe college if they cant be sent electronically. Remember, you also need to send your SAT scores onwww.collegeboard.com, follow up on your recommendations, and/or send supplements as required.

What is the deal with Teacher Recommendations?Your HSES teachers will be invited to upload their recommendations to our website. Before yourequest a recommendation (colleges Im applying to section) on the Family Connection/Naviance

Website, speak with the teacher. Some teachers will ask you to give them a Recommendation RequestForm, which is in the college office. After a recommendation has been uploaded, it will be includedwith the materials we send If the college requires a recommendation letter. If you have a letterfrom a person outside HSES, you may bring it into the college office BEFORE Nov. 16th to be uploaded.

The College Board is charging me to send my SAT scores to a college, whats the deal? You MUST send your SAT scores to the colleges directly fromwww.collegeboard.com, and yes, theycharge a fee. HSES has no way of sending these scores. When you register for the exam you are ableto list 4 colleges to send your scores to for free. After you take the exam, you no longer have thisoption and you must pay the fee. Students receiving a fee waiver can send scores to 4 additionalcolleges for free and you can add them even after the exam is over. Save yourself some cash andsend your scores to the CUNY central officethe collegeboard code for the central office at CUNY is2950. You do not need to list each CUNY college separately.I will not have my SAT Score before the November 16

    thDeadline, What do I do?

The college will continue to accept materials from you until their deadline. The November 16 thdeadline allows HSES enough time to send your high school records before that date (which variesfor each college). Your online application can be submitted without an SAT score. You will send yourSAT scores on collegeboard.com separatelyjust make sure it gets sent before the colleges deadline. If you need more time you MUST check with the college to determine if they will accept it after thedeadline. You should still submit the application.

What is a supplemental application; do I need to complete one; when should it be finished by?

Colleges often require additional information in order to evaluate your application. Supplementshave additional questions specific to a particular college. The common application tells you whichcolleges have supplements and if they have one. Your application is not complete until ALLcomponents have been submitted. Supplemental applications need to be sent before, after, or at thesame time as the initial application, depending on the college. Be sure to read and follow thedirections carefully. When in doubt, check your application status with the college.

Do I really need to submit my application and finish my essay before the November 16th Deadline?Sending materials in the following order will minimize problems: ) your initial application (whichmay include a preliminary essay); ) the high school record (transcript, school profile, school forms, counselor recommendations, etc.); ) recommendations (which are sent with the high school record

if they have been uploaded to the website); ) SAT scores (sent from collegeboard.com); and ) anysupplemental applications or additional materials (which sometimes include additional essayquestions).

Does the college office have a disclaimer?Yes. The HSES college office is not responsible for materials sent by the student and/or in disregard ofour guidelines. Failure to adhere these guidelines will delay processing and may jeopardize youradmission status. It is critical that you complete your applications before adding it to the FamilyConnection/Naviance Website. If the college receives your high school records before the application

the information could easily be discarded, misplaced, or lost. In the case of electronic applications,we may not be able to submit your materials at all if these guidelines are not followed precisely.

Follow up with each college;be sure that they have received all required information.
