I had the opportunity to attend the Conference on Worship, Theology, and the Arts. The theme, “Living Breath of God” informed all that we did together. In our worship and in our sessions, in rehearsals and in our small group gatherings, we considered how the Holy Spirit creates, provokes and empowers us in our lives of faith. The seminars I attended included “Working with the Developing Singer”, “Singing with Your Whole Self”, “Creating in the Spirit with InterPlay”, “Ethnic Percussion in the Church”, “Spirit in the Psalms”, and “Cultivating a Culture of Worship”. Some topics which I hope to reflect on as the months go by are: 1. Be

aware of “Habit Loops”, 2. Practice mindfulness, 3. God’s Spirit is never idle, 4. No doxology (“praise”) without lament, no lament without ending in doxology, and 5. Take journey from admiring Jesus to following Jesus. I also participated in the Treble Choir under the direction of Dr. Therees Tkach Hibbard. It is always beneficial to my faith and profession to have rich, quality experiences like this conference. The worship services were streamed and are archived online on St. Olaf website. Approximately one year ago Hosanna started the process of working with Vibrant Faith coach Tom Schwolert. Throughout this past year, meetings were held, goals were set, ideas brainstormed/implemented and evaluated. The graphics to the right share the two general goals that were established along with some of the outcomes and future work that needs to be accomplished as we continue to focus on these goals. The digital presence goal received the most initial attention due to the fact that there were some very concrete items that could be implemented. Some of the images below help share the focus on the second goal of building & enhancing relationships.

Above: Sermons are recorded and posted to Hosanna’s webpage each week. Below: Image displayed on monitor in gathering area on Sunday morning.

Help Harvest the Community Garden Hosanna’s community vegetable garden is growing well. There’s lots of harvesting work to do in August. Everyone is welcome to help with that. There are lots of green beans, tomatoes, peppers and squash to pick. All produce is shared with Channel One, and the families who come to our monthly Hosanna’s Pantry. Just stop by any time to work in the garden, and if you need help transporting the produce to Channel One, please contact Barb Anderson at,

[email protected], or 507-951-6848 or Nancy Wales, 507-285-0092.

Hosanna’s Pantry is 5 Years Old!

Since August 2013, Hosanna has served over 400 families each year who are in need of help with food. Over 100 people have volunteered a few hours at least one time during the last 5 years. Teens help and get service hours, grandchildren come with their grandparents and visiting family members come to help too. Please consider joining this wonderful family ministry and bring friends along to help with Hosanna’s Pantry during the summer months when the needs are greatest. We often have 50 – 80 families come during June, July and August. There are jobs for all ages (5 and older) to do. The pantry set up, unloading the Channel One food delivery and setting the food out on tables, is Friday morning, August 24, at 10:00 am. Or you can help greet families, shop with them, carry out groceries or clean up on Saturday, August 25, from 9:00—11:30 am. There’s a sign-up sheet at the Welcome Center or you may contact Barb Anderson at [email protected].

Hosanna’s Pantry 5 Year Celebration Lunch August 25 – 11:45 am (immediately after the pantry closes)

Anyone who has worked at the Pantry is welcome to come for lunch.

Sharing and Caring Food Pantry Hosanna’s own small food pantry is again in need of food. This is an ongoing ministry of our church, and we have families from the community coming in for help with food almost every day. Please consider bringing a bag of groceries to help keep our small food pantry well stocked. There’s a poster on the pantry listing the most needed items. Thanks for your ongoing generosity.

Susan’s Suppers Do you like to cook? Do you like to socialize? If the answer is “Yes” to both of these questions then Susan's Suppers is the ministry for you! We are in need of either groups, families or individuals to prepare meals in August. Recipes and instructions are located in the kitchen next to the Susan's Suppers freezer if needed. Please consider helping out. These meals help out congregation members as well as members of our community. The sign up sheet is in the gathering area. Questions call Sinde Finnegan at 507-254-2090 or email at [email protected].

Properties Update

Herald Volume 39 Issue 8

Property committee update:

The properties committee has been very busy this year. We thought an update is necessary to keep all church members informed on projects that are ongoing.

You may have noticed one of the large ash trees in front of the church was removed. It was severely damaged by wind during a recent storm. There was a crack through the entire trunk from the top all the way to the ground. We hired a tree service to remove the tree, remove the stump and two others with previous tree damage. The remaining ash tree was trimmed to get rid of all dead branches. The good news from this was to find out that the remaining ash tree is not infected by the ash borer. We have the option to treat this tree with insecticide to save it from demise by the borer. Please let us know if you have an opinion on doing this.

The committee also recently removed all low branches on the trees near the city street (flowering crabs, cherry tree and the two blue spruce trees by the front sign). We did this to clear the road and make it easier for the mowing crew.

You may have recently noticed a broken pane of glass in the east entry door. This has been measured, and a replacement should be installed soon.

Parking lot repair is also under way. Some progress has been made already. The west lower lot is sealed, and the cracks in the driveway have been sealed. The company will continue work this summer to remove the failing steps to the lower east lot and replacing with a side walk. We also have repairs scheduled for the walkway across the road from the entrance to the gathering area.

The water heater in the janitor room (Sunday school side) stopped working in the last month. It was 15 years old and needed replacement. Tonna replaced the unit the next day so were able to get hot water back within a day. They also made a small plumbing repair in a rest room. There seem to be many repairs this year. The committee could use additional help in getting these items finished. Many of the repairs require professionals to be called but there are some things we can do to save some money in our budget. The committee will start posting "help wanted" ads to the congregation when help is needed and hope to recruit help. Any effort is appreciated.

The fire inspection (smoke detectors, strobes and horns) has to be completed soon. We recently switched to a local company, Custom Alarm, to do this work.

Big jobs that need to get done include:

1) Paint gathering area, office spaces and conference room. 2) Replace all light bulbs in sanctuary to try to increase the brightness. 3) Replace counter tops in rest room vanities and replace faucets.

We have four active members on the committee: Leon Plantz, Dale Nelson, Shannon Gray and Guy Griesmann. If you are interested in joining and helping in some role please talk to one of us. Men and women are welcome. There are jobs for everyone and not all of them require doing heavy work.

During the summer, we have talked about bread.

August ‘s theme at Hosanna is Jesus: The bread of life. I remember that bread was one of the foods that was always on our table during our family meals. Who doesn’t enjoy the smell of freshly baked bread either in your home, your grandma’s home or the local bakery? I believe most of us have that entwined into our memory banks! Bread is one of our dietary staples and it is one of the things that we often crave and need in our lives.

Bread is also mentioned throughout the Bible. One particular verse from John 6: 35 Jesus replied, "I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry again. Whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.”

What this verse says to me is that just like bread being one of those essential things we need in our life, we also need and crave Jesus! He too, is essential in our lives! The Bible tells us that those who come to Him and follow and believe in Him will never be hungry or thirsty. Through Jesus’ death on the cross, we live. How often do we think about bread and how it is incorporated in the Bible or our daily lives? As we pray the Lord ’s Prayer, we say ‘give us this day, our daily bread’. We know the familiar Bible stories of Jesus: In the New Testament, bread is associated with miracles! Think of the feeding of the 5000 with the loaves of bread. During the Last Supper, Jesus held the bread, broke it and said, “This is my Body, given for you”! These are just two examples of Jesus and bread that are linked together.

I would like to thank everyone who has and will provide the bread during our summer services and

the meanings that are behind the special breads that were and will be eaten after the service. Also

thank you to all who provide bread for our communion services, which is given as the body of

Christ.

Jesus is the BREAD of LIFE!

God’s Blessings, Lisa

Pastor Meiers 40th Anniversary Celebration of Ordination

Dear Members and Friends of Hosanna,

Our worship theme for August, “Jesus Is the Bread of Life”, is expressed clearly in the order for Holy Communion: “When we break this bread”, is it not the sharing in the body of Christ? When we give thanks over the cup, is it not the sharing in the blood of Christ”? When the pastor breaks the bread in full view of the congregation, it is a stark reminder of Jesus offering himself to us for forgiveness and nourishment of our faith.

Jesus talks a lot about bread and specifically in the sixth chapter of John’s Gospel. Not only does he talk about it, he gives bread to the hungry. In the miracle of the feeding of the 5,000, Jesus responds to the hungry crowd by using the five barley loaves of bread and two fish a young boy brought with him when he joined the thousands who had come to hear Jesus speak. Like that young boy, God uses our resources, as a church, to provide for those who are hungry and in need here in 2018.

Jesus talks about bread for the empty stomach, but he goes on to speak of another hunger, a deeper one: the hunger of our spirit for a relationship with God. Both needs are a matter of survival for without physical bread (sustenance) our body fails, and without spiritual bread our faith life weakens. Jesus reaches out to the whole person, and that means food for the body and food for the soul, not one or the other.

The people whose stomachs were filled in the miraculous feeding by the Sea of Galilee were left hungering for more. They had questions. They wanted to know more about Jesus and his disciples. So they took boats across the sea in search of this Jesus who had fed them so that they ate until they were full and there were still leftovers. They wanted to know more about the teacher who provided in abundance to meet their needs.

They asked their questions of the miracle working Rabbi, and they got their answers. Jesus said, “I am the bread of life.” And he promised that whoever comes to him shall not hunger (John 6: 35).

This was good news of the thousands who sought Jesus out by the Sea of Galilee, and it is good news (gospel) for us as well.

Yours in Christ,

Pastor Bill Meiers
