“Love does not begin and end the way we seem to think it does. Love is a battle, love is a war; love is a growing up.” - James Baldwin

Every writer has a unique voice, as distinctive as a fingerprint. In this course we will focus on finding, sharpening and shaping our writing voices. As we do so, we will read works of fiction and nonfiction by authors who write about relationships –family, romance, friendship, obsession, rivalry, and even some kinds of relationships that defy definition– with a particular focus on writings about very long and very short relationships. We will read a variety of authors including James Baldwin, Maya Angelou, Flannery O’Connor and Franz Kafka, paired with helpful essays on the craft of writing by Octavia Butler, Walter Mosley, John Gardner, and others. Experimental writing exercises will be inspired by our weekly readings. Workshops will focus on positive, helpful feedback. Open to all.

Peter Josyh

How to portray the life and work of a visual artist on screen has always been an exacting and elusive challenge for filmmakers. As a painter, writer, and award-winning filmmaker, Peter Josyph will lead an exploration into the most interesting films that have attempted this difficult task. Combining lesser-known works with award-winning classics, Part I of this course features David Hockney in Philip Haas’s seldom-seen A Day On The Grand Canal With The Emperor Of China; Martin Provost’s true story of Séraphine, a French orphan who became a domestic and a self-taught painter of exceptional vision and ability; painter-filmmaker Julian Schnabel’s recent tribute to the life of Vincent Van Gogh, At Eternity’s Gate; an intimate look at the daily life of a great Paris Museum in Nicholas Philibert’s beautiful Louvre City; Raymond Teller’s chronicle of inventor Tim Jenison’s attempt to duplicate a Vermeer in Tim’s Vermeer; and Christian Frei’s Oscar-nominated documentary about photographer James Nachtwey called War Photographer.

Margaret Hallissy

On “first Fridays” of each month, Professor Hallissy will lead a group of devoted readers in an informed, guided discussion of one book which follows a selected thread chosen for these sessions. This Fall that common thread for all four books is ART, which should be especially appropos for the inaugural season of The Frick Estate Lectures:

Friday 9/6 The Blazing World by Siri Hustvedt (9781476747248), a tale of “art world gender bias,” according to New York Times reviewer Fernanda Eberstadt, is set in the late twentieth century and focuses on the aptly-named Harriet Burden, who bears the burden of being a woman in a man’s world. Friday 10/4 The Art Forger by Barbara Shapiro (9781616203160) is based on the famous theft of art works from the Isabella Stewart Gardner museum in Boston, a crime which is as yet unsolved. “An engaging tale about art, cupidity, and a Faustian bargain” (Boston Globe reviewer Kathryn Lang), the novel is a window into the world of valuable yet vulnerable art collections.

Friday 11/1 How to Be Both by Ali Smith (9780307275257) puts an innovative spin on historical fiction. According to Guardian reviewer Laura Miller, the novel consists of two parts, one set in fifteenth-century Italy, and one in the recent past; either part can be read first, and both focus on “the life of an itinerant painter of the early Renaissance,” Francesco del Cossa.

Friday 12/6 The Masterpiece by Fiona Davis (9781524742959), like the author’s earlier novels, centers on “the private lives of those who live and work in New York’s most intriguing buildings” (Kirkus Review), this time Grand Central Station, which once housed an art school. The protagonist, like the defunct art school and the terminal itself, has “seen better days” and needs restoration.

Considered by many to be one of the great masterpieces written by Charles Dickens, David Copperfield traces the adventures of the titular character as he develops from an impoverished childhood to adulthood. Written in an autobiographical format, the novel treats the themes of memory and identity while also exploring important social questions of the time such as the exploitation of children, marriage, emigration to Australia, and class conflict. We will read the Penguin edition of the work.

Despite centuries of constant change in the creation and appreciation of art, the aesthetic principles of Classical Greece have proven to be incredibly durable. From Imperial Rome to the Renaissance to French Neoclassicism to the present day, Classical methods and ideas have provided a common thread linking centuries of artistic endeavor. This series of slide-lectures will explore both celebrated and reviled Classical "rebirths," and will look at the various cultural and political contexts in which they developed.

Marc Courade

This course will examine musicals by masters of the genre, Cole Porter, George and Ira Gershwin and Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart. The 1930s were still the era of Musical Comedy, with weak books and silly plots. Some shows, however, pushed boundaries and paved the way to Musical Theater. Many of them are no longer viable, or their books have been reworked for modern audiences. However, the craft of the music and lyrics has made the songs survive, preserving the legacy of these works.

Bob Brier

The Great Pyramid of Giza is one of the unsolved mysteries of all time. Egyptologists simply do not know how ancient builders raised thousands of 2-ton blocks to the top of the 480-foot pyramid. This lecture presents a radical new theory and the recently discovered evidence concerning these questions.

For years, French architect, Jean-Pierre Houdin worked in isolation in a one-room flat in Paris with nothing but his computer and the most detailed blueprints of the Pyramid ever drawn. In 2003 he contacted Egyptologist Bob Brier and the two began working together to find evidence for his theory – that hidden inside the pyramid is a mile-long ramp that is still there, waiting to be discovered. In the course of their explorations in Egypt, they uncovered a room 275 feet up the pyramid, never mentioned in the Egyptological literature. Houdin, working with Dassault Systemes in Paris, was also able to demonstrate that the Great Pyramid cracked as it was being built, and to pinpoint precisely when and why.

This illustrated lecture presents the internal ramp theory and the evidence for it, including the first photographs of the room high up on the Pyramid’s northeastern corner. This research was the subject of a National Geographic Channel TV special. The lecture will update work on the theory, including the most recent 2018 examination of the Great Pyramid using cosmic rays.

Bob Brier is recognized as one of the world's foremost Egyptologists. As Senior Research Fellow at the Post Campus of Long Island University, he conducts pioneering research in mummification practices and has investigated some of the world’s most famous mummies, including King Tut, Vladimir Lenin, Ramses the Great, Eva Peron (Evita), Marquise Tai (Chinese noblewoman), and the Medici family of Renaissance Italy. In 1994 Dr. Brier became the first person in 2,000 years to mummify a human cadaver using the exact techniques of the ancient Egyptians. This research was the subject of a National Geographic TV special titled Mr. Mummy. He was the host of several award-winning television specials for TLC, including Pyramids, Mummies & Tombs and Mummy Detective. More recently, National Geographic TV presented his research in a documentary called “Secret of the Great Pyramid” discussing a new theory of how the Great Pyramid of Giza was built. Dr. Brier’s research has been featured in such media venues as CNN, 60 Minutes, and The New York Times. His most recent book is: Cleopatra’s Needles: The Lost Obelisks of Egypt. (Bloomsbury 2016)

In the culture wars of the 80s and 90s, protests against art tended to come from social conservatives and the religious right. In the first decades of the 21st Century, protests have increasingly come from the Progressive Left; museums and galleries have been targeted based on issues of gentrification, museum trustees, and gender representation in artworks. This slide-lecture course will explore the increasing politicization of art spaces and art discourse while considering the question: Is the advancement of Progressive politics always good for art?

Global politics and economics are going through times of intense change — old power structures and alignments are eroding and a new kind of world is emerging. Unexpected developments in Asia, Latin America and Africa challenge traditional centers of global strength in America and Europe. The Middle East seems on the brink of increased conflict worsened by humanitarian tragedy. Can violence be contained? Trade wars and technology advances disrupt the old economic order. Now, the rise of China and the aggressive policies of Russia challenge the West - how will America, the European Union and their ally Japan react? How will disturbing situations like Iran, North Korea and Venezuela play into the emerging global balance of power? Will new regional imperatives affect Israel and its future? What is the impact on the non-Western world? As the Trump regime drastically reshapes foreign policy, can America maintain its global position? What new instruments and forces will underwrite the coming era in world affairs? Who will be winners and losers? This ALL NEW series of letures discusses these and other key questions in the context of current world affairs.

The rapid evolution of Modernist art -which saw movements as varied as Fauvism, Cubism, Surrealism, Abstract Expressionism, and Pop Art- produced a wide array of towering artistic talents. For some critics, artists like Pablo Picasso, Georgia O'Keefe, Marcel Duchamp, Jackson Pollack, and Andy Warhol defined the 20th Century; for others, the greatest achievements of Modernism have yet to be fully appreciated, with artists such as Francis Bacon, Hilma af Klint, Jack Whitten, Robert Mapplethorpe, or Lee Krasner being seen as increasingly important. This course will explore a wide range of artistic achievements (both well-known and barely-known) in an effort to address a possibly unanswerable question: Who is the greatest 20th Century artist?

Adapting the structure of the hero’s quest in her treatment of Janie Crawford, Zora Neale Hurston crafts one of the great masterpieces of twentieth-century African-American fiction. Innovative and ahead of its time for the way in which it positions a female character as the mythic hero, Hurston’s novel is considered one of the foundational texts for later writers such as Alice Walker and Toni Morrison. The Cheops Boat is the most complete, largest, and among the oldest boats excavated, but it has received surprisingly little study. Since its discovery in 1954, there has been speculation about its original design, means of propulsion, and its purpose, but as far as we know, there has been no experimentation to help answer these questions. In this lecture, Dr. Brier presents the results of the first tank testing of a model of the Cheops Boat and some preliminary conclusions about the design, propulsion and function of the original. Brier will also discuss his plans to build a full-scale replica and place it on the Nile.

Carol Tabler

Join us for an in-depth discussion of Van Gogh’s paintings of wheat fields, a motif he explored in 1890 while living in the town of Auvers during the last months of his life.

These paintings of nature, infused with a dynamic energy expressed through brilliant color and bold brush strokes, have the power to enthrall us with the same emotional resonance felt by the artist himself. They embody moments of epiphany at odds juxtaposed against the idea of the suicidal artist.

Carol Tabler holds a PhD from the Institute of Fine Arts at NYU and has served as curator for numerous galleries and museums. She has also presented at prestigious institutions such as the Frick, where she most recently spoke on Antoine Vollon.

Dr. Tabler, considered to be the preeminent Vollon scholar, is familiar with little-known aspects of the career of this nineteenth-century artist who was a still-life specialist with a passion for landscape. She is also widely published in the area of Art History.
