Cats Protection Haslemere Hi I’m Roxy. I have now been in care for over 100 days. I’m looking for some nice people to brush my beautiful long fur, and let me sit on their laps. Unfortunately I didn’t cope well living with children, and I bit them. I would need to be the only pet, as I don’t like other cats, or dogs either. Laps though, I love those. Do you have a quiet household with a safe garden? Please get in touch with Cats Protection so that I can try out your lap.

Over 100 pieces of art to go on show at ‘Art & Soul 2017’ in Haslemere in June Local artist, David Paynter, who operates under the banner of The Artful Gallery, is hosting 22 award-winning artists at his studio and six acres of grounds in Haslemere in June. Over 100 works will be on show, including paintings, drawings, ceramics, glass, and a sculpture trail around the beautiful gardens and woodland of his ‘Huf’ house on Marley Common.

This is the sixth year David has staged the exhibition, in conjunction with Surrey Artists Open Studios. He commented:

‘Every year, we try to find something new and exciting for our hundreds of regular visitors, and this year is no exception. I have chosen an eclectic mix of painters and sculptors, all highly respected in their fields. I am excited by the prospect of designing a show that will please the eye and the soul (and, possibly, the purse!).’

David is a poet as well as an artist. His sculptural work is eclectic, from semi-abstract human figures to animals and abstract forms - often in stone, but also clay, cast into bronze or resin. Many of his pieces are accompanied by a poem, adding another dimension to the work. Two of David’s sculptures, with their poems, have pride of place at Farnham Road Mental Health hospital in Guildford. David also produces spontaneous, vibrant life drawings.

Among the painters featured is Haslemere’s own Roger Dellar, whose street scenes and landscapes have won numerous awards and are highly sought-after. Contrasting in style is Jacqui Shipp, whose large collages are master works of detail and totally absorbing. Vibrant colours and free brushstrokes define multi-award winner, Hashim Akib’s work, while Maureen Banfield Hamlin’s semi-abstract nature studies draw in the viewer. Andrew Lievesley loves the Scottish landscape and paints it with obvious energy and passion. Susie Lidstone’s floral paintings are so full of colour and life, one can almost catch the scent. Jean Haines is a modern watercolourist whose work and teaching takes her all over the world. Andrea Abraham has become famous for her animal portraits and is in constant demand by pet owners far and wide as she captures the personality and spirit of her subjects so faithfully.

The sweeping lawns and the woodland walk around David’s house will feature sculptures in a variety of materials from the rusted metal 2D animal and plant forms created by Simon Hempsell, to the bronze resin figures of Judy Cropper and the wood carving of Roger Day. The humorous ceramic totem poles by Katie Netley look over the semi-abstract, atmospheric figures of Katerina Porter. Margaret Samuel’s captivating dog sculptures will raise a smile.

Smaller indoor work for the home will be found in the studio, where Terri Smart’s popular ceramic pieces will

sit alongside small semi-abstract bronze ballet dancers by Hazel Reeves (famous for her massive Sir Nigel Gresley bronze at King’s Cross Station) and some of Moira Purver’s poignant figurative pieces.

Back in the garden, among the grasses and perennial flower beds will be found Amanda Noble’s coloured glass panels, Jonathan Hateley’s beautifully hand-painted bronze resin figures and Allan Mackenzie’s large seed head forms in copper. Carole Andrews’ abstract nature shapes in a mix of unusual materials will make a bold statement, as will Eric Duggan’s Massive leaf in bronze resin. His fish sculptures will sit beside the koi pond.

The ‘Art & Soul’ exhibition is open to the public from 11am until 5pm, free of charge, on the following days in June:

Saturday 3rd, Sunday 4th, Friday 9th, Saturday 10th, Sunday 11th, Friday 16th, Saturday 17th, Sunday 18th

Probate

Probate is defi ned as the court process by which a Will is proved valid or invalid. When most people use the

word ‘probate’ they mean the whole process of discovering the value of someone’s assets, going through the legal process of gaining authority to deal with it, paying off any debts and fi nally distributi ng the remainder to the benefi ciaries.

If a person has died leaving a Will and assets of more than £20,000, then the Executors of the Will are usually required to apply for a Grant of Probate to administer the estate. If no Will was made, then the deceased is said to have died Intestate and an Administrator will need to undertake the role of fi nalising the deceased’s aff airs. The Administrator has to apply for a Grant of Lett ers of Administrati on. In such a case, the rules of intestacy will apply and the deceased’s estate must be distributed in accordance with those rules. In either case the current Court fee for a Grant of Representati on is £155 if you apply through a Solicitor or £215 for a personal applicati on.

Consultati on

Following ‘Consultati on’ last year the Government announced that Probate fees in England and Wales would change from the current fl at rate fee to a banded rate where fees increase according to the value of the estate. This was despite the fact that the proposals during the Consultati on process att racted overwhelming oppositi on.

For estates valued at more than £300,000 (currently one estate in ten) the new fee was set at £1000. Over £500,000 and the fee went upto £4,000, over £1m and the fee rose to £8,000 and for estates over £2m the fee totalled £20,000.

New Fees Abandoned

Although the March Budget confi rmed that the new fees would come into force in May 2017 the Ministry of Justi ce has now announced that the statutory instrument on the proposed revisions will not have ti me to complete its passage through Parliament. The abandoned reforms were earmarked to raise around £250million per annum for the Treasury and would ‘reduce the burden on the taxpayer of running Courts and Tribunals’. It is perhaps unsurprising therefore that in some quarters this abandoned fee was being called a tax. What is unclear at this stage is whether these proposals will be revived aft er the General Electi on, however in view of the revenue the fees could generate, the new fee structure should not be ruled out in the future.

The abandoned proposals would have aff ected thousands of joint homeowners who hold their properti es as tenants in common. Property owned as tenants in common passes through a Will, not merely by survivorship to the remaining owner(s) and subsequently increases the value of an estate on death. Although this problem has gone away for now it has highlighted the need for your Will to be reviewed at regular intervals to ensure you have taken the most uptodate advice available and your assets are administered as effi ciently as possible.

‘If you would like any advice about wills, fees, Inheritance Tax or probate then please contact Christi ne Hanson on 01428 722189.’

Do you suff er with shoulder pain?Rotator cuff injuries are the most common cause of shoulder pain in the UK. The cuff consists of four muscles and their tendons. Together, they work to allow shoulder movement and stabilise the joint.

MechanicsThe shoulder is technically a ball and socket joint where the top of the humerus(upper arm bone) moves on a small fl at surface on the side of the shoulder blade (scapula). There is a small space above the top of the humerus called the subacromial space where most problems can occur and some of the tendons pass through this space. Also located within this space is a ti ny fl uid fi lled sac called a bursa which is designed to cushion the tendons as they pass through. Any damage to the cuff muscles, the bursa or

tendons can cause this space to become infl amed and/or restricted.

Types of injuryThe main conditi ons that aff ect the rotator cuff are tendinopathy and tears. The tendon may become acutely infl amed and this may be a reacti on to an overload or there may be some degenerati on that can occurred within the substance of the tendon. Tears are usually a result of trauma or wear and tear over ti me.

Symptoms and treatmentsThe symptoms with rotator cuff injuries will vary. Oft en people will experience pain in the shoulder area and this may radiate down the arm. This is oft en reproduced when lift ing the arm. Someti mes the arm can be painful at night especially when lying on the aff ected side. There may also be a restricti on getti ng the arm behind the back. The pain can be quite debilitati ng and aff ect peoples lifestyles and sporti ng acti viti es.

If you suspect you have a rotator cuff problem then your GP will be able to assess and refer you for treatment. Someti mes an MRI or ultrasound scan may help to diagnose the problem.

There are numerous treatments to help alleviate the pain from a rotator cuff injury. These may include rest, exercises and physical therapy treatments. Physiotherapy interventi on may include massage, site specifi c mobilisati ons for the tendon, exercises and posture re-educati on.

At Healthfl ex we have an experienced team of physiotherapists that will be able to help look aft er your shoulder injuries. For further informati on please contact the team on 01428 642577.

Sweet Potato Gnocchi with Sage Cashew Sauce

16

A beautiful combination of flavours, colours and textures. This dish is so pleasing to the eye not to mention the taste buds. A winning treat for any dinner party or romantic meal.

Method: Gnocchi

1. Bake the sweet potatoes in their skins until tender (approx 1 hour).

2. Once cooked, remove the skins with a knife and then crush them to ensure there are no lumps (or use a potato ricer).

3. Add the flour and mix thoroughly with your hands.

4. Add the remaining ingredients (Make sure there is enough salt or it can taste too bland. Taste the mixture as you go) and then form into a dough that can be easily shaped. If it is too sticky then add more flour bit by bit.

5. On a floured surface, roll the dough into long sausages.

6. Cut each gnocchi with a sharp knife into thumb nail long lengths.

7. You can shape each individual gnocchi using a gnocchi board or by using a fork.

8. Bring a large pan of salted water to the boil and lower the gnocchi into the water. When the gnocchi is ready, it will float to the surface. With a slotted spoon, scoop

Ingredients:Gnocchi

• 500g sweet potatoes

• 130g grade 00 flour or plain flour

• 2 tsp chives (finely chopped - use scissors)

• 2 tsp dill (finely chopped - use scissors)

• ¼ tsp nutmeg (grated fresh)

• Pinch of black pepper

• Salt

Cashew Cream Sauce

• 130g/1 cup raw cashews (unsalted and unroasted and preferably whole, not pieces) - soaked in a bowl of cold water and covered - for at least 2 hours but up to 8. Doing it overnight is the easiest way!

• 120-180ml/½-¾ cup water

• Fine salt to taste - just a pinch. Add gradually, mix in thoroughly after each addition and remember that sea salt is stronger than regular

• 2 tbsp white wine

• 10 fresh sage leaves

• 1 tsp stock powder

• 1 tbsp nutritional yeast

Salad/Garnish

• Handful of cherry tomatoes (halved)

• Handful of samphire

• Vegan parmesan e.g. Violife Prosociano or VBitey hard style Italian

• Watercress to dress

• Edible flowers (optional)

them out one by one as they float to the surface of the water.

9. Toss the gnocchi in a little olive oil and salt.

Cashew Cream

1. Soak the cashews (for a minimum of 2 hours or overnight).

2. Put all ingredients into a blender and blend until really smooth, adding water a little at a time. The more you add the thinner the cream will be - although the cream will thicken when left to stand in its container. Keep blending and scraping down the sides until the mixture is very smooth and creamy and has lost its grainy texture.

3. Transfer the mixture to a medium sized pan and bring to the boil and then simmer until heated through (approx 5-10 minutes). Add more stock/fluid if necessary/to taste.

Salad/Garnish

1. Halve the cherry tomatoes and fry in a little oil for 3-4 minutes.

2. Steam the samphire for 3-4 minutes.

Rising Star to Perform MendelssohnJoo-Yeon Sir

One of classical music’s rising stars is to perform the Mendelssohn Violin Concerto in Grayshott in June. Korean-born British violinist Joo Yeon Sir is the winner of the prestigious Arts Club Karl Jenkins Classic FM Award and is making a welcome return to St Luke’s Church, Grayshott on Friday 23 June 2017. Joo Yeon has performed at Royal Albert Hall with Royal Philharmonic Orchestra under Sir Karl Jenkins, the Royal Festival Hall, Wigmore Hall, Manchester Bridgewater Hall and at St James’s Palace in the presence of HRH The Prince of Wales.

The much-loved Mendelssohn Concerto has not been performed in Grayshott for over 10 years and is likely to attract a sell-out audience. Accompanied by the famous London Mozart Players, the performance will be conducted by another rising star, the energetic and charismatic young Hong Kong born Elim Chan, making her first visit to Grayshott. Elim became the first female winner of the Donatella Flick Conducting Competition in December 2014 as a result of which she held the position of Assistant Conductor of the London Symphony Orchestra in 2015/16.

“This is a great treat for music lovers,” says artistic director, Vivien Harrison, “this most popular of concertos will be played by such an exciting young violinist, conducted by another accomplished young star and accompanied by top international orchestra, the London Mozart Players. And the programme includes Mozart’s best-known Symphony No.40. What more could concertgoers want!” Joo Yeon last delighted Grayshott audiences in 2015 when she performed, live, the world premiere of a work written specially for her by Grayshott’s Patron, Sir Karl Jenkins. This work then became the central theme of Sir Karl’s dramatic choral work, ‘Cantata Memoria’ commemorating the Aberfan Disaster, performed live to a capacity audience of 2,500, with Joo Yeon at the Wales Millennium Centre last year.

“It’s wonderful to be coming to Grayshott again,” says Joo Yeon, “and this time I’m hoping to perform an extra surprise item which really shows off my violin’s great versatility!”

Community concert promoters, Grayshott Concerts, have an enviable record of staging sell-out

performances featuring well-known classical works performed by top-flight soloists with internationally renowned orchestras. In September, the venue will play host to one of the most celebrated cellists throughout the world, Raphael Wallfisch, who is to perform the evocative Schumann Cello Concerto with London Mozart Players, who will also perform Mozart’s Symphony No.40, possibly his most popular symphony. In November, Grayshott will welcome ‘The Sixteen’ one of the best known ‘A Cappella’ groups in the world.

Members of Grayshott Concerts, known as ‘Friends’, can book on-line at any time at www.grayshottconcerts.co.uk and are entitled to priority booking. General booking opens seven weeks before each concert. For more information, ring 01428 606666.

If you were aged over 55 on 6th April 2015 you can take advantage of the increased flexibility but obtaining professional advice is essential to make sure you get an informed analysis of your particular situation.

This is a case study of a client who approached Graham last year:

Our client received a pile of pension paperwork which made little sense to him. Following a review we discovered he actually had four pensions and each different pension provider needed him to make a decision on taking benefits. Our client found this all very confusing and needed help sorting it all out.

After our initial meeting, we worked out some potential options taking into account his circumstances and objectives. The providers were asked to clarify the

benefit details and available options. The client was surprised at the flexibility afforded to him having taken into account the pension rule changes from 2014 and 2015. He did not realise that he could only take the benefit of one of his pensions as a tax freelump sum. This fund was not accruing any further benefit, interest or growth and was being eroded by inflation. Having sought advice our client was then able to use the new rules to his advantage. It enabled him to increase his existing income as and when needed rather than the restrictive benefits being imposed upon him by his previous scheme.

The new pension rules provide much wider choice for those building up their pension funds and considering what to do with their retirement planning.

• Auto Enrolment and Tax Planning advice are not regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority

• A pension is a long term investment. The fund value may fluctuate and can go down. Your eventual income may depend upon the size of the fund at retirement, future interest rates and legislation.

Have you ever looked at all the applicati ons available on your

Apple computer at the moment?

Many people don’t do this and never know what their computer is able to do.

For instance, did you know that from your Contacts, you can

produce a mailing list for Christmas cards or any other home mailings you need to do? Formatt ed to standard pre-cut label sizes and ready to print. A favourite of mine, Automator will automate many repeti ti ve acti ons you have to do, either with its built-in scripts or you can create your very own processes within this app.

Take a look at your Printer or Scanner’s installed software, to help maintain your printer – keeping it’s inks working or printheads clean. It’s worth learning how to use your scanner, whether it is within an all-in-one device, a separate unit or on your mobile, you never know when it will be useful.

Your Mac even has it’s own Dicti onary with each language you use, a Thesaurus, Apple and Wikipedia content are at your fi ngerti ps. If you do a lot of word processing/publishing, FontBook is an invaluable tool to manage typefaces on your system. Learn how to turn sets of font on/off and keep your Mac running faster. It is advisable to download a second, alternati ve Web browser, i.e. Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox, etc. So that you will have a back-up browsers to download Safari again if your Apple system gets corrupted.

iMovie and iDVD are fantasti c tools which help you produce television quality fi lms on DVD with menuing just like the ones you fi nd in the shops, assuming your cameraman skills are up to it! Your soundtrack can be supplied straight from iTunes or you could even create your own sound in GarageBand.

So, next ti me you open your Mac, take some ti me to have a look around. You may be surprised at what is sitti ng there waiti ng to help you!

If you have questi ons about anything discussed here or questi ons about buying Apple computer equipment, I would be happy to help you with this. Call me on 01420 538575 or email [email protected] for advice planning your system or your best course of acti on.

Raystede Centre for Animal Welfare

Whatever the reason for giving up a pet, and there are many. Raystede is here to help.

Pets end up at Raystede for many reasons…

When relati onships breakdown, a once happy, sett led life can quickly become disrupted; perhaps an owner is forced to move house and with fewer people responsible for the pet’s

care, fi nances fl uctuati ng and in many cases a lot less ti me available. Someti mes, parti ng with the animal is necessary and we always suggest owners act in their pet’s best interests.

We also frequently hear of owners being forced to part with their pets when moving into rented accommodati on. Sadly, many landlords and letti ng agents do not allow pets in their properti es; with no other opti on for somewhere to live, the animal must be bought to a centre such as Raystede.

A large proporti on of dogs also come to Raystede via the local authority dog wardens. Dog wardens take ownership of stray and abandoned dogs aft er 7

days of the animal being found if an owner does not come forward. Raystede is keen to help as many of these homeless dogs as possible.

Less frequently, an animal’s behaviour, oft en just strength on the lead, too energeti c or incorrect training, is beyond the capabiliti es of the owner and the owner decides to surrender their animal. In these cases, Raystede endeavours to support the animal with correct training and fi nd a suitable home that is able to conti nue our work.

For small animals such as rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters and rats, the most common reason for surrendering is, sadly, a loss of interest by

children or simply being unwanted. Parents should not be ashamed about contacti ng us for help if this is the case; please consider

surrendering your pets if they are lacking in the care and att enti on they used to receive.

We will not judge an owner or make them feel embarrassed when they come to us. With the welfare of the animal our priority, we will do all we can to help. There has been a recent increase in owners adverti sing animals through Buy & Sell pages and social media, oft en ‘free to a good home.’ Choosing this opti on may seem like a quick and easy soluti on for desperate owners, but it is fraught with risks. For those selling pets online, there is no way they can guarantee the authenti city and intenti ons of the buyer. If their animal isn’t neutered, it could be used for breeding. The animal could become the victi m of dog fi ghti ng or abuse. It’s oft en unlikely that an owner can safely visit and check a potenti al home.

Giving your pet to Raystede bett er protects the safety and welfare of all the animals and people involved. Once in our care, owners can be reassured their pet is in good and caring hands.

Animals will receive a vet check and a behaviour assessment before we begin the process of fi nding them a loving, new, forever home.

Raystede is open to visitors 7 days a week 10am – 4pm (exc Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Years Day)

Headliners include leading comedians: Mike Gunn, Andrew Ryan, Matt Richardson, Stephen Grant and Jonny Awsum (who recently appeared to great

acclaim alongside Ant & Dec on Britain’s Got Talent) – to name just a few of the fiendishly funny leading stand-ups well known on the Comedy Club circuit and various TV and radio shows.

Tickets are strictly for comedy fans over 14yrs old - with the exception of the free Children’s Entertainment Event at Dylan’s Ice Cream Parlour on Wey Hill - and are available from Haslemere Hall

(01428 642161 or online at www.haslemerehall.co.uk) – or from the other six venues listed.

You then pick up your Comedy Festival wristbands, needed to gain entry to the venues, (but not the free session at Dylan’s), from the new Haslemere Hub next door to Haslemere Station on Saturday 8th July or on the Festival day itself – Sunday 9th July. This will get you into all the venues and the accompanying Comedy Festival Flyer means you can plan and choose where, when and who you want to watch throughout the Festival event.

Tickets are limited to just 650 in total for the entire event - so please plan your Comedy Festival journey around the venues in advance. Seats are on a first come, first served basis, so turn up early to enjoy 1,888 minutes of laugh-out-loud comedy on this fabulously funny day!
