Fall Updates

Modular Classrooms: This summer, all required paperwork was submitted to the Town and State for their approval. In the days following, the Town of Greenburgh’s Planning Board reviewed our site request for modulars. While it was a LONG evening, in the end, our request was approved. Last week, the State made a site visit. They walked

through every building, and reviewed the larger request we have made to the State regarding improving all of our facilities. It was a good meeting, and we are hopeful that they will support at least some of our recommended initiatives. We can start building the modulars as soon as we learn of our approval. We will keep you posted!

Playground: This summer, we learned from KaBOOM that the funding partner unexpectedly backed out of our playground project. They left us with hope, though; as they stated that we are on top of their priority list, and our next chance for funding will be next spring. Even so, we are continuing to explore every avenue for bringing a playground to Fanwood.

Changes in Family Fun Day: This year we will have Family Fun Day on four (4) occasions, rather than once a month. We are reducing the number of days, so that we can really make each one a special event. Additionally, we will provide transportation to and from the Woodlawn station, in an effort to alleviate some of the transportation struggles that our parents face.

Parent Advisory Council The Thursday, October 3rd Parent Advisory Council meeting is canceled, due to the Back to School event scheduled for that evening.

Back To School Night This new event will be held on Thursday, October 3rd from 5:30-8:00. Contact your child’s principal with any questions.

Parent Teacher Conference Night Parent Teacher Conference Night will be held on November 14th, from 3-8 pm.

Food Friday in Amy Kushner's Class By Amy Kushner Recently, Cori Wagner's class joined my class for our first "Food Friday". Each Friday we'll make a special snack related to our read aloud book.

This week we read "Chicka Chicka Boom Boom" by Bill Martin, Jr. For our special snack, we made a coconut tree out of graham crackers, alphabet cereal, apples, and grapes.

“All About Me” Silhouette Collage in Sabrina Catania’s Class September 20, 2013 Sabrina Catania

Our class worked on an “All About Me” project. The goals of the project were to work on language development and build self-awareness. The students had fun sharing more about themselves and learning more about each other.

Fanwood Food Bank Garden Have you seen our garden recently? It is GROWING! The students have been busy harvesting luscious vegetables for the local food bank!

The Fanwood Food Bank Garden is a cooperative effort between New York School for the Deaf and the Food Bank of Westchester. This garden provides an opportunity for our students to utilize their life skills, work on vocational training and give back to the community. In addition it provides our students in health and science

classes the opportunity to get hands-on experience by learning different aspects of how the garden works.

With the assistance and guidance of the Food Bank’s Food Growing Program Coordinator, Mr. Douglas DeCandia, we are growing organic vegetables and herbs in the space provided on our campus. Once we harvest the vegetables and herbs, The Food Bank of Westchester distributes the produce from the garden to various local food pantries.

Fanwood’s Nightmare Manor is right around the corner and several of you have already asked about how you can help. We have several committees and now we need volunteers for the following committees:

• Admissions • Parking/Security • Actors • Make Up • Children's Spooktacular • Food/Concessions

If you are interested in volunteering, please contact the Haunted House committee: contact Allison Brooks ([email protected])

Do you have any of these items lying around your house unused? If so, can we borrow them for the Haunted House?

• Corn Stalks • Pumpkins (big & small) • Crystal Ball • Tarot Cards • Ouija Board • Hair Spray • Old White T-Shirts for

mummy costumes (We cannot give these back to you…they will be ripped to shreds!)

Are you interested in being an actor in the Haunted House? Do you want to be on a committee? Please consider volunteering…we appreciate your help! Contact Allison Brooks [email protected]

Fanwood Celebrates 75 Years in White Plains!

Although New York School for the Deaf was established in 1817 and is nearly 200 years old, this year, we celebrate a different anniversary. This September we invited alumni and the entire community to celebrate 75 years in White Plains. In 1939, New York School

for the Deaf left Manhattan and moved to Knollwood Road in White Plains. We feel fortunate to have such a rich history and look forward to continued success in the future! Fanwood'Alum'from''
