Despite two key losses to grad-uation, new Eldred Head

Football Coach Mike Hoover isoptimistic about the upcomingseason.

“We lost several seniors, includ-ing Andrew Margorum and RJField, who are playing collegefootball at Hartwick College thisyear. They provided leadership toour team.

“Our goal is to stay together andwin Section IX. We have a stronggroup of players that have severalyears of experience.”

Out of those, he mentioned twotalented and experienced seniors,Nik Dilles and Julian Gottlieb.Juniors Nick Warren, Nick Bang-hart, and Taylor Warren shouldprovide leadership as well. Theoffensive line is anchored by vet-erans Alex Negulici and AndrewKougher.

Coach Hoover concluded by say-ing, “We have a dedicated group ofplayers who are going to playhard.”

Eldred girls’ soccer team has a newcoach this season. JJ Gass, who’s

been coaching the school’s boys’ soc-cer team, moved to guide the girlsafter the previous coach left. He’s also

the school’s physical educationteacher.

He talked to the Democrat prior tothe season about his thoughts andexpectations for the coming season.

“We lost seven seniors from lastyear’s team to graduation,” herecounted. “Out of those, we lost a bigchunk of our defense and some scor-ing. What we mainly lost was theleadership the seniors from last yearbrought to the team.”

Coach Gass said that despite thelosses, he believes in the team. Andalthough there’s a mix of experiencedand newer players in the team, hesaid he’s aiming high.

“So far we have shown the ability toplay together as a team, and if wecontinue to do this, the expectationsare very high. Making the sectiontournament is our goal becauseonce you get into the tourna-ment anything can hap-pen,” he commented.

He thinks there’senough talent for theschool to do well,explaining, “This yearwe have a good blend ofyoung and seasonedplayers.”

He concluded by sayingthat some of the key playersreturning to this year’s team areJenna Burns, Angie Schadt, RebeccaMorgan, Shannon Brucher, MelissaMcMonagle, and Lyndzee Kelty.

Eldred boys’ soccer coach SoniaKidney is busy training this year’s

team. Boys’ soccer is gaining in popu-larity and there was a record sign-upthis year.

“The Eldred boys’ soccer programhas grown this year,” said coach Kid-ney. “We have the most boys we haveever had.”

Several players were lost to gradua-tion from last year’s team, but there isa mixture of seasoned players andnewcomers to keep an eye on.

“Watch out for Peter Vorstadt,Francesco Meredino, and SebastianSchadt. We have an awesome teamon defense as well,” Kidney com-mented.

She ended by saying, “With 28 play-ers, we are hoping to have a success-ful season. The team is young withonly six seniors to lead them.”

The Fallsburg varsity girls’ soccer isready for another strong season.

Although the loss of seven seniorsto graduation may take some adjust-

ing, the girls don’t have many worries. The Lady Comets have a very large

team this fall, 14 of whom are juniorsand seniors. The squad has a lot ofleadership and cohesiveness and is

rich with talent. The team is also looking to its first

year with cheerleaders. It shouldbring out a lot more support andencourage school spirit.

A rebuildingyear with

promise forgirls’ soccer

While Jennifer Gorr is new as acoach for the Livingston Manor

girls’ soccer team, she’s no stranger tomany of the players. She’s previouslybeen Manor’s junior varsity coach.The previous coach Shirley Davisretired from coaching.

From last season’s team whichmade it all the way to the Regionalquarterfinals, the Sections, 10 seniorshave graduated.

The key players this year are return-ing seniors Ami Calo and FarrahMills. Ami will no longer be the goaliebut on the field to help lead the team.With her speed and ball handlingskills, Farrah will be on the front line.

Another player returning from lastyear’s team is talented sophomoreAnnaliese Gorr, who as a freshmanwas one of the leading scorers.

The two new goalies are AshlynneRatner and Tara Roser (a returningplayer from JV).

Coach Gorr continued, “On thedefense, the key players are JordyneShaver, Devon Dutcher, Ta-ShuanaWest who work well together andhelp protect the goal. They are alsoaggressive and fast.”

Coach Gorr concluded, “This is a

rebuilding year, but I still feel confi-dent in my team. I have a lot of talentfrom the girls returning from varsityand those I brought up my JV teamwho work well together and bring alot of support to the talent we alreadyhave.”

‘We are looking forward toan exciting season,” long-time head coach Fred

Ahart said about his RoscoeDownsville Bluedevils squad. “Wehave a lot of returnees and some newplayers to fill in the gaps.

“We will take this season one gameat a time,” he said.

Ahart said the team had good num-

bers with 27 players dressing for thefirst game.

Besides players from Roscoe andDownsville, three Livingston Manorplayers joined the team.

The Bluedevils will travel to Eldredtonight to take on the Yellowjacketsin the first Class D game for bothschools. Roscoe/Downsville will alsocompete with Chester and PinePlains in their Division.

Liberty coach John Wilhelmmaintains the same goal eachand every season for his Indians

squad: “Get back to the playoffs.”Last season Liberty finished 6-4 (3-

1) Class C Division I and lost the Sec-tion IX championship game againstleague foe James I. O’Neill.

But the Indians have suffered somevery key losses to graduation. Thoselosses include the do-it-all RyanHenry – the Sullivan County Democ-rat’s Player of the Year last season –and a host of other impact players likerunning back Kenny Jaycox; defen-sive end Tony Saravia; linebackerAndrew Martinez and cornerbackAtwoun Ackerley. So has Wilhelm’sgoal changed this season?

“No way.”With a strong roster of returning

athletes, including senior doublethreat quarterback Quinn Jackson,senior defensive lineman JuliusGraves, running back Jericho Male,sophomore running back and line-backer Kevin Morgans and more,Wilhelm has a strong core to workwith in a decidedly tough division.

A surprise addition, though, may bea boon to the Indians: that of formerFallsburg tailback Shakree Gibson,who led all Sullivan County rusherswith 1,039-yards on just 124 carries;an impressive 8.4-yard-per-carryaverage for a Fallsburg team that, inits third year of existence won its firstever contest last season.

“I’m excited to see what we can doout there,” says Wilhelm. “I thinkwe’ve got a great chance to competeagain in Class C.”

The boys’ soccer team startedlast season with a bang, going5-0 and riding this momentum

to sectionals, where it suffered aheartbreaking 2-1 loss to Spackenkill.

“We definitely had a sold 2012 sea-son,” said coach Debbie Simpson.Though the team lost eight seniorsfrom last year’s squad to graduation,including star striker Pedro Garcia –now playing at SUNY Orange –Simpson says, “We’ve got a few new-comers who I think will go a longways toward rounding us out as ateam.”

One key player who will be back onthe field for the Indians this season issenior goalkeeper Julian Spina, whodominated in the net last season.

Added Simpson, “We have an ener-getic team that works well togetherand hard in practice. We are lookingto be competitive in all our games,have a winning season, and hopeful-ly earn a repeat trip to sectional play.”

The Liberty girls’ soccer squad fin-ished with a more than respectable9-5-1 overall record last season, the

highlight of which, said coach AnnRamos, “Had to be our 6-4 win over JohnS. Burke Catholic in our final home matchlast season. It was a league match andagainst a longtime rival… It was huge forus”.

The team saw five seniors depart fromlast year’s iteration, and Ramos admitted,

“This will be a rebuilding year in somerespects.”

With six seniors – led by team captainsMelissa Symanski and Jayco Krebs – andsix juniors returning, along with the addi-tion of seven underclassmen to bolsterthe team’s core, the 2013 Lady Indiansmay have some surprises in store for thecompetition.

“We’re just looking to come out andcompete and get better each match as theseason progresses,” added Ramos.

MONTICELLO — Monticello gradBryan Astras is entering his secondseason as the boys’ varsity headcoach.

The team is “a group of kids loadedwith talent and potential,” he said,but they did suffer a loss of their threesenior captains Georgios Astras,Austin Colon, and Andrew Krotje,who graduated.

With many returning seniors thisyears who know the skills and severalunderclassmen coming up from JVwho are eager to learn these skills,there season promises for nothingbut success.

With intramurals being held duringthe offseason, the boys have beenplaying all year to keep up their skillsand keep them elite and focused forwhen they season came around.

Head coach Louis Velasco and thegirls only have one thing on their mindfor the season and that’s making sec-tionals.

With captains and seniors MaraResnick and Katrina Zicot leading theteam they expect nothing less thanvictory.

Kicking this season off with a winagainst Sullivan West wasn’t a bad wayto start either. There are over 20 girlson the team and, with strength innumbers, the Lady Panthers shouldhave no problem carrying themselvesto sections for the second year in a row.

MONTICELLO — After a rough sea-son last year, The Monticello varsityfootball team is prepared to redeemthemselves after their 2-7 record lastyear.

Last year was also Monticello’s firstyear not making sectionals since thefootball program was brought back in2008. The loss of the team’s seniorcaptains Jake McLachlan and MistahAlli will definitely prove to be difficultbut not impossible.

Leading this year’s squad are cap-tains Terry Duncan, JonathanHarned, Courtney “CJ” Forest andLondon Gandy and although thePanthers have a young team, it ispacked with determination and tal-ent.

With optional practices and weighttraining going on all year, Head CoachMatthew Buddenhagen is also mak-ing sure his team is top condition forgame time.

‘Alot depends on how much weimprove,” Sullivan West HeadCoach Ron Bauer said in

assessing this year’s Sullivan WestBulldog football squad. “We have atough schedule and some peopleneed to step up to replace a few ofthe kids we lost [to graduation].”

Replacing Sawyer Erlwein (QB, LB)is the first task at hand and currentlyJunior Richard Shevak looks to bestepping into that role. Also lost tograduation was a handful of line-men, including Scott Herbert, ScottErdman, Blane Reddish and JoeSchroeder. Wide out Brad Hemmeralso went on to college.

Coach Bauer is counting on theseniors and juniors to fill the void leftby those players.

“We have a lot of good athletes whoneed to step up and get the job

done,” he said.Senior Jared Meola anchored the

running game last season and wasalso a double threat returning kick-offs and punts. Other seniors includelineman Devin Mirch, tight endsCody Franskevicz and ZachO’Connor, Jake Murphy and run-ning back/lineman Travis Roeder.

Juniors who should contribute thisyear include tackle Anthony Rydell,running back Andrew Stabbert, andtwo-way linemen Sean and KevinHart.

“It’s going to be a tough season,”Coach Bauer said. “We have

Millbrook and Liberty in our divisionand they are both tough teams. Wehope to keep improving and be com-petitive.”

Following an opening week defeatto John S. Burke the Bulldogs have aweek off before they travel to Eldredfor another non-league game. They

then open their league schedule onthe road for the second straight yearat Millbrook on Friday, September 27at 7 p.m.

They are then home on Friday,October 4 versus rival Liberty underthe lights in Lake Huntingston.

With just 16 players on thevarsity soccer squad, HeadCoach Debbie Owen said,

“It’s definitely a rebuilding year.”In fact, Sullivan West incorporated

the jayvee and varsity squads togeth-er in order to field a team.

“We only have two seniors, GavinOwen and Owen Andrews,” she said.“We have a lot of juniors who haven’tbeen with us before.”

Coming off an 8-9 season last year,which saw the Bulldogs make the sec-tionals, Owen said the team was hurtby graduation, losing Richard Lan-der, Eli Vaknin, Greg Stevenson,Andrew Siegel, Adam Murphy andRyan Feeney. Sullivan West will com-pete in Division IV, Class B with JohnS. Burke, James I. O’Neill, Liberty andFallsburg central schools.

Fresh off the Jane Flannery Tourna-ment in Downsville, the Lady Bull-dogs lost to Roscoe in the first roundand then came back to beat Waltonfor a third place finish.

“We are stressing conditioning aswell as skills,” Ellmauer said. “Thenumbers are nice, we have a lot ofgirls out this year.

“We are not the biggest team, butmaybe the quickest.”

Ellmauer said the team would beled by seniors Mary Ann Durkin,Hayley Puerschner, Krista Herbertand Jasmine Davis.

Carly Grishaber, who had a break-away goal versus Roscoe, is also athreat as well as Jasmina Mujanovic.

“And senior Syndey Sipple willhelp,” Ellmauer said.

Tri-Valley was a pesky, toughcompetitor in last season fin-ishing 4-5 overall and 2-2 in

Class C Division II. Coach John Rusin is back for his

eighth year at the Bear’s helm to leada team that’s lost key players, at verykey spots. Offensive lineman/defen-sive tackle Eric Boyes, who was anall-section pick is gone, as are full-back Brenden Tierney; tailback CodyExner, offensive lineman JohnAnzano and quarterback ShatikSmith.

Fortunately Rusin has some strongathletes who saw quite a bit of timeon the field returning; ball playerslike junior halfback/cornerbackJustin Swarthout who will be liningup under the center this season. Tri-Valley also returns hard-running full-back, senior Jesus Lozada, junior tail-back Jared James and line specialist,junior Donovan Flores. Anotherplayer to watch – and who, as aneighth-grader last season, playedsome tough football – is freshmanoffensive lineman/defensive linemanEverett Nolan.

If you didn’t see many seniors onthat list that’s because there aren’tmany. “We’re a very young team,”offered Rusin.

And after an early season 34-15 lossto Division I Onteora, it looks to be arebuilding year for the Bears.

“We’re going to go out there andplay better each and every game,”said Rusin. “Less than that would beunacceptable.”
