Fall Fundraising Banquet for

Mission Support

Founder of Crescent Project to be Keynote Speaker

Saturday, September 19, 6:45-8:30pm

Members and friends of Prince of Peace are invited to a special evening on Saturday, September 19, from 6:45 – 8:30 p.m. at Prince of Peace. This will be a Fall Fundraising Banquet to support Yvette Moy, who is mobilizing and equipping Christians in the Washington, D.C. metro area to share the hope of Christ with Muslims through Crescent Project (www.crescentproject.org).

Yvette Moy, familiar to many at PoP, serves as Crescent Project’s Metro D.C. area coordinator. She has been involved with Lutheran outreach to Muslims since 2009. Her greatest joy is to equip congregations and individuals to share the Gospel with their Muslim friends and neighbors, and to fulfill Christ’s great commission to make disciples of all nations. Yvette has served on a variety of local and district boards and committees, and received the Southeastern District’s Servant of Christ award in 2015.

The banquet will feature Fouad Masri, founder of Crescent Project (www.crescentproject.org), as the keynote speaker. Author and lecturer Fouad Masri was born and raised in the war zone of Beirut, Lebanon. As a third generation pastor, he has a passion for sharing the love of Christ with Muslims and has spent most of his life doing just that. After coming to the United States to attend seminary, Fouad realized the urgency for teaching American Christians to reach out to the growing population of internationals, particularly Muslims. In 1993, he founded Crescent Project to nurture transformational relationships between Christians and Muslims and overcome misconceptions about Islam and Christianity.

Project Hope Shoe Drive

It’s that time of year again! Last year, the Project Hope Shoe Drive was a wonderful success thanks to all of you, and I can’t wait to see what this year has in store. The shoes donated in the drive will be repurposed for individuals and families to create micro-enterprise opportunities in developing countries like Haiti, Uganda, and India. Secondhand shoes help impoverished people to grow an enterprise to support their families. I will be gathering shoes from September-November and I need your help!

How to donate:

Collect any spare shoes into the bag (old, new, big, small; any shoe, any condition are welcome!) Drop them off at the box in the Narthex. Questions? Contact me, Lindsey Otto @ 703-554-3002 Or [email protected]

Opportunity to Sponsor Village of Hope Student

Village of Hope Enrichment Team 2015 returned to the U.S. with wonderful memories of their teaching experiences. We hope the article and photos provided by Michigan teammate Kathy Adams gave you a more intimate picture of how this week is a learning marathon. Prince of Peace team members included Tom Lambiase, Michelle Heinitz and her mom, Liz Murphy. To find out about serving on next July’s team, please contact Marni Maree, VOH Board Member, Enrichment Team Leader, and member of Peace Lutheran Church, Alexandria at [email protected]. Tom, Michelle, sister Natalie, and Liz have served on this team multiple years and would also love to share their experiences with anyone wanting to know more about the experience.

Partly as a result of these members’ visits and many others, more students have become sponsored. The PoP Men’s Bible Study group, of which Tom is an active participant, currently sponsors two students. Michelle’s family, and other PoP members also sponsor students. As a sponsor, you would be making it possible for a child to attend the school, receive text books, school supplies, a daily meal, vitamin and medical care (at the on-site VOH Health Clinic). Every year, 40 new students begin classes at the Village of Hope. Parents also play a role in this important job of educating their child by paying a small annual fee to attend the school and to cover the cost of shoes and a uniform. Thank you to everyone who collected, folded, cut and packed plastic bags for my plastic bag crochet class! Students made strapped purses, hanging plant baskets and jump ropes. Students had plenty of plastic to take home with them to complete a sleeping mat as well.

“Let my teaching fall like rain and my words descend like dew, like showers on new grass, like abundant rain on tender plants.” Deut.32:2 Liz Murphy [email protected]

To find out more about serving on next July’s team, please

Servant of Christ Award

Recognition During 11am Service, Sunday, August 30 Every year, many members of Prince of Peace demonstrate the love of Jesus through

extraordinary acts of service in the church, the community, and at home. Again this year, we are singling out a few lay members for special recognition for their faithful service to the Lord. The recognition is called the Servant of Christ Award. We do this not only to thank them for their service, but to encourage everyone who labors along with them in the Lord’s vineyard by holding them up as examples of His Spirit at work among us. God is at work wherever acts of love and kindness are done in His name. Although we name only a few, the Lord sees and knows all, remembers all, and promises a far greater reward than our recognition to all who serve his people.

The Board of Servant Leaders has chosen, for the Servant of Christ Award, three couples who have faithfully served in many roles at Prince of Peace over many years: Congratulations to Dave & Carolyn Thomas, Bill & Eileen Douglas and Hoppy & Chris Hohenstein! We will formally recognize them during our 11 a.m. worship service on Sunday, August 30. May the Lord, who has begun a good work in them, bring it to completion at the day of the Lord Jesus Christ.

Lay Candidates Solicited to Represent

Church Circuit at National Convention

Circuit 9-A of the Southeastern District will elect one lay delegate and one pastoral delegate to represent the circuit churches at the 65th Convention of The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod, which will be held July 9-14, 2016, in Milwaukee. The election will be held at a Circuit Forum on Thursday, October 1 (7:30 p.m.) at St. John’s in Franconia. Please give thoughtful and prayerful consideration about individuals, both men and women, who would be willing to serve as lay delegate and alternate lay delegate and submit your nomination to the church office or Pastor Gnewuch no later than September 15, 2015. The national convention of The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod will afford an opportunity for worship, nurture and inspiration, fellowship, and the communication of vital information. The convention is the principal legislative assembly, which amends the Constitution and Bylaws, considers and takes action on reports and overtures, and handles appropriate appeals. The convention establishes general positions and policies of the Synod, provides overall program direction and priorities, and conducts business in order to provide responsible service for, and on behalf of, the members of the Synod.

Thrivent Education Event

Friday, September 11 6:30-8:30pm Prince of Peace Fellowship Hall Thrivent will be hosting an Education Event to discuss Thrivent Action Teams and how PoP and its organizations can use Action Teams to make a difference in raising funds for the congregation and the community. Meeting will begin with dinner of pizza and salad at 6:30 p.m. If attending event, please RSVP by Tuesday, Sept 1st to Leon Debolt @ [email protected], 202-264-0113.

Faith Stories

Sharing your faith story is an integral component in living out your faith. Your individual story makes up the greater story—the story of God’s redeeming his people for himself. Our stories encourage other believers while God also uses them to reach those not yet connected to him.

I had an interesting conversation with my hair dresser. Our conversation, which included speaking about God, also included sharing our concern for vulnerable children and I shared briefly the early 20th century work of Amy Car, an ideal missionary in Southern Indiana.

You can share your stories by writing them in the “Friendship Folder” at any worship service, or post your story as a comment on the http://popfaithstories.wordpress.com , or by sending an e-mail to [email protected].
