I don’t want it analyzed. It is beyond verbal expression.”

Piotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky1840-1893

Tchaikovsky’s Life Tchaikovsky was a very creative child who loved

practicing piano! He liked to listen to tunes and then play them by ear. His love of practice worried his mother and governess, who thought that he was not spending enough time outside playing. They had to make him leave the piano playing. They had to make him leave the piano to go play outside with the other children!

When he was 10 years old, Peter was sent to school to train for work in government. He was unable to take piano lessons during this time but, at age 14, following his mother’s death, he began lessons again.

Tchaikovsky’s Life Tchaikovsky composed part-time for

awhile after taking a government job. Eventually, he quit that job to compose full-time.

During this time, he became a teacher at the Moscow Conservatory and got married. Tchaikovsky was unhappy in his marriage and tried to kill himself.

Tchaikovsky’s Life

Swan LakeSwan Lake has a complex past, as outlined in your teacher handbook. The idea of swan maidens was popular at the time but the original work was ill-received, resulting in multiple revisions over the years. The version commonly revisions over the years. The version commonly performed today was created in 1895, though the ballet premiered in 1877.

Swan Lake: Prelude to Act IIIAt the symphony, you will hear the music that opens Act III.

The prince has returned to the castle to attend the ball where he must declare who he will marry. Earlier in the ballet, he fell in love with Odette, who had been turned into a white swan by Rothbart, an evil genius. Rothbart wants the prince to marry his daughter, Odile. He sends her to the the prince to marry his daughter, Odile. He sends her to the ball dressed like a black swan. The prince mistakes her for Odette and declares he will marry her. After the declaration, he sees Odette and realizes he has been tricked into making a mistake.

For a little comic relief…

Ludwig von Beethoven(1770 – 1827)

Beethoven’s Life Beethoven was from a musical family and grew up

surrounded by music. He began studying the piano at age 4 and, shortly thereafter, the violin. His father forced him to practice at odd hours. Beethoven, however, wanted to be allowed to play outside and enjoy a “normal” life. He thought practicing was punishment!

When he practiced, Beethoven enjoyed improvising and When he practiced, Beethoven enjoyed improvising and creating new music. His father told him he would never amount to anything if he did not practice what was on the page instead of improvising.

Beethoven’s teacher and father would wake him up in the middle of the night to practice and have lessons. Because of this odd practice schedule, Beethoven was often very sleepy during school and frequently fell asleep during class. He eventually dropped out of school by the age of 11.

Beethoven’s Composing Life Beethoven published his first composition, 9 Variations on a

March Theme, when he was 11 years old. The pieces were actually revisions of his original work, which his teacher said he must revise because they did not follow the rules of composition.

Beethoven had composed several pieces prior to the publication of this set of pieces. They were too hard for publication of this set of pieces. They were too hard for him to play but he told his teachers he would grow into them!

Beethoven used money from his musical jobs to help support his family so he was unable to save much money to travel and study. It is said that once he dropped a penny while putting his money away and composed a piece called “Anger Over a Lost Penny.”
