For mini Shakespeare, providing a safe and stimulating environment for the under-fives is all about getting the balance right between theory and practice.

“I started in child care 27 years ago when my eldest son was born and I volunteered at our local pre-school group. I then became a member of staff and did my training and the more I trained and the more I researched, the more I understood how much goes into early years education and how true it was that the first five years of a child’s life are the most important!”

Having such a long heritage in the early years’ sector gives mini a sense of perspective that has helped her ensure that the Birch Farm Nursery, now in its 25th year, continues to be at

the forefront of best practice.“When I first went into child care, it was very much you sat them down with a worksheet and a piece of paper and I could see that children were learning nothing from this”.

“I was able to gradually change this because I could see that research was coming out that had much more understanding about the way under-fives really learnt and was actually able to turn theory into practice”.

mini rates the current early Years Foundation stage because...

“It is very much led by play and hands-on learning and that is what I can see works and what I could see working 25 years ago. The circle has come back round and the balance between real stuff and paperwork is coming on well”.

mini, who has herself a degree in the subject, believes that having well qualified staff is an essential ingredient in what has made Birch Farm such a first-rate environment for the under-fives.

“More early years’ practitioners now have honours degrees and there is evidence that shows those highly trained members of staff in turn lead practice and help develop other members of staff.

“That’s very much the situation here. As a great believer in learning through experience, I also take on an Apprentice once a year in order to develop the next generation of Birch Farm staff”.

Talking of generations, given her long-standing experience in child care, what has kept mini going for so long?

“I think I’ve lasted so long because I’m passionate about what I do and it’s been the same for the whole nursery to be honest. I love what I do and it is all about the children, being with them, seeing them learn and develop and that’s what we do at Birch Farm”.

Getting a mortgage when you’re self employed

As if there isn’t enough stress in being self employed, freelance or a contractor, persuading a mortgage provider to lend to you is an additional concern of many people who have chosen this career path. Mat Thomas, Underwriting Manager at Ipswich Building Society offers Families Suffolk readers some valuable guidance.

*Research carried out in conjunction with IPSE March/April 2015. Sample size 918.

2 in 5 of those who have (or intend to have) a mortgage in the future are worried they might have difficulty arranging finance because of their working status*

Over three quarters (77%) of self employed people said they were concerned about not being able to shop around to arrange a mortgage as there are only a handful of companies likely to lend to them*

nearly two thirds (63%) of self employed people believe that mortgage providers expect them to jump through more hoops than employed people during the application process*

Find out more by calling Ipswich Building Society on 0330 123 0773 or visit www.ibs.co.uk

This is an after effect of 2014’s mortgage market review, which introduced affordability assessments to prevent excessive borrowing. This made it pretty tough for anyone with “non-standard” earnings, including older borrowers and the self employed, to get a home loan.

At Ipswich Building Society we use manual underwriting to assess applications, not computer based scoring. our qualified mortgage professionals are experts in understanding and reviewing mortgage applications from the self employed, or anyone who may be considered a ‘mortgage misfit’.

Our top 5 tips for self-employed mortgage applicants:

• Have accounts signed off by a suitably qualified accountant and obtain a certificate.

• obtain SA302s (Hmrc receipt confirming earnings) or electronic equivalents.

• Have credible earnings/business forecasts in place, and if approaching a year end have predictions of year end position.

• Provide evidence of previous contracts, time remaining on current contracts and, if applicable, work history in the same field prior to becoming self employed, freelance or a contractor.

• Prepare documentation required by mortgage providers such as bank statements, evidence of child tax credits, balances of other outstanding loans, credit cards etc.

Festivals are funEasy steps to make your kids’ first festival a breeze By Sally J. Hall

Introducing your children to all kinds of music can be a great way to give them a lifelong love of everything from folk to classical. Many of the UK’s festivals have plenty to do for the whole family and with some careful planning and by packing a few essentials, you’ll all have a great time.

Where to stayIf you have (and know how to put up) a tent, this can be the most cost-effective way of attending a festival, as ticket prices can be high. check the tent before you go, to ensure it has all its poles and pins. A good ground sheet is a must, as are camp beds or self-inflating air beds. A playpen is great for babies and small children to sleep in at night and play in the day.

Alternatively, other options, from pre-erected tents to Yurts and teepees may be provided. Take a look at the festival’s website to see what’s suitable. If you can’t face roughing it, book a local hotel or bed & breakfast. You’ll have a bolthole should the weather turn nasty and somewhere to wash properly!

Site MapTake time to orient yourself around the site, find where your favourite bands will be and most importantly, check out where the loos and showers are. These can get very busy and there are often long queues. For small kids, take a travel potty, as kids often need to ‘go’ quite suddenly. most festivals have a craft and activities area for kids too. Pushchairs can be tricky to use if the ground is muddy. carriers are more portable and take up less space...With small kids, try to camp in the family or quiet areas so that you won’t all be kept awake by people coming back to their tents (in all conditions) through the small hours.

Setting up car parks can be quite a way from camps, so try to ensure that all gear can be put into a couple of backpacks for you and your partner to carry – and still have a hand free for the kids. Some festivals rent a wagon to transport your stuff, which you can then use to pull the kids around in.

What to eat There are usually lots of food stalls but bear in mind they can be pricey. If you want to do your own cooking, invest in a camp stove. easy, one pot meals are best, like soups, stews, rice or pasta, Freeze some home made meals, then just before you leave, put them in a cool box together with drinks and milk.

Take lots of snacks too, in case cooking or queuing for meals takes longer than you think!

SafetyKids should have your name (not theirs) and number on them in case they get separated. Write it on their arm, or buy luggage tags and attach them to their clothes and bags. Talk to them about how to behave should they get lost. make sure your phone is charged, so if your kids do get separated, you are able to be contacted. Dress your kids in bright clothes so you can spot them and take a photo of them each morning, so if they go wandering, you can remember how they were dressed and show others. Don’t take valuables and keep things you can’t leave behind, such as phone, keys, your purse and credit cards, with you in a day pack all day. Never leave them in your tent.

Fancy dressmany festivals now have a fancy dress parade as part of the fun, so take costumes. Some things can be made on-site at a craft stall. Face paints are great to pack, as are glow sticks and bubbles.

Packing list• Waterproofs and wellies, comfy shoes• Toiletries in small packs, a hang-up sponge bag you can take to the shower. Toothbrushes and paste.• lots of changes of clothing• Warm jumpers and socks• Sun screen and hats• A baby carrier • Torch and batteries• Phone and charger • ear defenders • Toilet rolls, tissues and wipes• Insect repellent• First aid kit• comfy clothes • Flasks, camping cutlery and crockery• Small backpacks for all, with a change of clothes, loo paper, wipes and snack in each, plus drinks. • camera

Impact & change your School with YogaBugs

May - June 2016

YogaBugs ensures that the core benefits of yoga are entwined with interactive stories that stretch imagination, build self-confidence and enhance self-esteem to support each child both physically and mentally.

over the last 5 years we have been gathering data on the improvements children make through yoga in the curriculum within physical, emotional, social and behavioural criteria. We have assessed improvements through the implementation of our most popular programme - Impact and change.Impact and change is a results-driven child development programme that runs during the curriculum. All of our classes are carefully structured to develop children emotionally and physically whilst enhancing their learning experience. Teaching stories through yoga inspired moves, our programmes engage children of all abilities and make a positive measurable improvement to the education and well being of children. The Impact & change programme takes a whole school approach, offering training to the staff on simple breathing and relaxation techniques that they can deliver to the children on a daily basis to further enhance benefits of the programme.

YogaBugs has been successfully integrating yoga inspired classes into school curriculum for over 10 years, helping thousands of children along our journey.

HOW DO OUR cLaSSES WORK?YogaBugs classes bring stories to life through specially developed moves inspired by yoga. combining fun with exercise, children go on wild adventures where they may roar like a lion, fly like a bird or blast into outer space! All children can do YogaBugs to their own ability. children don’t need to be fast, have good hand to eye co-ordination or be physically fit. children are encouraged to be vocal during a class and express their emotions physically. Through creative visualisation techniques we help children believe they are unique and special.

Balancing postures help children to focus their mind and concentration techniques keep the mind in one place instead of letting it wander. There is a big emphasis on children having fun in a YogaBugs class as we encourage them to develop their creative imagination.

We invite parents to attend a YogaBugs workshop where they can join in with their child’s adventure. We also supply parents with information and exercises they can practice at home together.

the programme has achieved results of up to 40% improvement in pupils across the uK in five key areas of social, emotional, physical and behavioural criteria.

YogaBugs works alongside primary school teachers to assess children on key criteria at the beginning end of the programme. The school is supplied with a detailed report showing both the individual and group improvements across all target areas. Schools have used the Impact & change report for ofsted as well as showing evidence of PSHe.

We tailor our classes to suit each school’s needs, whether to run in line with the curriculum, to offer a before or after school club, a special event such as

health week or cover PPA. Whatever a school is looking for, we are sure to have a programme to suit. For a free taster please contact Somer lynn on 0845 863 0693 / [email protected]

As parents there are a number of ways you can support your child’s learning and education in a fun and engaging way.Reading & WritingWe all know the importance of reading with our children, but how about making reading even more fun by letting your child be the star of their very own book. From as early as age three, your child will be encouraged to start to recognise and write their own name at Nursery. Thanks to The lemon Tree Book company, you can really help encourage this by creating personalised books. You can even include the names of their best friends or other family members. Their fantastic website allows you to customise stories, and the best bit is, the stories can then be downloaded and printed straight away and your children can make their very own books which they can read over and over again. For more information visit: www.lemontreebookco.com.

art & DesignWhilst we all enjoy an arts and craft session on a rainy afternoon, it’s easy to forget that Art and Design is also a National curriculum subject, and so next time you decide to get a bit creative, think about the wider benefits your children may be getting. According to the National curriculum from Key stage 1 pupils should be taught:

• To use a range of materials creatively to design and make products.• To use drawing, painting and sculpture to develop and share their ideas, experiences and imagination.• To develop a wide range of art and design techniques in using colour, pattern, texture, line, shape, form and space• About the work of a range of artists, craft makers and designers, describing the differences and similarities between different practices and disciplines, and making links to their own work*

Next time you want to support your child’s creative side we highly recommend a visit to Glass & craft. They offer a fantastic range of activities from glass painting and decopatch to sand art and fabric fun. With 2 dedicated craft studios you will not be short of things to do. To find out more visit: www.glassandcraft.co.uk *www.gov.uk

Extraordinary education in Suffolk Museums! Quality time together as a family may not normally include getting up close to an egyptian mummy or exploring an Anglo-Saxon village. Yet, Suffolk’s many wonderful museums provide exactly that – a fun, educational day out with a difference. From visiting lost towns and iconic buildings to finding great works of art and feats of engineering, Suffolk museums offer inspirational spaces for families to explore and discover together. They give the chance for children to see the real-thing, re-enforcing and enriching lessons learned in the classroom on history, science, art and design, whilst providing a stimulating environment for new thought and ideas.

This summer, museums across Suffolk will host a range of exciting, educational activities with a difference for families and children. From archery to arts and crafts, science competitions, story-telling, treasure trails and baking join in the fun and discover together, look further and be inspired by something new this summer in Suffolk museums. BABY & ToDDler

10 things to know when swimming with your baby

Baby swimming is one of the most amazing experiences you can share with your baby. It is one of the few things you and your baby can enjoy together. there are many things to consider when taking a baby swimming but don’t be put off by the logistics – it’s well worth it!

By Claire Bailey, Puddle Ducks

Babies can be taken into the water from birth -they do not need to have completed their injections.

Going to a class provides support and enables you to relax & enjoy the experience. Good teachers are trained to understand the needs of both parent and baby.

Any pool you choose should be heated to over 30°c, clean and well-managed. If you can’t find a warm pool, use a neoprene wrap that acts as a little wet suit.

Babies with a chest, ear or eye infection should avoid swimming until it has cleared and no child should go swimming with anything that could be infectious, such as chickenpox.

If a baby is tired or hungry, then they are unlikely to enjoy swimming. Breast or bottle-fed babies can be fed immediately before or after the class (or even for a few minutes during the class). Babies on solids should just have a light snack an hour before swimming.

Swimming nappies must be worn and need to be a good fit around the waist and the legs.

Focus on your baby and stay relaxed. Float your baby on their back with support under their head, swaying from side to side. Sing songs, play games and remember to smile!

Bring a changing mat or towel to lay on the floor pool side to help get your baby into the pool and to change them on after the session.

When your baby gets out of the water they may be cold, tired & hungry! Have a well sized hooded bath towel / robe to wrap round your baby,a hat for their head (even on a warm day for the first few minutes of coming outside) and something to eat.

Finally – enjoy the peace and quiet when you get home as your baby has a wonderful sleep!

NAME, LOCATION AND NATURE OF yOUR EMPLOyERS: I started working as a social worker for clIc Sargent in June 2014, based at Addenbrooke’s hospital in cambridge. I came to this role having already had experience of cancer within my own family and have seen it affecting so many other families I know; I could not think of a more important and rewarding charity to work for.

yOUR DAy TO DAy ROLE: my day-to-day role can be really varied: I’ll be meeting new families in the hospital whose child has just been diagnosed with cancer to offer them support. Then I’ll check in with families on the hospital ward or in the day unit to see how they are and offer them further support. Sometimes I’ll be liaising with clIc Sargent and other organisations to access days out, weekend breaks and Wishes to help that child live their life to the full.

HOW DO yOU FIT yOUR WORk AROUND FAMILy LIFE? Being a mum in this role can of course be tough at times: I have two girls myself, aged 5 and 3 and I am also expecting my third child in September 2016. It’s only natural to have moments when you imagine yourself in the situation of your own child being diagnosed with a serious, life threatening illness. obviously there can be some really hard days in this role and being human, I have on occasions gone home and had a good sob. However, I quickly remind myself that I need to remain grounded, that this sadness is not my sadness and I am very fortunate to not be in this situation. I then immerse myself in having fun with my family; I even let my girls get the dreaded arts & crafts out!

WHAT ARE THE MOST COMMON DIFFICULTIES yOU FACE IN

yOUR ROLE? every family is different but all will experience the emotional trauma from point of diagnosis, throughout the treatment plan and at the point of finishing treatment and having anxieties about the future. Parents will have to take long periods of time off work which can greatly impact on their financial circumstances and their ability to continue to make their basic monthly payments so I’ll spend a lot of time helping families to access benefits and further grants where necessary.

IN yOUR ROLE WHAT MAkES yOU SMILE OR GIVES yOU THE MOST SATISFACTION? occasionally a family may send me a photo of their child wearing the Supershoes I’ve helped them receive, a day out I’ve helped arrange or their Wish experience. The smiles on the child’s faces make it all worthwhile.

Mum in Business: Kelly Boulter, cLIc SargentSoon to be mum of three, Kelly Boulter is a social worker for the children and young person’s cancer charity, CLIC Sargent. Kelly tells Families Suffolk about juggling family time with being a key support for families when they are faced with the shock of a childhood cancer diagnosis and why getting your wig on is so important.

Along with my colleagues I will be wearing some fun wigs in the office and sharing pictures on social media to help raise awareness for children and young people with cancer, many of whom lose their hair as a consequence of their treatment. everyone can get involved, clIc Sargent is looking for people to be sponsored to sport wacky wigs in schools, colleges and workplaces and nominate their friends or colleagues to do the same.

To find out more about Wig Wednesday and to request a fundraising pack visit www.clicsargent.org.uk/wigwednesday or call 08451 212 492

WHAT yOU ARE DOING ON WIG WEDNESDAy? • WEDNESDAy 25TH MAy 2016 •

An outing with the family can provide a welcome break from every day stresses and strains but finding a sport that the whole family can enjoy together is not always easy. Golf really can be a sport that is fun for everyone to enjoy, whether young or old.

At Ufford Park we are known for many things including our award-winning, free draining golf course which is open all year round. We believe in introducing children to golf as early as possible, and our unique two-tier floodlit driving range, is the only one of its kind in Suffolk. It is also accessible to everyone, members or non-members, including children from the age of four. Golf clubs are free to use (subject to their availability), and if Families readers come in with their children during this may’s half term holiday (30th may - 3rd June) show this magazine on arrival and we will give you two buckets full of golf balls to play with for the price of just one.

There’s no need to book, just turn up, so why not come along and combine a visit to the driving range with a family meal in one of our dining areas? After all, another thing we’re known for is our excellent range of freshly prepared, locally sourced food. We hope to welcome you soon.

HeAlTH & WellBeING

In other words, it won’t be hard to get your kids on the trampoline at Jump Street, essex’s premier trampoline park. The hard bit will be getting them off again.

low impact exercise, like the people bouncing at Jump Street, is on the rise – and for good reason. The trampoline absorbs the shock, meaning your legs don’t get jarred. And a ten minute bounce gives you all the cardio benefits of a half hour run.

If that sounds like your thing, then colchester’s Jump Street is the perfect place to give low impact exercises a try. With over 20,000 square feet of interconnected trampolines to play on, there’s plenty of crazy fun to be had. There is also a slam-dunk area and a giant inflated bag upon which jumpers can safely practice flips and tricks. Plus it’s indoors, so no need to worry about classic British summertime weather.

During term-time, there’s a whole host of fitness sessions for those over 16, from Jump camp for those wanting to burn calories, to the yoga-based Jump mind and Body. There’s even a parent and toddler session where the under-fives get the opportunity to have a go on the trampolines.

So, if you’re looking to give the kids something fun and healthy to do, or try a new form of exercise yourself, then Jump Street is the perfect place to start.

Visit jumpstreet.co.uk to book a place or call 01206 911 035

Healthy fun for all the family at Jump StreetPounding the streets is not the only way to get fit. Low impact exercise, like trampolining, is kind on those knee joints, and more importantly, fun and exciting. It’s a great way to get trim, build stamina, and some believe, reduce cellulite. But it’s also a great way to keep children happy and healthy during those long summer holidays.
