GROUP

What is Family Matters?

Family Matters – Strong communities. Strong culture. Stronger children. is Australia’s national campaign to ensure Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and young people grow up safe and cared for in family, community and culture. Family Matters aims to eliminate the overrepresentation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children in out-of-home care within a generation (2040). Family Matters is led by SNAICC – National Voice for our Children and supported by a Strategic Alliance of over 150 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and non-Indigenous organisations.

What is the Family Matters Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Leadership Group?

The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Leadership Group is comprised of approximately eight Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander leaders with the passion, expertise and determination to set campaign priorities and drive their implementation. Members of the leadership group act in a voluntary capacity and have the opportunity to affect real change to improve outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children.

Who we are looking for

We are looking for passionate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander leaders, including young and emerging leaders from across the country, with expertise across the areas necessary to run an effective campaign. This includes expertise in child safety, wellbeing and development, campaigning, media engagement, coalition building, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community engagement, policy development, advocacy and effecting systems change. Recognising that leadership exists at multiple levels and in different forms outside of an organisational context, members of the leadership group do not need to be chief executive officers or chairpersons of boards.

How you will be involved

As a member of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Leadership Group, you will have the opportunity to:

drive and make key decisions about the campaign’s priorities, strategy and workplan; contribute your expertise to advancing campaign goals; represent the Family Matters campaign publicly and advocate to advance its

priorities, including advocating for the implementation of the Family Matters Roadmap and the Family Matters Report recommendations;

meet quarterly each year (either in person or via teleconference); provide input to the campaign’s key documents, including the annual Family Matters

report; and chair one of the campaign’s Priority Working Groups depending on your availability.

Priority Working Groups are comprised of content experts responsible for implementing campaign goals and priorities. For example, one Priority Working Group may be responsible for driving the campaign’s policy priorities and another may be responsible for driving the campaign’s media and communications.

If you’re interested in joining the campaign’s leadership group to work towards improving outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children across Australia, please email me ([email protected]) and Nadeshda Jayakody ([email protected]).

When indicating your interest, please briefly outline why you would like to be a part of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Leadership Group and how you believe that your skills and expertise can help drive the campaign.

Submissions are required by Wednesday 30 January 2019.
