Protect your children’s vision from harmful UV rays With summer on the way, it’s likely that you’re looking forward to spending lots of time outdoors with your children. It’s great to enjoy the sunshine but did you know that 80% of eye damage due to exposure to harmful UV rays occurs before the age of 18? Worryingly two thirds of parents don’t protect their kids eyes in the sun. This means that these children- and babies - are risking eye damage every time they go outside. Independent optician Ochil Eyes specializes in children’s eye care and has a huge range of prescription and non prescription sunglasses for kids. Parent and owner Mary Docherty advises parents to ensure their children wear sunglasses even on cloudy summer days. She says “Look out for sunglasses that block out 99% of UVA and UVB and always speak to an optician if you have any questions or concerns about your children’s eye health” To arrange an eye examination for your child simply contact the friendly team at Ochil Eyes on 01324 752 755 Ochil Eyes, 105 High Street Tillicoultry.Visit us on www.ochileyes.co.uk

Good point, but busy doing what? If they’re plugged into an iPad, picking fights with their siblings or glued

glazed-eyed to trash TV, then you all need inspiration. Which is where we come in, our feature in this issue will give you lots of great ideas for new Clubs and Classes and let you know what’s on offer in the Summer holidays!

When to startBabies love to get out and about and believe it or not, the time does come when you have more energy than it takes to stagger around Sainsbury’s. Music groups are a great start - you may be surprised how much your little one gets out of it, while you meet other grown ups as an added bonus. Even tiny babies can grab a rattle and feel the rhythm.

Older babies and toddlers love joining in with hand actions and songs. Singing nursery rhymes helps to develop language, memory and rhythm skills - a useful first step on the road to reading. Mini sports sessions are perfect for crawlers and toddlers who love to explore, climb, jump and roll; all essential skills to physical development and coordination (although you may regret it when they start scaling the kitchen table...). When you get home they’re ready for quieter pursuits like a story... or a welcome nap.

From 3 - 6 there is so much choice out there, time to try out different things - martial arts, gymnastics, rugby, yoga, football, dance, swimming and cycling - it depends on the child so just go out and experiment with what’s on offer and have fun!

From 6 years onwards the club scene kicks in big time. They’re old enough to follow instructions and can cope with being left by parents. Also by this stage you’re likely to have a good idea of which interest will suit your child; be it musical, sporty, dramatic or art based. As children head through their primary school years, interests tend to become more specific: sports turn into a place in a junior football or netball team; music classes lead to instrument tuition and a place in the school orchestra.

So – what and why?Sport and fitnessPlaying sport doesn’t just improve physical health - a study by the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority found that the adrenaline boost to pupils’ brains from games helps them concentrate on lessons, so reading and writing skills receive a boost too.

Performing arts and danceA great form of exercise whilst developing spacial awareness, poise and correct body alignment, accepting the body and being comfortable in it, along with social skills, building confidence and acquiring a sense of commitment and determination in order to achieve progress.

Music As a group activity, music encourages teamwork, co-operation and respect for others. Music is also believed to help spiritually and emotionally by developing the ability to communicate, and bringing a sense of wellbeing and ‘wholeness’.

Arts and craftsIf you are not artistically inclined yourself, or never seem to have time to sit down and help your children recreate Blue Peter masterpieces at home, why not leave it to the experts? You won’t have to clear up the fallout on the kitchen table and floor afterwards, and your child can proudly present you with the results as a gift to treasure.

School supportThousands of children receive out of school tuition to help if they are falling behind in class, or to boost skills and confidence. If your child needs more support than you can offer yourself, and you’ve exhausted the school’s additional resources, it may be worth looking into.

Many parents retain tutoring sessions over the holidays so their children can ‘get ahead’ on their return to school. This is also an excellent opportunity to ‘catch up’ with some intensive tutoring which can be tailored to your child’s requirements. Read a growing catalogue of excellent testimonials from many very happy parents on our website www.stepaheadtuition.com

I’m unofficially known as the Lego lady but I’m otherwise called Rachel. I live in Bridge of Allan with my husband Scott and our

three sons Gabriel (5), Rheyn (3) and Lennon (1). I own Bricks 4 Kidz Central Scotland - we run educational workshops for children (& grown ups!) using Lego bricks which is the best job in the world as not only do I get to build with Lego every day, I also get to combine it with the hugely rewarding job of teaching children valuable skills covering the core STEM subjects: Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths. Elements of all these things are covered in a Bricks 4 Kidz class plus the vast majority of our models are motorised which many of the children have never seen before. It’s great to see their reactions when their creations come to life at the flick of a switch.

Why do you like living where you do? Bridge of Allan is a great place to live especially now we have children. The school is within walking distance as are the nursery, the library and the parks. There are good shops and restaurants and Stirling Uni with it’s lovely campus grounds is just up the road. Not to mention the best ice cream ever now being sold at the Hideaway Café!

Favourite parkWe love the Helix Park in Falkirk as it’s a great place for the boys to let off steam either on their scooters, bikes or just by running around. It’s also very pram friendly. Now that the play area is complete our boys are in heaven.

We’re also very lucky to live right between two parks in Bridge of Allan – Fountain Park on one side and the Memorial Park on the other, so we’re spoilt for choice really.

Favourite children’s club/classBricks 4 Kidz obviously! Our tagline is ‘we learn, we build, we play…….with Lego bricks’ and that’s exactly what we do.

Kay Klass Street Dance is great and Water Babies is a fantastic way to introduce your baby to the water from a very young age and start to teach them a vital life skill.

Favourite day outWe like going down to Cramond beach with the scooters or bikes as it’s such a child

friendly place and they can get as much fresh air and exercise as they can handle.

The boys also love going to one of the many farm parks in the nice weather – Briarlands, Wellsfield, Active Kids and a bit further away, Muddy Boots in Cupar.

Favourite child friendly restaurantWe love the Hideaway it’s very child friendly with great staff and a lovely homely feel. Corrieri’s lasagne is also a great favourite so we have been known to pop in there on the odd weekend – much like the rest of the Stirling population!

Favourite night out without the kids.Really – do people with 3 young kids ever get a night out without them ?!

No parent should be withoutA sense of humour. Sadly mine does escape me at times but I do think it should be an essential part of the job description.

Parenting pet hatesCompetitive parents ! I know we all think our kids are the greatest (and ours are!) but I think it’s best to let them get on with it and not exert undue pressure. Growing up is hard enough without your parents piling it on.

Most embarrassing momentI can’t think of one thus far but I suspect that may be about to change as I’m doing the Forth Rail Bridge Charity abseil in June to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support. I’m hoping I don’t embarrass myself (and my family) whilst doing it.

Best children DVD or TV programmeA current favourite is Wallykazam ! as it’s so interactive. The boys love helping the characters on their adventures and we like it as it helps them learn spelling and maths.

Most played with toysDefinitely Gabriel’s Bat Cave. It seems to have a timeless appeal and all three boys will sit and play with the figures and secret contraptions for ages. The other thing that has definitely stood the test of time and I would recommend to every parent if they don’t already have one is a dressing up box. Ours is now so huge it fills two very large drawers but it gets used in some form almost every day.

Any other commentIf you’d like Bricks 4 Kidz at your school or event, or Bricks 4 Biz in your workplace please get in touch. You can contact us via the website: www.bricks4kidz.co.uk/central-scotland , via facebook or by phone 07594 062687.

Thinking of starting your own business

Are you a parent at home and looking for an income but not the commitment of being employed?

Then becoming self-employed may be the best option for you, as you can work from home and choose the hours you work. Self-employment doesn’t have to be scary or unachievable; our Business Advisers at your local Business Gateway office will be more than happy to assist you through the process.

Here are our top 5 tips when you are thinking about starting up: 1. Know and love your business idea;

make sure you are fully aware of all the benefits your product/service will bring to your customer, and be passionate about it as this will shine through when you are selling it. Running focus groups to discuss your services or to test your product is a great way to gain valuable feedback before you venture out.

2. Do your market research; market research is one of the most important tasks you will undertake before starting up your business. Knowing who your competitors are, who your target market is, how you are going to reach them and their buying behaviours is essential to making the right decisions. Business Gateway

provide a FREE information service that provides various information sources including company lists, demographics, statistics and much more; 0845 609 6611 or [email protected].

3. Finance; thinking about how you are going to fund the initial start-up, are you going to take out a loan from the bank or finance it yourself? Whatever you decide is best for you, you will need to have a sturdy business plan and financial forecasts. Making sure you take into account the costs of making the product or providing the service, profit margins, how much your competitors are charging and what you need the business to make to survive – Our business plan template will give you a detailed breakdown of potential costs, profit and loss and a personal survival budget: www.bgateway.com/business-guides/first-steps/business-plan-template.

4. Legal structure & HMRC; you need to decide what structure you want your business to take, whether that’s becoming a Sole Trader, Limited Company, Partnership or Social Enterprise. Do your research on what the best structure is for your business by checking out the government website: www.gov.uk/business-legal-structures. Once you have started

trading you must inform HMRC: www.online.hmrc.gov.uk/registration/newbusiness/introduction.

5. Business name & branding; Thinking about your business name is a hard task, this is what your business will be known as and it needs to be intriguing and attractive to gain new customers. The branding of your business is essential to attracting new customers and retaining them, thinking about colours that attract your target customer and the psychology behind them is a good place to start: www.entrepreneur.com/article/233843.
