Top Tips For Better Bedtimes
Getting children into the routine of early bedtimes for school can be a nightmare for most parents. Here are some top tips to help you out:
As bedtime approaches, prepare your child’s body for rest by turning the lights down a little, discouraging stimulating activities such as TV, computers and loud music. You may like to burn some calming lavender. Try to encourage your child to enjoy calming activities such as reading stories, jigsaws and colouring rather than rough and tumble play. You may like to practise some relaxation exercises or simple yoga stretches.
* Establish a routine that your child becomes familiar with and knows he has to stick to no matter how much he resists – make a decision what time he goes to bed and stick to it. Let the routine include a lavender bath, a milky drink, brushing teeth, toilet, and a soothing bedtime story (you could try the beautiful Aladdin’s Magic Carpet by Relax Kids) and finishing off with a long cuddle and lots of reassuring words. Try to let this routine be as calm and gentle as possible.
If there is a deep resistance, have a chat with your child and find out if there is an underlying problem ‐ it maybe that she really has a fear of being alone, or is scared of the dark or feels lonely or feels that she is missing out. Talking about her fears and getting lots of attention, understanding and assurance from you will help immensely.
Stay as patient as you can and keep the atmosphere as positive as possible – children who feel they have upset their parents as well as facing the night alone, find it even more difficult to relax and sleep.
If you can, make bedtime a magical time, let her choose her favourite story and cuddle her favourite teddy. Sprinkle invisible fairy dust in the air or draw a circle of protection around them. Allow time for children to blow away their worries and fears.
A drop of lavender on a tissue near the pillow will help calm him down and be ready for a good nights sleep. A night light will bring a touch of magic to the room as well as alleviating any fears of being alone in the dark.
You may like to incorporate a little massage into their routine. This will deepen their feeling of security and feeling loved and cherished. Try stroking their face gently or softly circling the inside of their palm.
After their cuddle and kiss goodnight, develop a mantra such as goodnight, goodnight or sleep tight hope the bed bugs don’t bite. (for younger children). This mantra or repetitive saying will help your child settle.
After saying goodnight, be gentle but firm that the time for playing is over and its time to go and play or have an adventure in dreamland. Make sure your child feels he has had your undivided attention and feels totally loved and safe.
Dim the lights so she knows it really is time for bed ‐ you may like to play some soft calming music or pop on a relaxation CD. The Relax Kids CDs are being used by thousands of children throughout the UK and parents have found them invalu‐able for giving children a tranquil bedtime experience. Sweet dreams!

Autumn 2009 www.familylifemag.co.uk
Autumn 2009 www.familylifemag.co.uk
Babies are born with an instinctive ability to communicate – they cry, they look, and move their bodies.
Although they cannot speak at this early stage, they do have the ability to understand and use language, and with the right guidance have much to say with their hands!
Babies naturally already use a combination of sound and gestures as part of their normal development, and introducing them to signing will help them to communicate their emotions, needs and much more!
Using the original and hugely successful baby signing program – SIGN with your BABY® at Babies Can Sign™ we show how to add gestures, in the form of signs (British Sign Language signs‐BSL), to your speech when you talk to babies. This enables them to link the spoken word and its meaning with the appropriate sign thereby enabling you to communicate with each other.
There are many advantages of using BSL, mainly that you and the child are learning a recognised language therefore gaining an important life skill which can continue long after learning to talk. As opposed to using a made‐up or mixed‐up sign language, signs can also be recognised by others. There is a sign for everything and although the program is designed primarily for hearing babies and their parents or carers, classes are also accessible to those who are deaf or hearing impaired or who have other communication difficulties.
A good time to introduce signing is from six months onwards, as babies of this age have more control over their hand and eye co‐ordination, although you can sign with babies from much earlier.
The ability to speak doesn’t develop until 12‐18 months or even later but experience and twenty years of research tells us that babies can sign from as early as six months, although the majority of babies sign back on average between 10 and 13 months.
They can then tell you if they are hungry or thirsty or want to look at a book again. Also that they want more of something or want to sleep. They can even let you know when they are in pain – and where it hurts! Instead of just pointing and
gurgling they can tell you their early observations using signs, for example that they have seen a butterfly outside in the garden, and all this before they can talk! At this early age they can make signs to let you know what they are thinking which can be magical. This can reduce frustration for both babies and their parents or carers, when little ones cannot otherwise express their needs.
It gives you a window into their world and will also encourage and support a child’s language development by focusing on key words. Often some of the first words they say are ones they have signed.
As a signing mum myself I have seen the benefits and experienced the joys first hand with my own children .
Parents use ges‐tures of some kind with their baby or those in their care, during the first few months of life – waving goodbye, for ex‐ample – and taking the next step to baby signing will make all the difference. It’s great fun too!
At Babies Can Sign™ we use musical activities, story‐telling and play, to teach a range of signs that can be used with babies in their daily routines. Lots of puppets (including our resident ‘Signing Sam Puppet’) and props such as bubbles are used to help teach signs and add to the fun!
Classes and work‐shops are taught by qualified and experienced signers, many of whom are experienced teachers, who hold appropriate insurance and CRB Checks.
Classes are held regularly at Saltaire, Baildon and Bingley Methodist Churches as well as at Harden (new term starts at the beginning of September) FREE taster sessions also avail‐able to groups and childcare settings or if you have a special event e.g. fundraiser.

Pupils not only benefit from the potentially life‐saving ability to swim but vital exercise is also achieved. At any of the schools, there is only
ever a maximum class size of eight being taught in the pool at any one time. For children aged 6 months to 4 years class sizes never exceed 6. This reduces the risk of accident and ensures there are no distractions. It also gives adequate learning time to each pupil. £70 for 10 lessons
