My Dinner of Admiration

Page 2: fantasydinner

Welcome to my dinner!

Tonight’s guests are all very dear to me. They are people I admire very much.

By telling you of my guests I will also be telling something about myself. Our idols are a part of our personalities. They give us information about our taste, our interests and the kind of people we have respect for and show admiration for.

Let’s have a look at the guests at my dinner!

Let me introduce…. Mr Paul

Auster!Paul Auster is a writer from USA.

He lives in Brooklyn, New York together with his wife, the author Siri Hustvedt.

Paul Auster has written over 20 books.

He writes fiction, poetry, screenplays and essays.

I have loved Paul Auster since I was 15 years old and read his book The New York Trilogy for the first time.

His books are often about themes such as losing your identity, finding your way in a big and lonely world and literature. Also, he has a very cool personality. He represents a part of America that I really love; the intellectual America. He has a lot to say and is such an interesting person.

I have invited Paul Auster because he is truly my idol.

I would love to talk to him about his writing and the different themes he uses in his novels.

I am also quite obsessed with how he and his wife the wonderful author Siri Hustvedt, also one of my favourite authors, lead their lives in New York.

During my dinner I would ask Paul Auster about his stories and I would discuss my ideas on his writing and ask what he was thinking of them. That discussion could last for hours…

I would also ask him about his views on the American society and American

culture.

My second guest is… Mr Serge

Gainsbourg!Serge Gainsbourg was a French singer, actor and writer.

He was born in 1928 and died in 1991.

Even though he is very controversial he is still one of the most poplular artists in France.

His most famous song is the very dirty song ”Je t’aime… Moi non plus…” which he recorded with his wife Jane Birkin.

He is the father of the famous actress, model and singer Charlotte Gainsbourg.

When I was a teenager I saw a documentary about Serge Gainsbourg and I was so fascinated and glued to the TV that my boyfriend got jealous…I had heard the song Je t’aime but had never known who was the person behind it. Now I started to listen to the rest of his music.

I love French culture and Serge Gains-bourg plays an important part of French culture in the 20th century.

I would love to talk to Serge about his interesting life, how he could become such a big star in France even though he sang about sex, incest, drugs and alcohol.

I would also love to ask him about his destructive way of living, if he would change his life if he could.

If Serge would come alive for my dinner I would also ask him about his views on French society today.

I would also confront Serge about his views on women because even though he made a lot of women very famous his songs and videos were often questionable in a feminist perspective.

And last but not least…. Mr Woody

Allen! As you maybe remember Woody Allen is a film maker from New York.

He has directed almost 50 movies, most of them set in New York with himself as the lead character.

Woody Allen is one of the most famous movie directors and he can get almost any star to play in his movies.

He’s made movies like Annie Hall, Everybody says I love you and Midnight in Paris.

Woody Allen is also someone who I have admired since I was a teenager.

I really like the tone of his movies and the fast dialogue. I’m a sucker for New York and so is he.

I think Woody Allen is a good actor and he writes scripts that can be read as literature, which I think is great. One other thing is that he often works with actors that I like, for example Alan Alda.

If Woody was my guest I would ask him about how he gets his ideas for his movies.

I would also talk to him about how he writes movies that seem to be about himself and the women around him.

I would also like to ask him about his obsession for New York and Paris, two cities that often play a big part in his films.

I have invited these guests because they have a lot in common:

• They are people I admire very much

• They have all been to New York and Paris a lot. • They are all of Jewish heritage, something that is important for their work.

• They all have something to do with incest: Woody Allen actually married his wife’s adopted daughter; Paul Auster’s latest novel deals with incest and Serge Gainsbourg wrote the song Lemon Incest and recorded it with his daughter Charlotte.

• They are all, just like me, fanatic about talking about culture, literature, religion, psychology, philosophy and life.

Bon Appetit!
