Interview with Ola from Ola's Kool Kitchen

You're from Chicago right? How come You work

n London?

Well I was a student at Boston University. I came

to London on an exchange program in 1991 and I

oved it so much I dropped out and I decided thiswas my home and stayed.

Can You say something about Sydney? Were you

a DJ there also?

Actually I wasn't a DJ in Sydney. I went to

Australia at the end of doing a long haul traveling

trip across Europe and south east asia. I had a 1

year Australian work visa which I used. I went to

Perth. Then I spent most of my time in Sydney.Then I visited Byron Bay and ended up living in

Nimbin for a couple of months which turned out

to be my favourite place in Australia.

Can You say something about Your show on

Radio 23?

I moved my show from Radio Nowhere around

four years ago to Radio23. Radio23 is a non-

commercial, freeform radio station founded by

Programming Director Jeff Hylton Simmons and

aunched in 2009. Based out of Portland, Oregon,

where it supports the local artists and community,

the station's goal is to provide an international

artistic platform for home broadcasters around

the world, and to teach anyone around the world

how to create radio with a computer and an

nternet connection. Every two hours, a new live

broadcaster shows up from somewhere in the

I joined Rock XS maybe about 1 year and half ago.

Semen and Grooviness?

This is a project by my very good friend and really

one of the funniest people I know, Vince Ynzunza.

War, Semen and Grooviness is a Pop Art and

primordial philosophical movement that

recognizes the destructive qualities of War, the

creative elements of Semen and the Fab aesthetic

of Grooviness as the three Archetypes which

Radio Nowhere?

Radio Nowhere is where I started. I broadcast

there for about 1 year. Christopher Laird is the

station manager that has a great show. He used to

do sound for the BBC and then created his own

station with various other shows. My show was

inspired by his and he gave me great advice as to

About 5 and a half years.

What did you listen when in teenage years?

A lot of British new wave stuff and electronic stuff

ike New Order, Depeche Mode, Erasure, Yazoo,

Communards, Love and Rockets, The Cure, and

n my later teens The Pixies, The Stone Roses all

the English baggie Madchester, shoegaze stuff.

What do you listen today?

I listen to a lot of different styles of music,

because good music has no boundaries but I stillretain my love of shoegaze.

What's your favorite band this month?

Honestly I don't have a favourite band of the

month. But I have a song I really like and I'll

mention it here lately I just dig, Tame Impala-

Why Won't They Talk To Me.

What's the latest band you recorded live?

One Unique Signal a Kool Kitchen favourite is a

London based five piece playing loud repetitiveexperimental music. The band also perform live

and record as The Telescopes alongside founder

Stephen Lawrie since 2010

On what show was it?

Actually it's yet to be broadcast, but that is the last

band I recorded.

What's the latest band you interviewed?

Well actually the last interview I did was also a

guest DJ on my show Gregg Foreman. He gained

recognition originally as the front man of the

band The Delta 72 and now plays in Cat Power,

The Meek, The Black Ryder and Pink

Mountaintops.

What show was it on?

That will be on next weeks show.

What is the favorite band you recorded live?

My favourite recording of a band? I have several

but probably the show with The Cult of Dom

Keller and my first recording of The Telescopes

live. I asked Stephen Lawrie (the lead singer in

The Telescopes) to please sing one of my favourite

love songs he wrote, You Set My Soul. He said he

didn't think the band could learn it in time for the

gig, but he did a special accoustic version of it just

for me after the gig and just for my show. It's is a

treasure in my recordings and experiences as a

broadcaster.

What was the coolest interview you've done?

One of my easiest and interesting was Dave

Bermen from The Silver Jews. I didnt have to do

anything. He just started talking and I just

interrupted occasionally with a thought or two. It

was intelligent and thought provoking naturally.

Thats when it is great and thats what Im looking

for: sparks, inspiration and ideas.

You have a lot of shows on Internet Archive. Do

you like their service? Why Internet Archive?

The service is not great, I can only see how many

people have downloaded the show. I have no idea

how many people just play it. What I like is I have

no limit of how many I can store so eventually

they will all be up there when I can find the time

to upload them. Why IA? Well it's free too.

Do you have your shows online anywhere else?

a show up for 1 week on the site. But you can

Which one will be the next band in your studio?
