RSC Family MembershipNew for 2015, the Royal Shakespeare Company has launched Family Membership – a scheme to help you make the most out of your family trip to Stratford-upon-Avon. For just £40 a year, you can access a range of family benefits including Fun Filled Family Fridays! Under 18s visiting the RSC’s family friendly Stratford-upon-Avon home with a Family Member on a Friday can get £5 tickets to our productions, saving you up to £21 per ticket (terms and conditions apply).

For younger children, the magical Wendy & Peter Pan returns this winter, following a sell-out run in 2013. Wendy, Peter, Tink, Captain Hook and the Lost Boys are waiting to take you on an unforgettable journey. For older kids, Henry V provides the perfect introduction to Shakespeare, as Prince Hal leaves his rebellious youth behind and heads to war in a play filled with battles, spirit and some of Shakespeare’s most famous speeches.

Other Family Membership benefits include a free pudding or mocktail for under 18s in the beautiful Rooftop Restaurant on Fridays. The Rooftop serves locally-sourced, freshly prepared modern British food in a relaxed, comfortable setting. Under 18s coming to

the theatres with a Family Member on a Friday can also go free on behind the scenes tours, which give an insight into the secrets and stories behind the RSC, and can go free up the Tower where you can see beautiful views of Stratford-upon-Avon and the surrounding countryside. Check www.rsc.org.uk for times and availability of Theatre Tours.

Whenever you visit the RSC in Stratford, there is something for all ages. Join in with the family play cart, dress up in a fabulous Shakespearean costume or hunt round the theatre with our free Family Trail. If you come during school holidays, there are all kinds of activities and workshops to choose from, for the whole family.

News

New development checksParents are to get a complete picture of their child’s development at the age of two, as part of new reforms to help families. With over £2million pledged to support joined-up checks on education and health development, parents will now have a better picture of their child’s progress at this early stage. ‘No parent should be left in the dark about their child’s development,’ said Childcare Minister Sam Gyimah. ‘There should be an accessible check for all at the age of two, which is a pressure point where issues such as speech delay and behavioural problems begin to appear.’ Health Minister Dr Dan Poulter added, ‘We know it’s important to check children’s health and development when they are two, so that if extra support is needed it can be identified early. Integrated reviews and the huge increase in health visitors will lead to better outcomes for children and families.’ The Integrated Review, which will be implemented nationally from September 2015, will be available to children between 24 and 30 months old.

It is important that separating parents communicate with one another at all times in respect of issues regarding their child/children. Whilst it will need to be understood by all that there is no prospect of reconciliation between the parents, they should seek to maintain a united front in their role as parents in the best interests of the children.

There are a number of key issues and decisions which have to be made throughout separation including:• Deciding where the children will live - It

is vital to remember the children will need a settled environment.

• How the child/children will maintain relationships with both parents - The law says that it is the right of the children to see the parents and not the other way round.

• School requirements - There does need to be flexibility in arrangements so that the child/children can complete their homework and fully participate in school events.

• Holiday requirements - Parents need to organise and arrange holiday contact with each other, sufficiently in advance.

• The wishes of the children - This is a very important consideration, but should be kept in proportion with the age and understanding of the child.

• School events - For events such as sports day you may want to consider it sensible

for you to attend together but where there are events taking place over more than one evening (eg. a school play) you might want to consider attending separately.

• Birthdays and special occasions - Parents do need to decide who is to hold the birthday party for children and whether it is right that there should be two separate birthday parties, whether for friends or family.

• The introduction of new partners - It is vital that any new partner is introduced, intentionally, to the children only after careful consultation with the other parent. It is the introduction of third parties into the equation that, in family practitioners’ experience, is the most frequent area of tension between parents over children, and this is something that you need to avoid.

Finally, a key point to take on board is that if parents tackle a potential issue early on, then the opportunities for misunderstandings and disagreements are so much lessened.

FREE FUNDING FOR 2 YEARS+

Footsteps NurseryThe best start to your child’s journey in early years educationYou’ve made the important decision as to which nursery your baby will attend but what next? Getting it right in the first couple of weeks ensures that children enjoy their time and make the most of the different learning opportunities they are offered.

Settling-in processEvery child is unique with a different routine; this information is collected at a Home Visit. A member of staff will spend time with you and your baby in familiar surroundings whilst observing their play and the things that they enjoy. Short visits to nursery follow - introducing your child into the nursery and meeting their key person. This is an essential part of the settling process as young children need a secure attachment with a familiar adult to enable them to gain the confidence to explore independently (and you need to get to know the staff that will be looking after your children and feel comfortable when leaving them).

First DayWe aim to make the first full day at nursery as smooth as possible by ensuring everything that your baby needs is already here. All meals and drinks are included within session fees, as are nappies, wipes and creams. During a typical day at nursery your child will experience a variety of learning opportunities on both a one to one basis and in groups. Our facilities include forest school, outdoor play areas, cooking club, and other sensory, i.e. messy, experiences so sending a change of clothing is a good idea.

Spending time at nursery is proven to be a beneficial experience for children. At Footsteps our ‘One Step Ahead’ philosophy maximises these benefits and ensures a safe and inspiring environment for the development your child’s potential.www.footstepsnurseries.co.uk

Your show is about to begin…Let’s Animate is a mobile stop-motion animation workshop which delivers fun-packed creative animation courses, workshops, holiday clubs, birthday parties and much more. Based in Coventry and Warwickshire, Let’s Animate was set up in 2012 by Gemma Amos, an industry professional with a passion for implementing animation as a creative tool.

The Let’s Animates ‘hands on’ animation experience uses a range of equipment including Apple IPads, to create an animation studio that can be replicated at home or other locations. Participants experience design, storyboarding, set building, model making, lighting, animating, sound and editing, directing and producing their very own stop-motion animated movie, that can then be kept, viewed and shared. Working with groups and organisations, in schools, galleries, museums and other settings, Let’s Animate uses animation to enhance expression, team skills and problem solving, develop imaginative investigation and confidence, and above all have fun!

Recently Let’s Animate launched into animation birthday parties for children aged 8+ and this venture has proved a fantastic success. Parties can be tailored to any theme. Brad, aged 9, chose a Minecraft party…

“Our 9-year-old son was joined by 5 friends plus his brother and sister. Everyone had a great time. The children split into 3 groups - each building a set, creating the characters, agreeing the script, capturing the stop motion images on IPads and then adding the sounds. It was great to see the children working together and exploring their imagination. Most of all though, they were totally engaged and having fun! The IPad software was really rather clever and the resulting movies are actually excellent quality.”

For more information about Let’s Animate courses, clubs, workshops and birthday parties please visit www.letsanimate.co.uk, email [email protected] or call Gem on 0797 3354567.

May Half Term cont...

Your summer starts here at Coventry Museums! It’s set to be an exciting few months at Coventry’s museums, with the much-loved Transport Museum due to relaunch in June after a stunning £9m makeover, and the perfect nostalgic family exhibition opening at the Herbert for the summer.

Coventry Transport Museum is firmly fixed as a family favourite in many Warwickshire households, but from June onwards things will be even bigger and better than ever. The museum is in the final stages of a huge redevelopment, which is transforming 12 of its 14 exhibitions to create a truly interactive and immersive experience for children and grownups alike. With loads of things to touch, buttons to press, dressing up and heaps more, not to mention FREE admission, a visit to the newly revamped museum is a must for families this summer. Whilst the final touches won’t be added until June, many of the new exhibitions will be open in time for the May half term break. And as always, there’ll be a full programme of crafts, activity trails and other add-ons to keep you entertained all holiday long. www.transport-museum.com

Just a few minutes’ walk from Coventry Transport Museum sits the Herbert Art Gallery & Museum, another firm favourite for school holiday trips. The Herbert is well known for its exciting programme of temporary exhibitions but this summer, the Herbert team have excelled themselves, bringing together a brilliant new exhibition ‘The Story of Children’s Television’, which opens on 22 May and runs right through until September. The interactive exhibition is sure to be a nostalgic trip down memory lane for adults, as well as including exhibits from many of the most recent children’s TV favourites, to create a truly multi-generational museum experience.
