1 Then God spoke all these words, saying, 2 “I am the LORD your

God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of

slavery. 3“You shall have no other gods before Me. 4 “You shall not

make for yourself an idol, or any likeness of what is in heaven above or

on the earth beneath or in the water under the earth. 5 “You shall not

worship them or serve them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous

God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, on the third and

the fourth generations of those who hate Me, 6 but showing

lovingkindness to thousands, to those who love Me and keep My

commandments.

15 They rejected His statutes and His covenant which He made with

their fathers and His warnings with which He warned them. And they

followed vanity and became vain, and went after the nations which

surrounded them, concerning which the LORD had commanded them

not to do like them. 16 They forsook all the commandments of the

LORD their God and made for themselves molten images, even two

calves, and made an Asherah and worshiped all the host of heaven

and served Baal. 17 Then they made their sons and their daughters

pass through the fire, and practiced divination and enchantments, and

sold themselves to do evil in the sight of the LORD, provoking Him. 18

So the LORD was very angry with Israel and removed them from His

sight; none was left except the tribe of Judah.

No one recalls, nor is there knowledge or understanding to say, “I have

burned half of it in the fire and also have baked bread over its coals. I

roast meat and eat it. Then I make the rest of it into an abomination, I

fall down before a block of wood!”

Now while Paul was waiting for them at Athens, his spirit was being

provoked within him as he was observing the city full of idols.

34 But when the Pharisees heard that Jesus had silenced the

Sadducees, they gathered themselves together. 35 One of them, a

lawyer, asked Him a question, testing Him, 36 “Teacher, which is the

great commandment in the Law?” 37 And He said to him, “ ‘YOU

SHALL LOVE THE LORD YOUR GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART, AND

WITH ALL YOUR SOUL, AND WITH ALL YOUR MIND.’ 38 “This is the

great and foremost commandment.

41 And He sat down opposite the treasury, and began observing how

the people were putting money into the treasury; and many rich people

were putting in large sums. 42 A poor widow came and put in two small

copper coins, which amount to a cent. 43 Calling His disciples to Him,

He said to them, “Truly I say to you, this poor widow put in more than

all the contributors to the treasury; 44 for they all put in out of their

surplus, but she, out of her poverty, put in all she owned, all she had to

live on.”

29 “If your right eye makes you stumble, tear it out and throw it from

you; for it is better for you to lose one of the parts of your body, than for

your whole body to be thrown into hell. 30 “If your right hand makes

you stumble, cut it off and throw it from you; for it is better for you to

lose one of the parts of your body, than for your whole body to go into

hell.

Do not love the world nor the things in the world. If anyone loves the

world, the love of the Father is not in him.
