SCHOOL WIDE GROUND COFFEE AND NEW SOCKS DRIVE FOR THE HOMELESS

February 27th – March 24th

Do you know that on any given night approximately 530 people are homeless in the City of Pasadena? That is more than all of the students and teachers at Saint Philip the Apostle School. Every night! Do you know that one out of five of these homeless are either families or unaccompanied children? That is over 100 homeless families or children. Every night! In Pasadena alone!

Remember how comforting your home is to you: your loving family, your warm bed. They are so familiar to you and so constant that you probably take them for granted. The homeless in your own city do not have these things.

Did you know that in 1973, a group of community volunteers opened Union Station as a simple hospitality center to serve poor and homeless men in downtown Pasadena? Just to provide the small kindness of good food and a cup of coffee. Since then, with the help of local churches like Saint Philip the Apostle, Union Station has grown, helping men, women and children rebuild their lives, and end homelessness. Union Station provides comfort, counseling, guidance, food, and supportive housing to those who are utterly bereft in our community.

Do you know that homeless can happen to anyone? Have you ever heard the expression, “There but for the grace of God go I?” Unexpected medical misfortune made one mother and her daughter homeless. They came to Union Station. “You think of a shelter as a cot on a cold floor, but coming to the Family Center was safe and comfortable. They fed us. They clothed us. They gave me everything I needed,” she said. “I was stressed more than I knew. Union Station allowed me to think clearly and make a plan for myself. It takes a lot of pressure off when you know you are safe and don’t have to worry about where to sleep or what to eat.” While at the Family Center, she received everything she needed to get back on her feet, including new clothes, diapers, food, case management, child care, and help finding an apartment. “They pushed me to be motivated,” she said. “With Union Station providing so many basic resources, it allowed me to save my money so I could move out.” In January, mother and daughter moved into their apartment.

You can help. Did you know that the top two items requested by the homeless are coffee and socks? Yes. It is true. Those two little things! Hot coffee and warm socks are very comforting, especially to those who have almost nothing. Please bring ground coffee and new socks to your classroom at Saint Philip the Apostle School, and the Third Grade will collect them and deliver them to the homeless at Union Station. It is a small thing that means so much to those who have so little and it brings Christ’s love and comfort to the homeless, who suffer greatly, alone and penniless.

“Not all of us can do great things. But we can do small things with great love.” – Saint (Mother) Theresa of Calcutta.

The Rosary and Our Blessed Mother

The Blessed Mother of Jesus is our Mother too. She is always there for us and wants to

pray with us for our special intentions. In her many appearances, she has asked Her

children to pray the rosary. The rosary draws us into a closer relationship with Jesus

through meditative prayers while reflecting on Jesus’s and Mary’s lives. These prayers

bear fruits in our own lives, such as: faith, hope, charity, patience, forgiveness and love.

Join us in praying the rosary to ask for Mary’s powerful intercession in everything, big or

small. Countless prayers have been answered, graces received and miracles attributed

to this simple prayer devotion. We have witnessed the incredible power of prayer in

the St. Philip Community and have so much to be thankful for.

Hope to see you on Mondays after school with your children at 2:10 and/or Thursday

mornings after drop off. Rosary guides are provided and extra rosaries are available.
