Family of Adam Barger
and Lucinda Nolan
This record of the family of Adam BARGER, son and 8th child of Philip BARGHteEve CLEMENTS, of Blacksburg, Va., was nailed June 8, 1962, to the 42 addresses which are a part of this record.
No one hired me to undertake this project. It was started as a private hobby, because of a consuming interest in the development of my family line.
This is the 8th living family I have charted whose origin I have traced back to the children of Philip Barger=Eve Clements.
S:x of them, however, have been completed only in base copies, to be duplicated only by photocopy, for supplying to one or two members of an interested family.
Only two family lines have been published by mimeograph in order to be able to supply the completed report to every family charted whose address I have, and for filing with representative genealogical societies.
These Family Trees are presented in TIME SCAIE charts, a plan originated by me, which I have not found used in any other of many historical records which I have examined.
This TIME SCALE method is n*t copyrighted, and I am willing it be used by others without compensation to me.
It offers many advantages of clarity in presenting vital records of a family, and often becomes a valuable reference chart.
fort: G..JP. Ba-»3«>.|ylD.
As illustrated in this mimeographed"publication, JU1V i^M, it can be issued quite inexpensively. I
How inexpensive, I am showing you by listing below the items of expense in this.
Colored mimeograph paper, not counting spoilage 2219 sheets $6.60
Ink, three tubes 9.00 37 blotter folders for filing used stencils 1.10 37 stencils, not counting spoilage, G 15$ each ,-5»55 42 large envelops 1.00 1st class postage, 7 oz x 4$, 28$ each address 11.76
Total 35.01 Average cost per copy .85
not allowing for any spoilage, but allowing for 15 extra copies of full report to supply to any additional families if they turn up.
Please note that this record goes to 21 addresses in family and to 21 professional addresses.
I have not tried to solicit «rders in advance for this report, for that would delay publication too much.
But I do hope that the excellence of this report on your own family, will appeal to you enough, to make you want to contribute something toward the expense of publishing it, and for filing reference copies with genealogical

Notes on above from Fred Hugh Barger: Jan 30/61.
" 1150-3 Frances BARGER. I am sure she had three husbands, and the second, in Wisconsin, I think was named WATERMAN. The 3d, Henry ALLEN, did not die till after Sep.l3,19Q3, for I knew he made a lot of trouble in connection with my grandmother's estate after her death.
Frances was in Eldorado Springs, Mo., at the time of my Uncle John's death near Custer in 1914» I wired her and she came right out and got everything he had, mostly trouble; and lived in his old home in Bellingham till after 1919, when Uncle Will's first wife, Kate, died in Hebron, Nebr. Then Uncle Will sent *°r her snd- 'book care o f her til1 her death in Hebron, but she and Allen and my grandmother are all probably buried at Eldorado Springs.
John A BARGER moved to Whatcom, now Bellingham, Wash, before 1903, In 1906 he had a shingle mill there, where I, Fred Hugh BARGER, joined him for a few months, 1906 or 7.

Sources of these records: Barger Journal, 1939 edition, by A L BARGER, Mrs. Jesse Ware, Decatur, Til. Fred Hugh BARGER, Custer, Wash., living descendent.
In Sept. 1943, I attended a session of the National BARGER Association at Decatur, 111., initiated by Mrs. Jesse W. WARE.
At that time she loaned me quite a few pages of charts which she had gathered at annual sessions, and I had photostats made of them. Following her death in an aiito accident in 1953» all her extensive accumulation of records were burned.
Among her records preserved in my photostats, I found a legal sized page of records of the Adam BARGER family, , possibly supplied by descendents of the family living near Loami, H I . , home of Adam BARGER.
This record differed in but few points from the records of this family in Barger Journal, so it is likely that A. L, BARGER had been supplied with a similar copy by Mrs. WARE.
Loami, H I . , Sangamon Co., where Adam BARGER lived, adjoins the Illinois county of which Decatur is the county seat, so it is likely that some of Adam BARGER's descendants were members of this Association.
My photostat record of Adam BARGER is undated, but from the latest date, 1874, appearing in its records, may have been produced about 1874.
Blacksburg, Va., where Adam BARGER was born Apr. 8, 1784, was in Botetourt Co., (Now Montgomery Co., Va)
Moving in 1826 was not so easy as it would be today.
Kanawha County, W.Va., is the county seat of Charleston, in the center of the State, on the Kanawha Eiver.
Adam BARGER moved his family of 10 children and household goods by boat down the Kanawha to its mouth on the Ohio river, thence down the Ohio River to Shawneetown, H I . , on the Ohio River at the southern tip of Illinois.
From there, with his own farm wagon & two yoke of Oxen, and another hired team, he brought "his family & 2 loads of household goods to what was then called Yankee Settlement, now known as Loami township, Sangamon county, Illinois, in the central part of the State.
Adam BARGER and wife Lucinda NOLAN-BARGER both died at Loami.
In I960, Fred Hugh BARGER & wife, visiting in Loami, obtained a colored photo of Adam's tombstone in Sulphur Springs cemetery, Loami.
Of the 12 children of Adam & Lucinda BARGER all but two married.
Albartes BARGER,"their 1st child, had 13 children daughters Olivia & Harriet each had 9 children.
Adam BARGER lived to be 80, outliving his wife Lucinda. Zebulon, the 4th son, died at age" 29. Y^E^S James M. his 10th son, remained a bachelor. ( A L j )

Quote from Hebron, Nebr. Journal June 22, I960, "jym Cracks-' column, by J. V. *Jim* Johnson.
with column portrait, of F, H. Barger
A pleasant chat the other day with a former Hebron newspaper columnist who preceded us by some 60 years.
He is Fred H. Barger, 1903 Hebron High School Graduate, whose undergraduate literary efforts on behalf of a local poultry association appeared in the Hebron Journal around the turn of the century.
Now a resident of Custer, Washington, Mr. Barger has been a machinist and manufacturer and for the last 25 years a teacher of related skills along these lines.
We must confess, however, that a good deal of the aforementioned ''visiting'1' was conducted by Editor Will, who is much better qualified to discuss events of more than half a century ago, and the important people of that era --the I Jetheralds, Collinses, Fergusons, and many more.
The name ''Barger" should also be prominent on this Hst. chiefly because of Fred*s father, Winslow H. Barger, who gave his name to a street along which he owned considerable property.
The family residence, the "'Barger House"' at the northern extremity of Sixth Street, became in successive years the ''Cruise House"' and the -'Cloyd House*' and is now the Ace Hagen residence.
Hebron folks will perhaps better remember Mrs. Lucy Barger, a charming and wonderful lady who Hved a good many years at the corner of Sixth and Barger in the house now occupied by the Donald ?Pinky* Hartley family.
By the simple expedient of keeping stiH and listening we also learned that Hebron was bountifully supplied with newspapers as the 20th Century began.
There was of course the Hebron Journal, operated by E. E. CorreH, but in addition there was the "''Register'* printed by Conway Leedom, and the "Champion", pub. by one F.S.Mickey.
In the 1900*s the latter two were consolidated into the Register-Champion, and purchased in this form in 1924 by Will Long.
The final merger, leaving the paper in its present-day form took place in 1944, when Editor Will bought the Hebron Journal.
