The Class of 2015 celebrated their Prom on Thursday, June 4th at Maestro’s Caterers

in the Bronx. Students, including Prom King, Kavorn McKoy (extreme left) and Prom

Queen, Skylla McDowell, (extreme right) dined on a fantastic buffet of assorted

foods and danced to music played by DJ Iggy. The hall was decorated in shades of

blue and tan, to match the “Under the Sea” theme. It was a beautiful event cele-

brating the pending graduation of FLACS I’s fourth 8th grade graduation. (see

La clase del 2015 celebró su baile de graduación o Prom, el jueves 4 de junio en el

Salón Maestros en el Bronx. Los estudiantes que incluían al Rey del Prom Kavorn

McKoy (extremo izq.) y la Reina del Prom Skylla McDowell (extremo der.), disfruta-

ron de una excelente comida variada y bailaron a la música del DeeJay Iggy. El

salón fue decorado en tonos de azul y marrón claro complementando el lema

“Bajo el Mar.” El bello evento celebraba la cuarta graduación de 8vo grado de

We did it!!! FLACS I is the 2015 Co-Ed soccer middle school Cham-

pions for Region 1! This is the school’s second championship this

year, and our first soccer championship in school history. I am so

proud of all the students, it has truly been a special year, and a

memorable one for the students. They did an amazing job all year

and played exceptionally well on June 10th, winning with a score

of 2-1. A special thank you to the FLACS parents who were a

great support to our team. Thank you to all the staff members

who supported the students all year especially to Mr. González.

¡Lo logramos! ¡El equipo mixto de futbol de la escuela intermedia

FLACS I son los campeones de la Región 1! Este es el segundo

campeonato de este año y el primero por el juego de futbol

(soccer) en la historia de la escuela. Me siento muy orgulloso de

todos los estudiantes y que desempeñaron una labor estupenda

a través de todo el año y se destacaron el 10 de junio ganando 2

a 1. Se le extiende un agradecimiento especial a los padres de

FLACS por su gran apoyo a nuestro equipo. Gracias a todos los

empleados que apoyaron a nuestros estudiantes a través de

Our FLACS scholars worked extremely hard to make this year’s

FLACS Got Talent Show the best ever. Every year we are amazed

with all of the children who decide to come out of their comfort

zone and perform in front of hundreds of people and we are

grateful for all of the support. The children here at FLACS are so

talented. They sang, danced, acted and put on a great perfor-

mance! “Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind,

Nuestros estudiantes FLACS trabajaron extremadamente fuerte

para asegurar que el FLACS Got Talent Show de este año fuese

el mejor de todos. Cada año nos deleita ver el número de niños/

as que deciden atreverse a actuar frente a cientos de personas

y estamos muy agradecidos por el apoyo que el público nos

brinda. Los niños/as de FLACS son muy talentosos. ¡Ellos canta-

ron, bailaron, actuaron y rindieron una gran actuación! “La músi-

Inside Our Classrooms — Dentro de Nuestros Salones de Clase

The Tower Garden experiment, established with the collaboration of the Calhoun

School, has been a resounding suc-

cess. There are 3 different types of

lettuce growing (green leaf, star fight-

er and deer tongue) plus arugula and

cilantro. We have had two harvests

since the hydroponic towers were

installed in K012 and 502 a little over a

month ago. The students in each

class participate by trimming the

leaves from the plants. They have

learned how to carefully cut each leaf

while keeping the plant intact and

allowing for new growth. Both students

and teachers were amazed at the

difference in taste that freshly picked lettuce can have. Allison Beobide

El experimento del Jardín Torre, el cual fue establecido con la colaboración de la

Escuela Calhoun, ha sido un rotundo éxito. Estamos creciendo tres tipos de lechuga

mas arúgula y cilantro. Hemos tenido dos cosechas desde que se instalaron las torres

hidropónicas en el K012 y en el 502 hace menos de un mes. Los estudiantes en am-

bas clases participan en el recorte de las hojas, tarea que desempeñan cuidadosa-

mente para no marchitar las plantas y así permitirle una nueva cosecha. Tanto los

estudiantes como las maestras se sorprendieron de la diferencia en el sabor de le-

Principal’s Corner Esquina de la Principal Dear Families,

It has been an exciting and challenging first year

for me as the principal of Family Life Academy

Charter School I. I had the wonderful opportunity

to work with you and your children to provide a

productive and safe learning environment that

supports student success.

As the school year winds down, I wanted to thank

you on behalf of all the staff at FLACS I for your

support of our school, students and programs

throughout this school year. Thank you for under-

standing the value of your child’s education and

for staying involved in your child’s education and

school activities in spite of the challenges. Your

interest and concern in their school progress will

motivate them to do their best. Raising children

today is not an easy job. As your children grow,

you will see the benefits of your involvement. I also

encourage you to be an active participant in our

Parents Association.

On a separate note, summer is upon us and there

is no better time to begin thinking about and ex-

ploring Summer Reading Programs at our public

libraries. Reading during the summer is not only a

fun summer activity, but is a great way to ensure

your child will be ready for the new year in Septem-

ber! PLEASE ensure that they continue to hone

and practice those all-important reading skills daily

throughout the summer. Make this a must — a hab-

it — a mandatory time each day. This is the most

important skill your son and/or daughter will need

to master for an enjoyable and successful educa-

tion!!!

Students , enjoy your summer with your families. I

hope you have lots of time outside enjoying the

weather and activities. Remember to make read-

ing a part of your summer break. See you in the

fall!

Kindergarten in Action! — ¡El Kindergarten en Acción!

Science in 6th Grade! — ¡Ciencia en el 6to Grado!

In 6th grade, students explored cells of living organisms. To help students familiarize

themselves with the parts of a plant or animal cell, students created models of cells

using Arts & Crafts supplies as well as everyday household items. Students showed

their creativity and en-

joyed the hands-on ap-

proach to learning about

cell parts. To build excite-

ment, students voted for

the most creative, most

attractive and most dis-

gusting models of cells.

After the cell project,

students related what

they learned about cells

to current events topics

regarding the emergence

of illnesses due to lower

vaccination rates and

also to outbreaks of new

and dangerous airborne illnesses. Perhaps one day, one of our students will be instru-

mental in discovering a cure to a harmful disease! Sue Chan

En el 6to grado los estudiantes exploraron las délulas de organismos vivos. Para ayu-

dar a los estudiantes a que se familiaricen con las partes de una planta o de células

animal, los estudiantes crearon modelos de células utilizando artículos de artesanías

y de uso común. Los estudiantes demostraron su creatividad y disfrutaron del enfo-

que educativo incorporando manos a la obra para aprender sobre las células. Para

prestarle mas entusiasmo al proceso, los estudiantes votaron por el proyecto mas

creativo, el mas atractivo, y por el mas repulsivo de los modelos de células. Luego

del ejercicio los estudiantes relacionaron lo aprendido sobre las células a varios tópi-

cos corrientes relacionados a enfermedades emergentes debido a los bajos índices

de vacunación al igual que a brotes nuevos y peligrosos de enfermedades llevados

por aire. Quizás algún día uno de nuestros estudiantes podrá tomar parte en el des-

cubrimiento de una cura de una enfermedad nociva. Sue Chan

Estimadas Familias,

Este ha sido un primer año para mi como principal

de Family Life Academy Charter School I lleno de

estimulantes retos. Tuve la maravillosa oportunidad

de trabajar con ustedes y con sus niños/as ofre-

ciéndoles un ambiente de enseñanza seguro que

a su vez apoya el éxito de los estudiantes.

Al culminar el año escolar quiero agradecerles a

nombre de toda la empleomanía de FLACS I el

apoyo que le prestan a la escuela y a los estudian-

tes y los programas a través de todo el año. Estoy

muy agradecido que ustedes entienden el valor

de la educación de sus niños/as y que siempre se

mantienen envueltos en este proceso y sus acom-

pañantes actividades aun con los retos. Su interés

y empeño en el progreso de su enseñanza les mo-

tivará a rendir su mejor labor. Sabemos que la

crianza de niños/as no es una labor fácil hoy en

día. Según vayan creciendo sus hijos/as podrán

mejor apreciar el beneficio que surge de su partici-

pación activa. También les invito a que tomen

parte activa en la Asociación de Padres.

Pasando a otro tópico, el verano ya está en todo

su apogeo y no hay mejor tiempo que este para

pensar y explorar sobre los programas que apoyan

la lectura dentro de nuestras bibliotecas públicas.

No solo es el leer durante el verano una actividad

divertida pero también es una buena manera de

asegurar que su hijo/a estará lista/o para el nuevo

comienzo de año escolar en septiembre. POR FA-

VOR aseguren que ellos continúen perfeccionan-

do y practicando a diario durante el verano las

muy importantes destrezas asociadas con la lectu-

ra. Debe hacerse una obligación – más bien un

hábito compulsorio de cada día. ¡El leer es la des-

treza mas importante que su hijo o hija pueden

dominar para poder disfrutar de una exitosa edu-

cación!

A los estudiantes le exhorto que disfruten el verano

con sus familias. Les deseo que puedan participar

a menudo del buen tiempo y de las actividades.

Recuerden incluir la lectura como parte de sus

vacaciones de verano y los veremos en el otoño.

¡Gracias por un año espectacular! Como de cos-

tumbre, si tienen cualquier pregunta o preocupa-

ción, favor de llamar, o enviar nota por correo

FLACS I News & Views •Noticias y Vistas For the second year in a row, FLACS I has re-

ceived a Bronze Excellence in School Wellness

Award for creating a healthy school environment

as a means to prevent childhood obesity and

improve academic achievement among our

students. Mr. Art Valentine, our Health and Well-

ness Teacher, received the award on behalf of

FLACS I on Wednesday, June 3rd at the United

Federation of Teachers Headquarters in Manhat-

tan along with other award recipients.

NYC Excellence in School Wellness Award was

created to recognize elementary schools for their

work in raising awareness about the healthy im-

pact nutrition and weight management can

have on a child’s ability to learn and live produc-

tive lives. The NYC Department of Health and

Mental Hygiene and its partners hope the award

will not only highlight school policies and practices that make a healthy school,

but also encourage schools to do more. Now in its fifth year, the award program

has added a new award level, Platinum, for schools that meet all criteria in the

award.

Por el segundo año consecutivo FLACS I recibió el Premio Bronce por Excelencia

en Bienestar en las Escuelas por haber creado en ambiente saludable como me-

dio de prevenir la obesidad juvenil y de esa manera mejorar los logros académi-

cos entre nuestros estudiantes. El Sr. Art Valentine, nuestro maestro de Bienestar y

Salud, recibió el premio a nombre de FLACS I el miércoles 3 de junio en la sede del

sindicato de maestros en Manhattan junto con otros destinatarios del premio.

El premio NYC Excellence in School Wellness Award fue creado para reconocer a

las escuelas que aumentan la conciencia sobre el impacto saludable que tienen

la buena nutrición y el saber manejar el peso pueden tener sobre la habilidad de

poder aprender y vivir vidas productivas. El NYC Department of Health and Men-

tal Hygiene y sus asociados esperan que el premio no solo resalte las pólizas y

prácticas de las escuelas que se esmeran por crear escuelas sanas, pero que

también las animen a hacer mas. En su quinto año, el programa de reconoci-

miento le ha añadido un nuevo nivel catalogado como Platino para esas escue-

las que llenen todos los requisitos del programa.

FLACS I News & Views •Noticias y Vistas Run the Bronx 2015 — Corriendo el Bronx 2015

Once again our FLACS Scholars have done it! On Saturday students, staff and parents

participated in the 37th annual Run the Bronx Race, which consists of a 2mile walk, 5k run

(3.1 miles) , and 10k run(6.2 miles). All participants received a medal as they crossed the

finish line. However, FLACS had 5 students who won individual trophies in their age cate-

gories. Please note that there were many children from other schools and groups partici-

pating in this race, so for our students to accomplish this feat is amazing!

We had a group of over 50 participants and received special recognition for having the

largest registered group. Our group had a picture taken with our US Congressman and

the president of the university for our accomplishments. The congressman was so

impressed with our school, he wants to come and visit.

Thanks to all the staff who participated and helped in any way.
