WEBINAR

Managing Risks in ECE: Preventing Legal Hot Spots from Becoming Lawsuits, by Tom Copeland and Holly Elissa Bruno

Early Childhood Investigations is thrilled to welcome Holly Elissa Bruno and Tom Copeland to Early Childhood Investigations for another thought-provoking webinar.

Do you worry that your actions as a child care administrator may encourage a parent to sue your program? This webinar will offer practical advice on how to reduce the risks of lawsuits. Two attorneys will help guide you through the legal maze to avoid illegal discrimination, maintain confidentiality, and establish policies and procedures to resolve conflict. This webinar will help you reduce the risks of lawsuits by offering practical advice on how to handle issues with potential legal consequences: parents picking up children while drunk, staff gossip, confidentiality in the age of the Internet, hiring and firing employees, and addressing child abuse and neglect.

All sessions are 1.5 hours long, and include a brief announcement from our sponsor.

April 18 at 2:oo PM – 3:30 PM Eastern Time.

The importance of spring cleaning is to help you focus on new goals, positive health, mental well-being, summer activities, fun, and a fresh start to the New Year. Spring cleaning also helps you improve your health by reducing stress, frustration, and your chances of getting a cold by removing all the bacteria and germ build up.

So open up a window and let the fresh air in. *Don’t forget to clean the window first.

Here are 7 helpful tips to get you started:

Involve the children– One way children learn is by observation. By observing you care for your home possessions, teach them responsibility, good habits, and appreciation. To involve a child of any age ask them to help clean the toys with a wipe. Although a wipe does not disinfect or clean, it gives them a sense of helpfulness and accomplishment when the job is done, and teaches self help skills.

Work from the top down- Start with the ceilings, a lot of dust or even spider webs can accumulate in the corners. Then go onto all the ceiling fans and light fixtures, they too can get quite dusty. A broom can help get to all these areas.

Clean your drapes and blinds- What good is a clean window if your blinds or window treatments are dirty? Most drapes can be placed in the washer; check tag for care instructions. For aluminum blinds a scrub down with a wash cloth or a dip in the bathtub will do. For wooden blinds refer to care instructions.

De-clutter and rediscover- Clean out bulk items using up space and reuse them for something else. Example: old magazines- have children cut out things they like or multicultural people and paste onto a construction paper for a nice collage.

Don’t forget about the big items- This is a good time to ask parents for swim suits, water shoes, and sun screen. When the weather is warm, take all your big plastic items (toys stove, toy kitchen, or vanities) to the back yard. With the water hose wet the toys and give each child a rag to help clean the toys. You can use a soap base solution to clean the toys (the children love the bubbles).

Toy bath- Please do this when there are no children in your business. Fill your bathtub with bleach solution (¾ cup of bleach per gallon of water). Soak all non electrical toys in bleach solution for 5 minutes, rinse, and air dry.

Last but not least, New Year file review- This is your chance to review all your business paper files. Go through

each one and make sure they are updated (shot records, physicals, new contacts, ECT.). A good way to reduce file

clutter is to use a computer scanner, place all scanned paper work in separate personal files in your computer.

April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month

Did you know that more than 1 million children are victims of child abuse and neglect each year, according to state child protective service agencies?

Chapter 39 of the Florida Statutes (F.S.) mandates that any person who knows, or has reasonable cause to suspect, that a child is abused, neglected, or abandoned by a parent, legal custodian, caregiver, or other person responsible for the child's welfare shall immediately report such knowledge or suspicion to the Florida Abuse Hotline of the Department of Children and Families.

Everyone has a responsibility to report suspected child abuse or neglect, but as a child care professional it is MANDATORY and required by Florida law that you do so. As a childcare provider you are considered a “professionally mandatory reporter”, also including but not limited to Physicians, healthcare professionals, school officials, law enforcement officers, and social workers. If you fail to report suspected child abuse or neglect you can be persecuted with up to 1 year in jail and up to $1,000 in fines.

All reports are confidential, but all mandatory reporters are required by law to provide their name, address, and contact information. However, your contact information will be held confidential. Any individual who complies with the law of reporting child abuse or neglect in good faith is protected from civil or criminal liability.

Do you know the possible signs of child abuse or neglect?

• Shows sudden changes in behavior or school performance

• Has not received help for physical or medical problems brought to the parents'

attention;

• Has learning problems (or difficulty concentrating) that cannot be attributed to

specific physical or psych logical causes;

• Is always watchful, as though preparing for something bad to happen

• Lacks adult supervision;

• Is overly compliant, passive, or withdrawn;

• Comes to school or other activities early, stays late, and does not want to go home.
