YOUR NEXTCAREER MOVE?

How Granite State Can Help

Sandra uses Career Services to chart her next career move

When the surge of digital marketing appeared in the late 2000s, it revolutionized how brands connect with people and customers. Sandra Hickey of Farmington, New Hampshire, was working as an administrative assistant at the time. She was curious and wanted to understand the power of these marketing techniques and apply them on the job.

At work, I managed the website and I started to learn more about graphic design. At the time, I wanted to start a Facebook page and I really advocated for it because I knew it would help gain more interest in the programs. My employer was skeptical and unsure of the value that social media could offer the organization. Once we started to dive in, it raised awareness about our programs and events, and we saw the benefits.

Recognizing that skills in digital marketing would become increasingly important, Sandra wanted to learn more. She applied for professional development grants through her employer in order to pursue specialized training in graphic design and website development.

What began as an interest soon grew into a passion. Sandra began to wonder how she could incorporate what she was learning into her next career move.

I applied to jobs related to digital marketing but I didn’t have much success. I strategized about the ways that I could become more competitive for the type of positions that I wanted. I looked at Granite State to see if the college offered a program that might lead me in the right direction. That’s when I found the digital and social media degree. It seemed like a perfect fit!

With a vision for her future career and a degree program that matched her goals, Sandra was well on her way. Outside of her studies, she sought opportunities to further hone her skills by keeping a personal blog, writing a self-published novel, and providing freelance graphic design services.

When she received an email about career services at Granite State, it caught her attention immediately and she called her advisor to learn more. Sandra’s advisor recommended the course APST 505 Career Development and Life Planning, which introduced her to a range of tactics and resources that could help

her work towards major career goals.

It was a huge advantage to have this available to me as a student, so I could incorporate it as part of my overall degree plan and goals. I knew that outside of Granite State, a comparable course offered by a company would be yet another commitment on top of working full-time and finishing my degree.

The Career Development and Life Planning class uses self-assessment, career research, decision making, goal setting, and job search strategies to engage participants in their career development and life planning process. Going into the course, Sandra expected to learn how to craft a cover letter and fine tune her resume.

Before the course, I figured my resume was fine. It just wasn’t great. What

I realized is that there’s kind of a science behind putting together your resume. I was pleasantly surprised to learn that there were things I could do to make immediate improvements that I have since applied to my resume,

like using more action verbs. It was something that I

was missing before, so it was a great

take-away.

There were also a few unexpected lessons learned along Sandra’s journey.

The most beneficial thing I got out of the experience was realizing there were other ways to gain experience.

I felt so stuck. I wondered, “How can I gain experience if I can’t get the job. What options are there for me when I already work full time?”

The course was taught by Jan Coville, the Director of Career Services at Granite State College. She gave Sandra a variety of examples that helped her find ways to gain experience on her own time, including volunteer positions and internships.

Jan actually continued to keep in touch with me. She knew my goals and would email me on a regular basis if she found something that she thought would be appropriate for me.

Through this support, Sandra connected with opportunities at two organizations, both of which gave her the flexibility to contribute remotely from home on her own time. Sandra is currently getting experience at a local nonprofit where she serves as a graphic designer, creating their marketing collateral. In addition, she works on projects for the Marketing Department at the College, contributing to blog.granite.edu and helping to conceptualize various marketing campaigns.

By finishing her B.S. in Digital and Social Media and gaining relevant job experience along the way, Sandra’s goal is to land a job in communications and marketing that uses her social media, writing, and graphic design skills.
