LEN SHINDLER

1933 – 2011

It is with sadness that the Club reports the death of long time supporter and former player Len Shin-dler. Len played for the Club directly after the war at Fairfield Rec. and as a committee member in the late 60’s worked tirelessly with others to relo-cate the Club to it’s new ground at Leylands Park.

During that period he acted as a committee mem-ber and a team manager. In recent years he worked closely on the 400 Club.

Our thoughts are with Len’s wife Sheila, his two sons Stephen and Paul and daughter Margaret.

With injured captain Ben Andrews missing out on a reunion with his former club, along with Jamie Cade and Ryan Woodford, John Maggs was grateful to be able to recall Paul Kennett after missing the last 2 matches through suspension and Farrell’s inclusion saw him making his first competitive appearance for the Hornets in more than 2 years following serious injury.Horsham had the better of the first half play and it wasn’t long before they created their first chance when Mark Zawadski played the long ball upfield for Billy Dunn to head into the path of Pat Harding, whose shot was deflected for a corner. Jahmahl King came forward and got a shot away from the resulting set piece, deep inside the box, but his effort was sent high and wide on the turn. It was Tom Graves’ turn at the next corner to get an attempt on target but his looping header was comfort-ably caught by home goalkeeper Joel Harding. An intelligent pass from Anthony Storey sent Harding away on the left wing where he kept the ball in bril-liantly before sending a cross into the box that Dunn headed to the feet of Peauroux who turned on the spot and struck the base of the post with a left foot shot .Burgess Hill had little to shout about throughout the half, some dangerous looking runs and crosses which fell to no-one was as good as it got for the home side, and on the stroke of half time Kennett had the final chance for the Hornets but his header - from Storey’s free-kick

was comfortably caught by ‘keeper Harding. The Hornets didn’t seem to have the same impetus as they did in the first half and, after some slight pressure, the Hillians broke down the left through Boswell. With Jack Page caught upfield, and with Graves playing the striker onside, Zawadski was left with little option but to rush out of goal. Boswell took the ball round the ‘keeper and had time to look up and place the ball brilliantly in the corner of the net with 3 opposing players on the goal line. With Horsham now chasing the game, Maggs took the gamble of changing to a 3-4-3 formation and throwing Farrell and Davies into the mix. Berry was the player to have the next chance, though, as Burgess Hill looked to kill the game off with a second but his shot across goal was well saved by Zawadski. It was a good job too with several players waiting to come in and put the ball away. The only real chance for Horsham came with Storey getting the ball from a short corner but the mid-fielder’s effort went sailing over the ‘bar. With the visiting fans feeling dejected, the team in green turned on the style as the match entered stoppage time. Graham got the ball to Storey who crossed to the back post where Davies was on hand to poke the ball home. Incredibly, the same fans were celebrating again just seconds later but, this time, their jubilation was premature when referee David

Spain ruled Graves had fouled his man before putting the ball into the net. Confusion reigned with opinion divided upon whether the ball had actually entered the net or not. Fortunately Mr Spain’s free-kick award ensured there would be no controversial conclusion to the evening’s events. The Hornets were buzzing as the match entered 30 minutes of extra-time but there was very little of note from either side. Matt Percival had an effort for the Hillians that went over the bar, and Storey had a free-kick was similarly off target. The final 15 minutes was to prove more exciting, with Burgess Hill applying more pressure but it was Horsham who got the break-through. On the counter attack, Davies had the ball in the right hand corner when, bizarrely, the Burgess Hill players seemed to stop in anticipation of a free kick. The referee hadn’t blown his whistle, though, and Davies put the ball across goal for Farrell to tap into the empty net.The Hillians looked dejected but they didn’t give up, if anything Hor-sham seemed to sit back a bit more. The dangerous Berry put a testing looking cross into the box but King was on hand to turn the ball behind for a corner. Unfortunately the set piece was to be the undoing of Horsham as the ball was whipped in deep towards the back of the six yard box and the unmarked Fogden obliged by putting the ball home to take the tie to a replay.

I was actually excited during the game, something I havent been for a while, maybe I’m just turn-ing into an old git. I was nearly late last night, so didnt have time to look at the team sheet but got a shock when i saw that Cotton wasnt playing, I really thought that put the mockers on our chances. But it was a great per-formance, despite the almighty howler of letting in that goal on 91 mins. The work the team put in during extra time, particularly after the double blow of conced-ing another goal, was great. I moved sides each half so only re-ally saw our left side for most of the game. Boswell was ripping up the ground, and there were some genuinely good passing moves.

Harding had another great game, he really is turning into a good Ryman keeper. As for Horsham, well done for the turnout, a great effort on a Tues night. If the crowd at 200 is right, thats the biggest tues night crowd of the season (for a county cup game!) so far. The Horsham fans are a good bunch, and a class above some other visitors. I think Horsham were a bit undone early on simply by us running and run-ning and running and passing all the time. Once they adjusted and made a couple of subs, they got more possession and calmed down a bit. It’ll be more difficult on that weird pitch at Gorings Mead and we will need to be at full strength to

have a chance at getting through in the replay.Well done Hill, a genuinely en-joyable night, and some real positives to take into the league games.

When I was at Lancing, Andy Pearson (a Lancing player) had a phobia of cotton wool so we put loads in his jeans. When he came back after training he put his hands in his pockets and started freaking out and having a bit of a seizure. He got so mad that he threatened to bring in a dead rat because he lived in a farm house and had some big ones kicking about.

Ramsgate came into the game on the back of two wins with clean sheets, and despite the absence of captain Ben Laslett through personal commitments, confidence was high. It was a bit of a shock therefore when Burgess Hill took a 16th minute lead when a weak shot was deflected past ‘keeper Conor Quinn by Warren Schulz as Danny Curd homed in, although it was Schulz who restored the status quo 2 minutes later with a powerful vol-ley from the edge of the area gave Joel Harding no chance. The Rams nearly took the lead in the 22nd minute when Mitchell Sherwood’s cross found Joe Taylor outside the area, who turned and curled it towards the far top corner, but the ball flew just outside the wood-work. Burgess Hill extended their lead 5 minutes before the interval when a corner ball flew across the goalmouth, assisted by a flick-on header and the ‘keeper’s finger tips and Lloyd Cotton headed in at the

far post. The Rams nearly equalised in the final moments of the half, when Sherwood put the ball over to Schulz in the middle, but ‘keeper Joel Harding did well to block the shot with his legs and, although the ball came back to Schulz he was bundled off the ball by a defender.Ramsgate introduced midfielder Paul Axon for right back Ryan Harker at the break, with a more attacking line-up, and 6 minutes in Mark Lovell swung a ball in from the right to Schulz in the box, but his close range shot went off the crossbar. Burgess Hill extended their lead further in the 57th minute when a poor header by Liam Quinn was intercepted by Curd, who broke to the right before crossing to Steve Harper, who sidestepped a defender before volleying past ‘keeper Quinn. In the 62nd minute Schulz hit the woodwork again, when he beat the defence to Sherwood’s looping cross from the right and headed clear of Harding, but the ball hit the

upright. Four minutes later and Darren Boswell fancied getting the Hillians’ 4th, but his long range effort flew well clear over the goal as well as the wall behind the terrace, while with 4 minutes to go Harper had another good ef-fort, but ‘keeper Quinn saved well. Then, in the 90th minute, a ball from Lovell released Sherwood on another incisive run, but as he cut inside the area and shot at goal a defender’s outstretched arm blocked the shot. Sherwood took the penalty himself, but a great save by Harding kept the score at 1-3.

Well with the Hillians not having a game it was an opportunity to pick another match to watch.

Obvious choices were Crawley Town being close and riding high in the Conference and maybe Eastbourne Borough hosting york City.At the other end of the scale was Lancings FA Vase game at home to Christchurch. However with a beerfest at Mile-stones at Basingstoke it seemed like a good idea to combine that with a trip to watch Farnborough playing at home to Lewes. With Chris Winterton in goal for Lewes it was a great chance to see if he could do well in the step up from Ryman 1 South. Not much has changed since The Hillians visit to Farnborough in the

FA Cup except the stand behind the goal now has loads of seats but is out of bounds at the moment.Entry for old gits is just £6 and a sau-sage (big one) and chips is not bad for £3.

A pint of Hardy and Hansens is just £2 80p in the bar so for a conference side that ‘aint too bad.The football was not that brilliant but the nice part was the fact that for most of the game the ball was played below shoulder height and generally found a player from the same side.

Chris made a couple of “whoopsies”, one a throw out which went to the oppo and another when he tried to kick out from his area only to belt a player from Farnborough which for-tunately went out for a throw in.

He did however tip over a point blank shot when a goal seemed likely and certainly could not be faulted when Farnborough scored the only goal of the game in the 46th minute. With just short of 900 spectators one could be forgiven for expecting a lit-tle more noise but most of the com-ments within earshot were saying what a poor side Lewes were.Maybe that was because Farnbor-ough could not breach the Lewes rearguard.Anyway Farnborough held out but I cannot help thinking that if The Hillians could only keep the ball down and play some quality football they could go further up the table and who knows promotion could be a reality.

Don`t wish to put a dampener on a good start to the season, but why does Gary persist in playing so many players out of there normal posi-tions.

We have Lloyd Cotton who is an ex-cellent goal scoring, forceful mid-fielder playing at full back.

We have Steve Harper who is an out an out goalscorer playing on the right hand side of midfield.

We have Matt Piper who is a superb cultured full back, who was arguably are best player last season playing as a centre back, what a waste of talent!!!I understand that money may be tight to get new players in,but Gary has a good track record of getting players from the County League.

So lets go in to the county league to find good players that want to step up!!!

Page 14: Fanzone Annual

Hard fought narrow away wins can be the most entertaining or nerve wracking games ... depend-ing on whether you are a neutral or a supporter. The chances at either end were numerous, you couldn’t really use words like squandered or missed too often because both keepers - our own Joel Harding and the well-known Ian Chatfield in the Merstham goal - both had excellent games ... and they were busy. After last week’s sleepy start, the good early chances that Merstham created were a worry, and really Hill didn’t have their share of the play in the first 10-15 minutes. That’s partly why this victory was so satisfying as the Hillians gradually took over the balance of play. The side was adjusted slightly from last week with Nick Fogden feeling unwell before the game (eye infec-tion), Neil Watts moved to center

mid to partner Danny Gainsford. With so many chances not taken in the first half, which way would the thoughts of the supporter be turn-ing - I would like to have bugged the dressing room! But the chances continued to be created regularly after break and as Manager Gary Croydon said after the game “As long as chances are be-ing created, there should be nothing too much to worry about.” After an hour of play a lofted ball fell between the collision bound Lloyd Cotton and the Merstham ‘keeper, Cotton reached it just in time and lifted the ball over the goalie and into the net, under the bar. Sam Tucknott played about the last 15 minutes and his quick and ener-getic performance should give home fans something to look forward to seeing when he makes his debut at

Leylands Park. Other new signing, the youngster Tom Bold sat on the bench for this game, along with Youth player Tom Stilwell. Dar-ren Boswell replaced Danny Curd towards the end of the game.Chances continued to flow, and as Merstham put more and more play-ers forward the temptation to be found sitting too deep was coun-tered by the Hill bench vigorously pulling and encouraging the team through the last period of a game that was a good spectacle on what looked a difficult, heavy and tiring surface.

that is the case but since gaining pro-motion from the County League BHTFC have not progressed quite far enough in my view.We flatter to deceive sometimes, just when you think things are looking up we come back down with a bump.Having traded blows in the Doc Mar-tin League with the likes of Kings Lynn (gone now), Salisbury, Corby, East-leigh to name but a few. Then into Ry-man playing Kingstonian, Tonbridge, Hastings, Dover and others and giving most of those sides a good game.Getting close to a Wembly appearance

in the FA Vase and trouncing Newport County in the FA Cup and only beaten by Hereford in the next round.

The point being I have witnessed some good and even great games but when I witness a load of rubbish I feel bound to comment on them. It’s nice to be positive but sometimes a reality check needs to be addressed. Some of the current players at BHTFC would never have got into those sides of yesteryear.Let’s hope for a mass improvement against Eastbourne Town on Saturday.

Well done to the youth for their 5-1 prelim round beating of Westfield (Surrey) We now go to Pagham in the next round with the winners of that game away to Woking. From what i’ve heard, Ashley and his team have put together a really good squad who play very good football.

Great idea by one fan trying to get the numbers up. Pity the FA aren’t so fixated on paying off their large mortgage for the wok in North Lon-don and grab their ankles every time the Premier League shout at them.It might get off the ground another year if there was bit more build up, and supported by the FA, and PUB-LICISED by the leagues themselves, who could pass it on to the clubs, the papers etc.Its a vain hope trying to get top league supporters into non-league games on a regular basis, but a one-off annual shindig might just work.

A draw could be seen as a good result by the home side, consid-ering the result in the reverse fixture. But with Hillians recent results and good form, and, a 2-0 lead ..... well, in the end it was still a good result, and certainly an exciting and entertaining match. The two goal lead lasted until the 40th minute, another 5 minutes might have done the trick. The first goal on 17 minutes came from Matt Percival making his first League start for many weeks after injury, he fired the ball home to finish off a good pass-ing move. The second goal came after 30minutes when a long high ball found Steve Harper out

wide on the right touchline, he brought it down and in the same movement passed it around his marker, running onto the ball and sending an inch perfect pass into the path of Danny Curd to score and finish a move of the highest standard.Hill couldn’t hold the lead until halftime, on 40 minutes Joe Gat-ting poked one home from close range after heavy pressure from Whitehawk. After the break as expected, Whitehawk encour-aged by their goal continued tirelessly to seek the equaliser. Saverio Arona now replaced Matt Percival, dropping in at right back with Neil Watts mov-ing to midfield. With about an

hour gone Whitehawk won a free kick on the edge of the Hill Box, the kick was fired into the wall and a penalty given for handball. Although Joel Harding in goal, went the right way the shot was firmly hit and the score now 2 -2.If we had the better of the first half, it was now the turn of the opposition. Right upto the final whistle - heavy Hawks pressure. A couple of smart stops from the Hillian’s keeper towards the end of the game kept the scores level. Lloyd Skinner replaced Danny Curd for the later stages. A quali-ty entertaining game, Hill maybe a little happier with the point than high-flying Whitehawk.

1) A burger or kit kat- but cant because the wagon has been shut for 2 games (not includ-ing a saturday off as well)

2) A shirt or mug - but cant because the shop has been shut for er.........nearly the whole season

I want to read;1) Some notes in the programme from GC (yes, really!)2) Some info about the commercial side of the club, why have a new shirt?, whats happening this year with the club, how many people are in the 400 club, how many people have members cards.

It is not good enough to have no merchandise on sale at all and to have the wagon shut for two games in a row.

Are more volunteers needed? Has anyone asked?

I understand that financing the ground, the utility bills, and the players are the key items but if you do not match the expecta-tions of the Ryman league fans with food, info and a bit of qual-ity people will not turn up.

The visible commercial side for the supporters needs to be back where it was a year ago, and

pronto. I dont know why the shop and wagon are shut because there is no info. Give the info to Dan and Pete to put it in the programme and tell me and then I’ll shut up! You get better service on the catering, goods, and info front at East Grin-stead (for instance). Sort it please!

Incidentally, the tea served in the bar the last two games has been bet-ter then anything thats come out of that wagon in the last two years. And if we are not selling anything (other than at the bar, how does that help the club??.

GC is taking another holiday and feels he can leave the running of the side to his minions.Well don’t suggest I don’t have the club at heart because I miss the oc-casional game due to other commit-ments.

How dedicated can one be.For someone wanting at least a play off place it does seem odd that holi-days are more important than the progression of the side. Now if one had to go to Helmund Province that may be a different story.

IT WAS third time lucky for Hillians in league derby matches although poor finishing meant they had to wait until the second half to finally put the bottom club in their place. After previous defeats at Wor-thing and Bognor, Hillians went into Saturday’s game on the back of a midweek cup derby success at Eastbourne but desperately needing a league win to put their play-off push back on track. From the opening whistle it looked only a matter of time before the floodgates opened but they had to wait until the 54th minute to turn their obvious superiority into a lead and from there it was plain sailing.Poor YM have got through 70 players this season but new man-ager John Cumberbatch opened with a home draw with Worthing five days earlier and probably fostered hopes of taking some-thing from this match. But it was surely never a possibility despite Hillians leaving their shooting boots at home in the first half. There was even the rare sight of

Steve Harper missing a penalty, blazing high and wide after 21 minutes, and he must have been a relieved man when finally opening the scoring as gifted 16 year-old Ollie Lockyer swung over a good cross that was head-ed on by Danny Gainsford for the talismanic striker to nip in ahead of keeper Mark Fox, sport-ing a sticking plaster on the nose after his injury caused a lengthy stoppage in the first half.It was 2-0 on 64 minutes when Lockyer this time delivered an inswinging corner that Gains-ford headed in and a minute after that Lloyd Cotton snaked his way along the line and scored from an outrageous angle. That enabled home boss Gary Croydon to ring the changes and one of the subs, Patterson, put Harper and Danny Curd through in quick succession before the twin strike force made amends almost immediately by fashion-ing the fourth goal on 73 min-utes. Former Hassocks defender Sol Bowra, who conceded the first-half penalty for a foul on

Curd, was mugged on the half-way line and Harper sent in Curd for a clinical finish. That at least helped give the scoreline a more realistic look although really Hillians could have had double figures as they tore the visitors to shreds.Young Lockyer was superb in midfield and is surely destined for a bright future in the game but while his team-mates enjoyed the relative freedom of the park, their finishing caused frustration both on an off the pitch. But it hardly mattered in the end and the catalogue of misses will be forgotten quickly although that perhaps may not have been the case had Gavin Gordon not put the home misses to shame with an awful finish when put clean through five minutes be-fore half time.Yet home goals seemed inevita-ble at some stage and top class approach play left manager Gary Croydon believing his side now have the quality to secure a top five finish with a shade more consistency.

Agree with your comments Smurf. As I said in my report “not very profes-sional”.I read about one supporter of Gosport Borough who said their manager oc-casionally made some sensible com-ments on their fans forum. Not that I would expect GC to do that but he certainly could get something put in the programme. Many people have computers and I accept there are things on the BHTFC website to view but transversely not everyone does have access. And not only that it’s pretty much tra-dition to have a few words from the

I haven’t been to the last 4 games but I’m not aware of much changing re the above. I would certainly expect something in the programme from “the man-agement” in every programme. Eve-ryone could take it in turns, chair-man, GC, commercial, ladies team, etc etc. Thats not too onerous - or even just tell Dan and co what to wirte and they just read it before its printed. How hard or time-consuming can that be? We SHOULD be selling whatever merchandise we have avail-able to sell (a glass display case in the bar if we cant be arsed to open the shop? - seen that at seceral clubs, and it works). Sorry to bang on about this but its really grinding my gears

manager in the programme.Unfortunately one only has to make a midly negative comment or remark at this club and they are classed as a vil-lain.Ok we are only level eight (ie only eight consecutive promotions to the Premiership) but we certainly could be more professional towards sup-porters of both the home fans and our visitors.Lack of it only gives rise to those com-ments from the likes of that Big club on the South coast.

Keep an eye on Bognor . Played 4 fewer games than us and only 2 points behind. Although, when you typed this they may have already been above us...I can’t remember!

5th in the league looks like our ‘top of the table’ in my book. I can’t see the top 4 being penetrable for us after the games in hand are made up. I reckon Leatherhead, Met Police, Bognor and Whitehawk will occupy the top 4 with a decent cushion by the end of the sea-son.

This isn’t a criticism of BHTFC in any way. We have had a great season and a top 5 finish would be awesome if we managed to hang on. I just think they are missing the consistency that the high flyers in this difficult league seem to possess, to finish any higher than 5th this year.

Chris White was forced to make changes to the side that stole a late equaliser at Corinthian Casuals on Saturday with influential captain Tony Timms suspended. Ryan Peake replaced him at the heart of defence and Tom Manton was named as captain for the night, however there were just two other changes to the starting eleven with Mike Huckett returning to the side and striker Ryan McBride making his home debut. Despite naming a strong side, Worthing were sluggish to start and capitulated at the back; conceding four goals within the first 25 min-utes.It took just seven minutes for the visitors to grab their first of the night as Ollie Lockyer capitalised on Seb Barton’s mistake to tap in after the dual signed Eastbourne Borough goalkeeper spilt a cross. It could easily have been 2-0 mo-ments later, but Steve Harper’s lob dropped wide of the far post with Barton beaten. It was only a matter of time before the Hillians doubled their advantage though, and the match was just 12 minutes old when Harper fended off Zac Beda and tucked the second under Barton. Harper then had another chance to score, but could only drag wide from 20 yards. On 20 minutes the Rebels gave themselves a lifeline with Mike Huckett turning in John Lansdale’s free-kick from close range, however it was Burgess Hill who were piling on the pressure and Patterson was denied on the goal line by Lansdale as Worthing breathed a sigh of relief. Just a minute later the visi-tors had added a third though. With

the Worthing defence struggling to cope with long balls over the top, Patterson easily beat Lansdale and placed clinically into the bottom corner from the edge of the penalty area, and it was less than a minute before Ollie Lockyer finished Pat-terson’s low cross to make it 4-1.With just a quarter of the match played the Rebels were three goals down, and seemingly out, although it could have been worse with Gi-useppe Sanso’s 30 yard strike ruled out for a deflection from his offside teammate. Will Berry and Darren Boswell both also had chances for the Hillians but were unable to take them, and Worthing should have clawed back another on 36 minutes but Terry Dodd shot straight at the advancing goalkeeper when clear through in the penalty area. There was only a minute left to play before the break when the visitors scored their fifth following more sloppy Worthing defending. Pat-terson was allowed space on the flank and provided a cross to the far post where the unmarked Darren Boswell produced a wonderful pow-ered volley which cannoned down and, according to the linesman, across the line. Terry Dodd headed just over the bar from a Luke Gedling corner with seconds of the first half remaining; however the game was almost already beyond the Rebels’ reach.Half-time: Worthing 1-5 Burgess Hill TownThe second half was far less eventful than the first, but just eight min-utes after the restart the away side had capped their win with another goal as Steve Harper broke through

and slotted beyond Seb Barton to wrap the game up. With half an hour remaining the Rebels made a triple substitution with Tom Lawley, Shaun Charles and Mike James in-troduced to the game, but excluding a Lawley shot which was saved by Burgess Hill goalkeeper Joel Hard-ing, the home side were unable to produce an inspired comeback. In fact, it could have been worse had Harper not been denied a hat-trick by the woodwork as his powerful strike from long range struck the crossbar. The Rebels now have until Satur-day to evaluate exactly where it all went wrong on a very disappointing night at the A2B Stadium. Obvi-ously the absence of captain Tony Timms in the heart of the defence had an impact on the side’s overall performance; however there was seemingly a lack of a cutting edge across the park. To have any hope of overcoming Folkestone Invicta in the FA Trophy this weekend Chris White’s side will have to improve significantly.

Header says it all really. The Italians are returning to their homeland which is a great shame and presumably Ronnie has finally got pissed off bench warming. Thanks to those three players for their efforts. Really sorry to see these three leaving, the Italians go-ing home is unavoidable.

However, it was getting more obvi-ous that Ronnie was not valued by the management team which again appears to be at odds with most sup-porters that I speak with. Ronnie

moans and groans I NEARLY went to Worthing or Whitehawk to watch a game today but had a “moment of clarity” before leaving!! What the hell was I think-ing

Oh, and another point. Is the club TOTALLY sure about the water pipe cladding in the clubhouse? Hay-wards Heath have just had their changing rooms flooded and Grin-steads bar resembled Venice by all accounts the other day due to frozen pipes. VERY inconvenient and ex-pensive no doubt.

Harry H

was not just a quick runner he could get in crosses, would take an oppor-tunity to get into the box and could do what others seem unable to do, hold the ball when under pressure.

Good luck to the Italians.

Ronnie, good luck and you will be remembered well by the majority of fans for your contribution to the team.

Not surprised by the news that they can no longer afford to pay the play-ers. Their crowds have fallen away dramatically this season and they no longer have the income from Maid-stone Utd.On our visit there this season, the bloke selling raffle tickets nearly fainted when i purchased some and the bar was getting very little custom. Time for a dose of reality for players at levels 3,4 and below and accept that they should be playing for the fun and privilage and not for financial reward. I would imagine that many clubs at non league level are running on empty.

A goal from Tom Parkinson in the second minute, in his second game since joining on loan from Maid-stone United, gave Hill a great start. A ball which was headed in and out of the goalmouth a number of times eventually come down at the feet of the defender for the goal. After that, the tempo of the game

rarely dropped and although the home side finished the half with the narrow lead, the visitors probably spent more time in their opponents half of the pitch. The tempo remained high in the second half and the Hillians enjoyed much more of the game as the ‘end to end’ intensity continued against

one of the League’s newcomers who have had big wins this year over serious title contenders.Faversham equaliser with about 15 minutes to go during a goalmouth melee, and although Hill had good chances to win the game after that - this is a decent point against a form side.

You’d have to have a serious set of beer goggles on to say we could survive in the Prem, assuming of course we stay in 5th and win two play-off games. But there again, is anyone else below us in a better position? Worthing are the only ones with the background set-up (as far as I know) but that aint happening this year.So if it stays as it is, or we are replaced in 5th by another club around us it still looks like Bognor to up auto-matically and one from Leatherhead, Whitehawk or Met, and frankly I’m not bothered either way.I guess it would be quite nice to ac-tually get rid of the Met into another league, but is that really a rational ba-sis for promotion??!!

a much needed game for the Hill-ians, in front of Nyewood Lane’s biggest crowd of the season so far, 468, and on a good surface, this was a quality game ... until the last 8 minutes. The final score being a lit-tle flattering to home side. Although the BH management will be the first to admit that today Bognor were the better team. The home side had raced into a two-goal first half lead (including a penalty), Hillians badly needed a goal before half time, which didn’t

come, but it did come early in the second half. On 55 minutes Lloyd Cotton forced the ball home from close range. The Hillians now had a period of sustained pressure, during which the young Bognor keeper made the home fans sweat after rushing off his line and out of his area to bring Steve Harper down. After some delay he was shown a yellow card, it maybe could have been different, it could maybe have changed the game ... maybe ... maybe.

Bognor rode out the pressure and with time running out for Burgess Hill, it was obvious that it was never their intention to quietly see the game out. Numbers were moved forward into attack searching for an equaliser .... that’s when the two late Bognor goals came to put the game beyond doubt.

Now I’m not pleading poverty just yet but for me more importantly is the performance of the team and the hon-esty of the management. Mr Croydon was quoted as saying we were the better side in the second half at Walton. What good was that when we were 2-0 down and still couldn’t score and still let another one in late in the game.We were muscled out of the game ear-ly on and never looked like breaking down their defence.I might not feel so keen to turn up and join the other malcontents who have deserted the Hillians in the last couple of seasons.Waspie remarked that no harm was done as other teams around us are losing as well. The harm done was not keeping in touch with the leadersJust a little more effort and good man-agement might have seen us joining the current big four.Of course those other clubs could well be saying the same thing.Back to Sponges main point, especial-ly the point about the Hillians stutter-ing along. That extra effort and challenging (honestly) the big four would leave me no alternative to make all of those games.Quite frankly we are not anywhere good enough for that although I ac-cept we are a good mid table side.

worth it?

Page 34: Fanzone Annual

The game remained goaless until almost the stroke of halftime, when Lloyd Cotton forced his way past several defenders to get to the goal-line and then towards goal, firing at the narrowest of gaps to shoot the ball high into the Chipstead net.In the second half the crowd en-joyed Burgess Hill’s passing game, Hill gaining control of the game through Steve Harper’s assured finish on about 70 minutes. and a few minutes later substitute Dar-ren Boswell adding the 3rd for his second goal of the week.

With ‘keeper Joe Harding sus-pended for one match, the big news of the day was always going to be the debut, in goal, of Youth Teamer Tom Betts who only turned 17 last month. He was properly tested by Chipstead and had the answers each time, especially getting down so quickly to deflect the ball away at his near post, the score then being 1-0, probably a very important stop.A dramatic first few minutes to the game saw Chips No.9 Denver Mc-Kenzie sent off for violent conduct after leaving Nick Fogden on the ground for some time getting treat-ment to his chest.

how it all ended up

Page 37: Fanzone Annual

Congrats to the youth for their Ry-man youth League and County cup double. A fine achievement for one of the youngest squads in the league. A great achievement, and they’ve had some brilliant wins along the way. I hope we can keep hold of some of the lads as they get older and closer to first team football - difficult when you are not running a reserve side.

It’s a big step up if called upon to play in the Ryman League. Any side north of Redhill always appear a lit-tle more streetwise and our younger players get overawed quite naturally.I’m sure if anyone can see talent emerging it will be Ashley Carr and his playing experience will be a fine asset.

After counting all the votes there was an out and out winner, Joel Harding! After accumulating the highest number of clean sheets of a hillian goalkeeper for 20 years and playing more games for the hill this season than any other player Joel is a worthy winner!
