Fan and blower selection

.1 Selecting a fan or blower

The required airflow and ventilating resistance of equipment must be determined when selecting a fan or a blower. However, accurate determination of a ventilating resistance is difficult. In general you can select a fan's max. airflow by multiplying the required airflow by 1.3 to 1.5. The following figure [Fig. 6] shows the case of an air channel with an area approximately equal to that of the fan. If an adequate air channel is not available due to a high density of mounted parts, a fan with a max. airflow of more than two times the required airflow is sometimes needed. In this case, a special fan for a high static pressure region or a blower is recommended.Dynetics would like to help you to determine the ventilation resistance of equipment exactly; If 3D data of the device is available, we can work with fan manufacturers to calculate the resistance.

Calculation of the required fan airflow

The airflow (ventilation rate) required for the internal cooling is calculated as follows:

Q =W

ρ×C × T

=W

Q : Required airflow〔m3/s〕

W: Heat generation rate 〔W 〕

ρ: Specific weight of air〔kg / m3〕

C : Specific heat of air 〔J / kg°C〕

Performance degradation of PQ characteristics when options are installed

Options such as a fan guard and filter are sometimes installed for safety. These options, however, increase the ventilation resistance and noise. A fanguard has slight ventilation resistance and degrades the PQ characteristicsonly negligibly. However, when tightly fitted onto a fan, the noise levelincreases by about +1 to +5 dB. In particularly, options should be installedmore than 10 mm away from the fan to minimize the increase in noise.Using a □120 mm×38 mm AC fan (CN55B3) as an example, fluctuationsof the PQ characteristics when options are installed are plotted in Figs. 12and 13.

Super silent multiblade blowers (radial fans) realize cooling to the point More pressure and airflow at axial type of fans

Fans with many options

the unit that request a cooling becomes smaller by the day and request an increase of performance and efficiency .To follow such trend in efficiency at the cooling of such a unit request a high qualified type of fan with either a high static pressure or a compact or a compact and super silent multiblade blower.Dynetics offers for the cooling of electric- or electronic-equipment a new family of axial- and radial fans from market leaders of suppliers.

On customer request we can integrate extra intelligence into the fan.Our DC type of fans and blowers can be expended with for instance an alarm functions that respond in case that a difference in the speed occur. Fans with this alarm function and assembled in a system will help to switch off the equipment in time at the moment that the fan is starting to show problems. This will extend the lifetime of the unit.An integrated speed control, and managed by a PWM input (Pulse With Modulation) enables the equipment to fine tune the speed according the momentary demand; resulting in a reduction of the power consumption and of noise. This speed control option is showing his advantages when for instance the equipment is in a sleeping status.

.2 What's new

Super silent multi-blade blower,

the low-noise blowers (less than 44 dBA) such as The E0720 series from Japan Servo, have a narrow 20 mm design. They are ideally suited in densely installed devices for precise cooling.

Brand new are the blowers of the L-series in the higher performance class of the E1033 fans. These blowers are now also based on the same principle of a motor with the patented double damping unit, and also here prevents the vibrations produced by the blower.

Low Noise and vibration: low cogging

The new designed family of fans from Nidec represent a combination of excellent performance together with a very high of reliability rate, a minimum of noise and vibrations. The reduction of vibrations has been realised by a special rotor housing. This, together with a double balanced fan blade resulted in a very efficient fan. The efficiency is proofed by the very low level of rpower consumption. The UltraFlo family include: 40mm; 60mm, 80mm, 120m of axiale fans.

Market trends for equipment where cooling is required demand high-density and miniaturisation in design, requiring a re-think on fan design

Today’s equipment requires quality fans with high static pressure capabilities, which are optimised to raise thecooling efficiency. The criteria for differentiation of fans includes a list beginning with motor design, the slotpole combination for efficiency and power saving. Material selection calls for long life, the use of magnets andplastics, and a strong housing. An efficient design method is also needed for low acoustic noise.

Motor design

Dynetics assists engineers across Europe in selecting the most suitable motor according to applicationrequirements. It represents motor manufacturers and offers a range of small motors, based on varioustechnologies and can customise many motors to meet specifications. The company also supplies coolingequipment, axial instrument ventilators and radial blowers from manufacturers. One of which, Nidec Servoillustrates the company’s fan design technology.Nidec Servo selected a three-phase brushless motor and immediately saw a 10 per cent increase in efficiency, compared to a single-phase motor. Further improvements were realised by increasing the diameter, making themotor more powerful.By using SmFeN instead of ferrite as magnet material, the magnetic flux increased by a factor of 1.4, and thehigher HFe (high ferrite) magnet material prevents demagnetisation, reports the company.

The G-series fans are cUL/TUV-approved and offered in plastic or aluminium housings

.2 What's new

Page 7: FANS & BLOWERS - dyneticsaxial fans mounted in series, are usually considered. However, these offer disadvantages due to the direction of air-flow, physical size and cost. Keeping

The fan blades are made of polyphenylene sulfide (PPS), preventing the deformation at high speed at hightemperature.

For high static pressure applications, diagonal flow fans, (which expel air in a centrifugal direction) or twoaxial fans mounted in series, are usually considered. However, these offer disadvantages due to the direction ofair-flow, physical size and cost.Keeping up with market trends and demands using traditional design methods, can be time-consuming,involving manufacturing and testing many trial samples.New techniques, such as computational fluid dynamics (CFD), have been introduced to assist in the designprocess. However, when using CFD, it is necessary to understand the complexities of axial fan design whichhave been refined over many years. Therefore, the important point is how CFD is mastered.

In recognition of this fact, Nidec Servo has developed the fan optimisation design system, which combines all the strengths of CFD with an optimisation technique to model a new design offering the desired characteristics.By understanding the pressure distribution, it is possible to arrive at the best design to reduce noise occurrence, according to the effectiveness of the blade shape. By numerical simulations, the CFD analysis detects the large-scale, unsteady states of the blade tip, as well as the mechanisms of aerodynamic noise generation in the fan for industrial or home use.In addition, innovative design techniques for fan’s blades using CFD can be applied to the design of rotor cascades for low-noise fans. The special shape of the fan blade, shows not only in better result in airflow, but also in a low noise level.

Using this system, Nidec Servo has developed its G-series axial fan range (Figure 1) to meet both high level performance requirements and specific application demands.

Nidec Servo's Gentle Typhoon

Nidec Servo offers a box fan with high performance and low noise made with their cutting edge technologyNoise is often the summary of a number of different conditions. One way is to reduce the noise as created by the airflow. With the availability of present design- and analytical tools, this problem has been solved for a great share. More difficult however is to reduce the noise as caused by the Brushless DC motor BLDC motor.

The 2-way vibration reduction protects against resonant noise throughout the device2-way noise reduction by using (a) a large motor having low flux rotation torque and (b) a noise absorbing structure;result in a big reduction of vibration transferred from the motor to the venture. When designed into your product, less noise from the fan casing results in noise suppression throughout the device.

Timbre is also a factor!A smoother rotation with lowered cogging torque was achieved by optimizing motor torque exclusive for low speed applications resulting in a dramatic improvement in noise quality. From the noise spectrum comparison it is easy to discern a prominent difference in the noise waves especially in the quiet zone. Try the improvement timbre of the Gentle Typhoon in your own device. The „Gentle Typhoon“ fan is 5 dB more silent than other fans and with the depth of only 25 mm offer the same air performance as fans with 32mm depth. With this reduction of 7mm the designer can reduce the air impedance of the complete unit, and improve the air-performance and efficiency. The new implemented Brushless DC-Motor together with the latest technology of driver-IC’s on the integrated PCB, realized a power consumption of ca. 30%. On customer request these fans can be supplied with speed sensors and PWM controllers.

Speed control and speed control (PWM or 0-10 V input) are available .

The fans are available for supply voltages of 12, 24 and 48 VDC. They are particularly suitable for cooling heavy industrial applications and in the telecom sector. All models can be supplied with speed, threshold and blockage signal outputs. Japan Servo also manufactures customized solutions with modified electronics and signal input for speed control. Upon customer request, fans are equipped with intelligence. Fans and fans for DC operation can be equipped with an alarm function during speed reduction (detection of speed fluctuations and blockage, pulse output / tacho signal). With this warning signal, systems can easily be switched off by the power supply in case of problems, thus optimizing the use of the device and its life.

Also variable-speed operation is possible via a PWM input (pulse width modulation), which can further reduce power consumption and noise. This is particularly advantageous in the idle state of a device.

More pressure and flow

Where conventional axial fans are used to reduce the volume flow when there is a high pressure drop in the unit, the new G Series from Japan Servo offers a solution. For high-demand applications, commonly used are diagonal fans or two fans in series. The integrated pressure chamber with stationary blades ensures that there is significantly more pressure and volume flow at the operating point and that the fans deliver above-average performance.First and foremost are performance, reliability and long service life. The fan has an aluminum housing (Venturi) to cool the powerful engine, ensuring a life of at least 100,000 hours at 40 ˚C.

Where, in the case of conventional axial fans, the volumetric flow decreases and there is an increased pressure loss in the device the new G range from Nidec Servo a solution.

With the increasing power loss of the components in electronic assemblies, the air cooling reaches its limits. The integrated pressure chamber with stationary blades ensures that at the operating point much more pressure and volume flow is available and the fans perform above average. In contrast to radial fans where the flow direction changes centrifugally and by 90 °, the outgoing straight air flow flows 180 ° to the mounting flange. The new G-fan series shows that energy can be saved.First and foremost are performance, reliability and long service life. The fan has an aluminum housing (venturi) to cool the powerful engine, ensuring a life of at least 100,000 hours at 40˚C.The fans are available with dimensions of □ 92x38mm; □ 120x38mm and 172mm diameter and now a □ 134x38mm would also be added to the fan row.New is the addition to the range is the G1438B48BNZP-00The axial fan with dimensions 134 x 38mm, has been developed with an energy efficient (30% efficient) DC motor, an optimized impeller, and provides max. 3380Pa and 11.4m3 / min. A similar performance was possible only with larger fans. Speed monitoring and speed control (PWM or 0-10V input) are available as required. The new axial fans are available in 48VDC.They are particularly suitable for cooling of heavy industrial applications and in the telecom sector.
