Welcome Mark Wilkinson

Principal Cornet & Band Manager

On behalf of all at Foden's I hope you had a great Christmas and send our best wishes for 2018.

Welcome to the January 'Fanfare', as always we have tried to make the magazine as interesting as

possible including news from 2017 and outlining some plans and forthcoming events in 2018. The last

12 months were busy for the band with 90 rehearsals, 28 concerts, 5 contests, 4 CD recordings as well

as 27 youth training days.

As well as performing concerts in England, the band travelled to Ireland, Scotland, Denmark and the Isle

of Man. A large number of our concerts were self promoted events which included a mini-tour with the

fantastic vocalist Matthew Ford. We were busy in the recording studio producing a Christmas CD with

Matt Ford as well as undertaking recordings for our 'Heritage Project' (covered in this edition). In July,

the band recorded for the 'Area CD compilation' which contains the various test pieces that bands will

perform at the Regional Contests in February / March. The band continued to be successful on the

contest front where we retained our North West Area title, Won the Tameside Whit Friday march contest

for the 16th time in 17 years and were prize winners at the British Open and National finals. Our final

contest of the year was Brass in Concert held at the Sage in Gateshead where the band were placed 3rd

overall but were the highest placed UK band. In this contest, Foden's beat stiff opposition from a large

number of the UK's leading bands including Cory, Brighouse, Tredegar, Grimethorpe, Carlton Main and

Leyland.

In this edition of the Fanfare we provide updates on our 2016 'Heritage Funding' award as well as

announcing concert plans to commemorate the centenary since the passing of Edwin Firth. The band

were busy in 2017 with our educational outreach work and once again provide an overview of this and

work in the community.

Due to the economic climate, all brass bands are finding it difficult to generate income and secure paid

concert bookings. Foden’s are now promoting more of our own concerts and thank you for your

continued support of these events. Please encourage any friends to attend the concerts (and join our

Patrons society) as this income contributes enormously towards the high costs of running an

organisation like Foden's. We are always looking for any companies who may wish to sponsor events /

players and are presently looking for a sponsor for our fantastic Youth Band due to the withdrawal of

funding from their main provider (which covered the large running costs). If you have any contacts of

individuals / companies who may be interested in supporting us please let me know.

In relation to the legal structure of the organisation, we have now completed a lengthy and time

consuming process of transferring from being a ‘Charity’ to a ‘Limited Company with Charitable

status’. Over the past couple of years we have been successful in funding applications to various bodies,

these funding applications have allowed the band to carry our projects that we wouldn't have been able

to finance through our own funding. We have applied for further funding to carry out exciting and

innovative projects and will keep you informed how these go!

On behalf of all at Foden's I would like to thank you for your continued support of the band which is

greatly appreciated and look forward to seeing you at the annual Patron's Concert on

the 20th February (tickets enclosed).

Heritage Lottery

Award In 2016 Foden's announced that they had been successful in an application to the

'Heritage Lottery Fund' for a 'Heritage and Digital Project' with work commencing

in December '16 with a finished timeline of March '18.

The successful bid allowed the band to digitise all of our historical artefacts,

original 78's recordings (outside of copyright) as well as original manuscripts. It

also allowed Foden's to record two CD's of previously unrecorded / published music with all the digitised

information and recordings being housed on a new 'Heritage Website.' On top of this, training would

be provided for various members and volunteers in how do deal with historical documents and

digitisation.

Since last December a lot of work has

been on going behind the scenes so

that the project would be completed by

the March '18 deadline. I would

personally like to thank all those who

have been involved in the project,

especially Stewart Green as well

as Allan Littlemore who has donated a

large collection of his personal Foden's

memorabilia to our archives. I would

also like to thank Devmac Systems

(owned by Foden's cornet player Paul

McDonald) who have built a fantastic

'Heritage Web Site.' Foden's Band are

extremely proud of our history and the

new website allows us to share this

world wide as well as protecting it for

generations to come.'

Foden's will hold a 'Heritage' concert at Sandbach Town Hall on Tuesday 27th March commencing

at 7.30pm that will see the launch of the new 'Heritage Website.' The first half of the concert will see the

band perform music from original manuscripts with the second half being more recent concert material.

The concert is free to attend but due to limited space and availability tickets need to be applied for prior

to the concert.

Those interested in attending are asked to contact Mark at [email protected] or 07740 354106 to

reserve a seat.

Musical Director

Michael Fowles

Musical Director

Hello Friends!

I’m writing this following a year that contained some really excellent playing from the band. As usual we started

2017 with a performance of serious repertoire at the RNCM Brass Band Festival with myself and guest conductor

James Gourlay. The band responded to the difficult music brilliantly and gave a performance that received great

reviews from both audience and banding press alike.

Concerts the length and breadth of the country

continued with a similarly high level of playing

throughout the year but it was two concert

performances in Denmark that really stick out for me.

Played to very enthusiastic and knowledgeable

audiences we decided to perform the highly descriptive

test piece that had been set for the upcoming British

Open, Fraternity by Thierry Deleruyelle. A truly musical

test piece with a very high difficulty level was

rehearsed in a very short intense period of time,

something like 5 rehearsals, with our great players

responding brilliantly to give a really fantastic concert

performance.

Competitively the band played well throughout the year starting in February with the successful defence of the

North West Area title. Another victory was secured at the Tameside Whit Friday March contest in June before the

band then gave 2 outstanding performances at the British Open and National Finals under Bramwell Tovey both

of which were talked about by audience members as possible winners. The competitive year came to a close

with the band being ranked as the highest placed UK band at the Brass in Concert Championship.

Last year also featured two projects of a very different nature. In November the band collaborated with the

Science Department of Keele University to give a performance of Gustav Holst’s seminal work ‘The Planets’

complete with multi media presentations and mini user-friendly lectures on each Planet. A full house thoroughly

enjoyed this innovative way of presenting Holst’s fantastic music.

Also last year there was a continuation and development of our relationship with singer Matt Ford. He is

regarded as one of the finest jazz singers in the country and regularly performs with the John Wilson Orchestra,

BBC Big Band and Syd Lawrence Orchestra. Following the success of our concert at Clonter Opera Theatre in

December 2016 we recorded a Christmas CD together, a very strange feeling in April! This was released in

November at the first concert of our mini tour titled ‘Memories of Christmas’. The CD, which carries the same

name, has received fantastic reviews from the press and every concert finished with audiences smiling and

shouting for more – a great thing for any performer! It is often said that Brass Bands can’t swing but just listen

to the CD and I think we might change peoples minds! A big part of the success of the collaboration and indeed

the bands ability to play convincingly in that style lies in the musical arrangements. I want to take this

opportunity to acknowledge the considerable input into the project of our Chairman John Barber. He has written

all the new arrangements and as well as playing trombone he plays piano for some tracks to just as high a

standard. The band really is fortunate to have a musician with such ability and imagination in its ranks.

Looking ahead to this year talk of the John Wilson Orchestra reminds me that the band is undertaking another

really interesting CD project. The principal trumpet of the Orchestra is Mike Lovatt, widely regarded as the finest

lead trumpet player of today. He can be heard on countless film soundtracks, is regularly found as the lead

trumpet player of shows in the West End and is sought after for work all over the world. Last June the band

worked with Mike accompanying some solos in a concert and I’m delighted to announce that we will be

recording a CD together later this year so watch out for the release of what I’m sure will be something very

special indeed!

Youth Band Co-ordinator

Happy New Year and welcome to another round up of community and youth activities that the band

have been working on…

Sandbach Performances

As always, 2017 ended with the annual Christmas Concert - worth special mention this

year due to the extremely cold weather conditions which resulted in band members and

audience battling snow and ice to make it to a wonderful evening of festive music.

In 2018 we look forward to the annual events in the band calendar such as the patrons

concert in February, the transport parade in April, the summer concert with the Boys

school students and the Party in the Park in July. In addition, events linked to the band’s

heritage project will take place, beginning on 27th March where the new Heritage

website will be launched at Sandbach Town Hall in a free concert. Later in the year, two

concerts in June will see the anniversary of Edwin Firth’s death commemorated, much

more info to follow later in this Fanfare edition.

Foden’s Youth & Junior Bands

As ever, the Foden’s Youth and Junior Bands have continued to meet monthly providing

opportunities for young musicians to flourish under the guidance of our teams of

Foden’s conductors/tutors. In September the Youth Band began it’s 5th year since

formation with a weekend course featuring over 60 members. Later in the term, our

Youth Band and Junior Band joined together for a workshop day featuring masterclasses

on improvisation and performance

anxiety as well as an informal

concert.

In 2018 the Youth Band look

forward to a performance as guests

of the Greater Manchester Youth

Brass Band at Peel Hall Salford as

well as concerts at Clonter Opera

Theatre and the 3rd ‘Foden’s

Spectacular’ (alongside the Junior

and main Foden’s Band) at Parr

Hall Warrington.

Over the past 5 1/2 years we have

been very fortunate to receive

significant financial support from

Besson Instruments; this has

enabled us to cover the necessary costs such as sheet music, uniform, hire of facilities and equipment

etc. Sadly, due to the current economic climate, this financial support has ended. If anybody has any

connections that may be interested in supporting our youth initiatives, we would be very keen to hear

from you.

Information on any of Foden’s Youth initiatives can be accessed by dropping me an email at:

Foden’s Solo Contest Andy Rolfe — 3rd Cornet, Band Secretary

Sunday 29th of October saw Foden’s Band welcome over 100 entries from all over the world, to their 7th solo, duet & quartet competition. Once again the adjudicators had the difficult task of placing the competitors and providing them with constructive written feedback: Prof. John Wallace CBE, Dewi Griffiths & Brian Kingsley were this year’s adjudicators and were chosen for their experience, knowledge and reputation as fine musicians / educators.

Many of the entrants were familiar faces, some of whom have returned each year, though there were equally as many players entering for the first time. Many friendships have been forged between competitors over the years and the relaxed and friendly atmosphere has helped cement the competition as one of the largest of its kind.

13 classes of solos, duets and quartets meant that there were always 3 sections running simultaneously, with some players taking part in no less than 4 solo & ensemble classes.

The youngest competitor this year was only 5 years old: Archie Pannell impressed the adjudicator and audience with his confident performance of his slow melody, earning him not only the youngest player award, but also 3rd place against much older children. The video of Archie’s ‘repeat performance’ in front of an enchanted audience quickly went ‘viral’ on the internet!

The Open Solo class is the class that many enter, with the potential to win a unique and much sought-after Besson-sponsored prize. Previous winners have performed with River City Brass in the USA, had solos specially written by eminent composers and performed at the Festival of Brass at the RNCM. This year saw a previous winner regain his title against a very talented field of soloists: Paul Bennett competed in 4 sections, but still had the stamina & skill to perform the fiendishly difficult finale to Haydn’s Cello concerto. Paul impressed Prof Wallace with his virtuosity, tone & style to make him the first competitor to win this coveted prize for a 2nd time. Paul now has the opportunity to travel abroad again, courtesy of Besson Musical Instruments.

Next year’s date will be confirmed as soon as possible, and will be around the same time of year. Please email [email protected] for information.

Review:

Memories of Christmas Malcolm Wood - 4barsrest.com website

Those attending this concert who had perhaps already listened to the Brass Band World magazine’s December ‘CD of the Month’ came to Congleton in the heart of Cheshire with knowing smiles already on their faces.

And those that hadn’t, certainly left with them, as the intimate setting of Clonter Opera Theatre proved an ideal venue for this brass and voice combination that royally entertained them. The standing ovation at the end was such a well deserved response.

Matt Ford is regarded as one of the UKs finest big band singers; a classy stage presence blessed with a supple voice and stylish inflections. His long-standing friendship with Foden's trombonist John Barber has also opened up new musical pathways for both to explore - the result of which was a short Christmas Tour that has been a huge hit.

The collaboration (with John providing the imaginative arrangements) ensured that the singer’s voice was never submerged in the brass accompaniment (sensitively led by Michael Fowles), whilst Ford himself ensured that it was he who drove the musical narrative from start to finish.

No less than 17 of the items flowed seamlessly together, with John taking on the triple role as band player, soloist (with a lovely detour ‘In the Blue Midwinter’) and pianist and Ford, the master of ceremonies and spotlight crooner.

The genre classics of the festive season were delivered with a polished sensitivity from the upbeat to the suave, the reflective to the downright thumping. The soloist and band played off each other perfectly - the wit interspersing the music to keep the audience engaged and enthralled.

When people forgo the delights of a well stocked picnic hamper to sit back and listen instead of munch, then you know something well worthwhile is

catching their imagination. The leftovers at the end of the night would have filled many a ‘doggy-bag’.

The festive season may now be another year away, but if you get the chance make sure you book your ticket early not to miss them in 2018.

Player Focus

Darren Lea — Solo Cornet

This month we meet Cornet player Darren Lea…

Tell us a little about your background as a Musician.

I started out aged 7 with brass and percussion lessons at school, at the same time playing in my local Salvation Army YP Band.

My first contesting experience was actually on percussion, playing with the then Coventry School of Music Brass Band. I had given up playing my cornet for a couple of years whilst at senior school in favour of percussion, that is until I grew tired of karting my drums around from gig to gig, the cornet is much easier to transport!

I am from a brass banding family and when my Dad started to conduct the then Rolls-Royce (Coventry) Band (now known as Jaguar Land Rover, responded to his call for help as he needed a front row cornet player to play at an upcoming contest, I ended up staying in the Band moving onto the soprano cornet seat where I enjoyed a number of years.

I have had lots of musical opportunities during my career and have had the privilege of playing with a number of groups. I have helped out various bands throughout the UK and enjoyed playing with my friends at the Brass Band of Central Florida, USA on a number of occasions.

How did you come to join Foden's?

After depping with the Band, Mark Wilkinson offered me a position on the front row in late 2016. I joined the Band after competing at the Area contest with my former band (JLR) in March 2017.

What is your favourite part of playing for Foden's Band?

The Band is full of incredibly talented musicians, each performance is different and the demands are high. It is a pleasure to play my part towards performances and the success of the Band. There is a great atmosphere and dynamic in the band room.

What have been the highlights of your musical career so far?

I have been fortunate to enjoy winning a number of competitions and competed at a lot of the most prestigious contests. It is difficult to pick one highlight, winning the National Finals, competing at the Open, Nationals, US Open and NABBA are all highlights. I continue to enjoy making good music whether it is at a competition, concert or recording.

One memorable highlight for me was to play the Last Post solo section during a performance of the work by Karl Jenkins, ‘The Armed Man’ to a packed Coventry Cathedral as part of the Armistice weekend. The meaning behind the work, the venue, the history of the blitz and its devastation to my hometown of Coventry made it an honour and a privilege. A memory that will stay with me forever.

What do you enjoy doing when you have time off work and band?

Having three kids, Dad’s taxi is in high demand. I like to chill out and spend time with them as much as I possibly can. I am a sports fan as well as a long suffering Coventry City FC supporter.

Arthur Stubbs

During his time with the Foden Motor Works Band Arthur Stubbs lived at George Street in Elworth having joined the band as their 2nd Cornet player at a time when various members of the band had been removed from the line-up after a strike in the spring of 1915. It was at a time during the Great War (WW1) when the factory was increasing its workload to fulfil Government contracts including the making of ammunition and equipment for “the front” which left the workers with very few rights, bad conditions and little pay. Joe Brookes (Soprano), Percy Shaw (Euphonium), George Hinkinson (Trombone), John Heywood (Baritone) and Harry Cornack (Baritone) were among the players who decided to move to other bands at this time rather than continue to work at the factory as well as combining their band engagements.

These retirements left positions available to be filled by outsiders including C Smith on Soprano Cornet and Arthur Stubbs on cornet.

By September 1915, British Open Championships, Arthur Stubbs was playing 2nd Cornet at Belle Vue, Manchester with the test piece “Il Furioso” by Donizetti arr C Godfrey. Conductor for Foden’s was the great William Halliwell who took the band to first place.

By September 1916, Arthur Stubbs had replaced C Smith on Soprano. This change of seating within Fodens led to the article in an August 1917, Sandbach Chronicle where they described Arthur thus “Foden’s are a galaxy of stars, that there is one in particular that we must all listen to, and that is the soprano player. The greatest soprano up-to-date. No one knows what thirty years hen might bring along, but in Mr Stubbs I believe we have it.” If this was just publicity, or the opinion of that night’s performance by the Sandbach Chronicle reporter, we will never know but he certainly didn’t keep up the reputation over the next few years as he was moved from one instrument to another by various conductors. The reason for the article was the popularity of the band as a fundraiser for the war effort and after an article in Brass Band News.

“And now about that treat I promised. Foden’s are coming. Yes, they are. And bringing a couple of programmes with them. The place that has the honour of receiving this famous organisation has been altered from the Manchester Racecourse to the Manchester United Football Ground. The reason for the change I have been told is that there has been such a rush for tickets that it was feared that the racecourse would not hold the tremendous crowd expected. Now I am given to understand that “United’s” ground is capable of holding millions, and it was thought that in the interest of humanity it would be better to have the concerts on the football ground.”

For the 1918 Competition, Conductor Tom Haynes decided to move Arthur Stubbs back to Second Cornet and replaced him with Charlie Dawson who would stay in that role until 1923. On the 1 December 1924, Tom Haynes was replaced by Fred Mortimer, Fred decided to have another change of personnel and Arthur Stubbs was moved to Repiano Cornet with George Clarke (11 Sept 1923 to 28 Dec 1928) on Soprano for the 1926 Belle Vue Competition when they played “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” by Dr Thomas Keighley, with the band coming first. After this win on the 7 October 1926, Arthur Stubbs officially left the band.

Nearly a year later (5 September 1927) the competition for the Jennison Trophy at Belle Vue listed among the members of the Foden’s Band was Arthur Stubbs who was again playing on Soprano Cornet, this time possibly as a deputy player brought in for the event only. With Arthur on Soprano the band produced a win for the second year in a row, playing the test piece “Merry Wives of Windsor” by Dr Thomas Keighley.

This was possibly not the end of Arthur Stubbs on Soprano as for the 3 September 1928 British Open Championship at Belle Vue, Manchester he was listed as 2nd Soprano Cornet alongside George Clark and possibly the greatest line-up of musicians the band has known. William Halliwell making his last appearance with the band, Harry Mortimer on Solo Cornet alongside Charles Dawson, with Reg Moores and Fred Mortimer (Harry’s Father and usual conductor of the band) on Repiano Cornets and 1st Euphonium player Alex Mortimer with his brother Rex Mortimer on Trombone. This highlight was possibly the last appearance of Arthur Stubbs with the band as there are no more records of him playing with Foden’s or any other band.

Edwin Firth Commemoration Concert

Edwin Firth was born at Skipton on 23rd December 1888 into a banding family. His grandfather, Greenwood Firth, had been solo trombone with Black Dyke for twenty-five years, while his father Squire Firth had been a cornet player with the same band.

It was hardly surprising that Edwin learned to play the cornet as a lad, and in 1899 joined the Skipton Band. By 1902, at the age of thirteen he was Principal Cornet with the Band when they played at the famous Crystal Palace contest. As something of a 'boy wonder', Edwin received many invitations to appear as a guest soloist, and was able to use the money to pay for private tuition from William Rimmer and Alexander Owen, the greatest teachers of their day. Due to his playing standard Edwin was offered the Principal Cornet position at Foden's aged 20 in 1908.

The Great War was well into it's third year when Edwin decided, quite voluntarily, that he should fight for his King and Country. So in 1917 he became Private Edwin Firth of the 28th London Regiment (The Artists' Rifles). In February 1918 Edwin's Regiment was posted out to France, where he naturally took with him a cornet. Sadly on the 1st June 1918 Edwin was killed aged 29.

To mark his death Foden's will hold commemoration concerts on the 1st and 3rd June 2018 in Sandbach. As part of a successful ACE application Foden's have commissioned Andy Scott (the bands composer in residence) to write a work to commemorate his life which will be premiered at these events. As well as the concerts there will also be an exhibition of Edwin's possessions (including his cornet) prior to the concert.

Ticket numbers are restricted and available via www.priorbooking.com or [email protected]

Obituary - David Lewsley

I was saddened to hear that David Lewsley had died on the 18th of September 2017 aged 77. He joined and was with Foden’s Band from 1956 to 1967. He first came on cornet working his way from the back row to 4th man down. As I remember, when I first came I played fifth man sitting next to him, he had tremendous stamina and could certainly stay the distance, this is important on the front row and a bit like being at the coal face. In 1963 he moved to the horn section soon being promoted to Solo Horn. His first major contest on solo horn was the 1964 Open, Lorenzo by Dr Thomas Keighley was the test piece. In this is a demanding part for horn, the slow movement begins with a horn solo, David handled this with ease and we won the day. In the summer of ‘61 I had the privilege of rooming with him in Canada, this engagement at the Canadian National Exhibition with the M-O-B lasted nearly a month, fantastic times, we had much fun. I remember taking photos (with his camera) of him standing with a Mounty and his horse. On the 18th of October I attended his memorial service at St Laurence church in Biddulph, representing Foden’s Band. This church has a fantastic acoustic, we entered the church to the Hymn to Barossa by Andy Scott. What followed was a celebration for the life of David Lewsley, a fine man.

Rest in peace Dave. Thanks for being a good friend. Jimmie Charles.

Competition Success

On Sunday 19th November Foden's competed at the 'Brass in Concert' entertainment contest at the Sage,

Gateshead

'Brass in Concert' is regarded as the leading

brass band entertainment contest in the

worldwide banding calendar due to the quality of

the bands invited to compete. As well as

featuring the leading bands from the UK this

years line up also included bands from France,

Norway and America.

Foden's engaged the services of Dr Robert

Childs who has an excellent record at this

contest previously winning with Cory and

Grimethorpe. As well as conducting the band,

Robert was also heavily involved in the choice of

music which involved three new compositions

and three new arrangements. The music chosen

enabled the band to perform a themed

programme entitled 'A Celebration of Youth' to

celebrate the work that Foden's undertake in

this important field.

As always Michael Fowles did a fantastic job preparing the band ahead of Dr Child's arrival.

Despite not winning the contest the band were pleased with their consistent results in the performance,

entertainment and programme categories from all the various adjudicators which resulted in Foden's being

placed 3rd. This position resulted in the band being the highest placed UK band being beaten by two of our

overseas friends.

Foden's would like to congratulate our star euphonium player Gary Curtin

on being awarded the ‘best soloist of the day’ and also David Childs and

Prima Vista for commissioning the composers and arrangers to write for

the band especially for this event.

Full results were as follows...

Band Manager & Principal Cornet

2018 is once again looking to be a busy and musically rewarding year for the band.

February once again sees the band travel to Armagh as well as our annual Patrons concert. Following the success of last years event we been booked by BBC Radio 2 to perform at the 'Young Brass Award' where we will accompany 8 shortlisted soloists in a closed recording session at Media City. Foden's will then perform in the final at the RNCM where we will accompany 4 soloist in April with the concert being broadcast live on Radio 2. At the end of February we will compete at the North West Area Contest (the qualifying event for the National Finals to be held at the Royal Albert Hall in October) under the direction of Dr Nicholas Childs.

August sees the band return to Gawsworth Hall with the fantastic Matt Ford. Pre-orders for this concert can be taken by sending a SAE to Mark Wilkinson with cheques payable to Foden's Band for £15 per ticket (this also allows access to the grounds from 2pm). Please order early as we only have a limited supply of discounted tickets. Tickets for this concert will be posted in June (when received from Gawsworth)

Concert appearances after August will be included in your Summer 'Foden's Fanfare'
