Liverpool design agency, Black and Ginger has helped Vogue celebrate its 90th birthday.

The city centre-based creative studio teamed up with fashion boutique Cricket to celebrate the special anniversary of the style bible.

The Liverpool store was one of just five in Britain to have been asked to create a window for the celebration.

Cricket enlisted the expertise of Black and Ginger to create a window fit for Vogue after working with them on the creation of a brand new, iconic Cricket carrier bag.

Alex Frech, director of Black and Ginger, says: “Justine originally approached us to design a new carrier bag for Cricket. It was a brilliant opportunity for us; Cricket carrier bags are collectors items so we know our design had to be iconic.

“We kept with the animal print theme but introduced it in the format of a butterfly, keeping with the inimitable Cricket pink.

Alex continues: “Creating a window for Vogue doesn’t happen every day and we were honoured when Justine asked for our help. We decided to tie-in Cricket’s theme of butterflies and use

Justine’s own collection of Vogue back issues to create not only a visually appealing window but a reflection of Cricket’s position in the fashion industry.

“The butterflies fly from a stack of Vogue magazines reflecting how Cricket distributes fashion messages from Vogue and out to the public.”

This isn’t the first time Black and Ginger has created bespoke 3D displays. They have also designed World Cup and Grand National windows for world famous men’s lifestyle store Microzine, as well as creating the interior and exterior look of style-focussed casualwear store, Moose.

Sans SerifThe Ultimate Sourcebook of Classic and Contemporary Sans Serif Typography

Cees W. de Jong

Thames & Hudson£29.95

Anyone who has been a reader of 200 for a while will realise that we don’t just like san serif fonts we LOVE them! We can not get enough of them so imagine our joy when Thames & Hudson published Sans Serif a book full to the brim with examples of some of the finest sans serif fonts ever created.

Sans Serif contains a selection of not often seen sketches from type designers as well as early proofs of their creations. Dozens of type specimen sheets and extracts are included most of which display the art of the typographer to the fullest.

The book covers fonts created in the early 1900’s, such as the often overlooked Kabel created by Rudolf Koch in 1927, right through to modern day fonts with the Jan Sonntag designed font Hildegard created in 2003. The fonts featured provide an excellent cross section of the sans serif font design showing theie development over time.

In our view this book is going to be a studio and study essential and everyone with an interest in typography should not be without it. Excellent

The Dutch are well known for their graphic design. The wide ranging scope of work originating from the country as well as their innovative approach has placed the Netherlands firmly at the forefront of graphic design influencing generations of designers worldwide.

Dutch Graphic Design is one of the first books to cover the output of the Dutch from the end of the 19th century through to the inspired work of modern designers.

Of particular interest and something that is rarely covered in design books, is the work created during WW2, a time that it seems most young designers think that work ground to a halt amongst the turmoil of occupation. The book disproves this by displaying the interesting array of work produced both officially and by the underground presses.

Dutch Graphic Design is filled with over 500 colour illustrations and backgrounds informative text this book is an excellent source for professionals and students alike allowing the wealth of design produced by this nation to inspire generations of designers to come.

Harman Photo Professional Inkjet

New photographicinkjet paper launched

HARMAN technology has officially launched the first product in its pioneering range of professional photographic inkjet media.

The instant-dry paper incorporates real-photo Baryta, offering enhanced colour brightness, tonal range and archival properties. HARMAN has also developed unique anti-curl technology used in the production process to ensure the paper lies completely flat before, during and after printing. This flatness combined with a weight of 310gsm helps the media to emulate the physical essence of a traditional photographic print.

We tested the paper using our range of Epson printer that we use in the studio and found it to a be an excellent choice for full coverage colour prints but lacks slightly on the mono side but it still provides a gallery quality image.

‘In The Fore 2007’

17th January – 14th April 2007

The Noble Sage Art Gallery2A Fortis Green, London N2 9EL

Wednesday to Friday 9 - 6.30, weekends 10 - 5Closed Mondays ; By appointment only Tuesdays

The Noble Sage, the first gallery in the UK to specialise in Indian contemporary art, opens its new exhibition highlighting four leading lights in South India’s thriving art scene.

The main focus will be the stunning work of 74 year-old semi-figurative painter, A.P. Santhanaraj. A former principal of the Madras College of Arts & Crafts, Professor Santhanaraj is considered by many in South India to be the most influential artist of the second wave that followed K.C.S. Panniker and S. Dhanapal from the Madras School. Santhanaraj forged an exceptional artistic style dedicated to discovering the complexities of his canvas through abstract engagement with figurative subjects.

Alphonso Doss is referred to by many of his artist friends as ‘The Reverend Doss’. This is because of his general spirituality and great interest in world religions, their overlapping themes and motifs. His canvases show vibrant images of Shiva Nataraja (the classical Hindu depiction of the Lord of the Dance), the Buddha seated

in meditation and Christ healing the sick. Doss sees his art as an extension of a long history of religious painting.

Rekha Rao is a painter burning a bright path in Bangalore. Daughter of celebrated artist K.K. Hebbar, Rao displays exuberant colour and inventive, semi-narrative mark-making in her paintings. Her canvases combine a sense of fun and tongue-in-cheek humour which, in turn, creates a distinctive enjoyment for the viewer.

CF John’s interests have moved relatively recently to the field of canvas painting. For the series, ‘Four Corners of a Line’ (2006 shown left), John worked with an American performance artist, suspending her from his balcony roof by trapeze-like constructions. The results are astonishing – moments of unusual physical calm and motion arrested on the canvas.

Jana Manuelpillai, Director of The Noble Sage: “This exhibition is rather special. The variety of styles and content create a veritable feast for the eye! The four painters are deft masters of their art and this is visible as soon as you enter the gallery. To put it succinctly, they are ‘in the fore’ and you can see why.”
