Carolina Day School Chess Class Your children with have fun learning the game of chess!!

Chess will improve their analytical skills!!

● The 2015-2016 CDS chess class begins on Monday 9/21. ● We meet every Monday from 3:10-4:10 pm. ● The class run from Sept 21-April 25, and meets every Monday that CDS is open for a full day. Note: this schedule differs from other after school activities, which run only for a few weeks. ● Cost--$250 for the full year, or $125 for fall semester (Sept-Dec). ● Class format--The students will receive instruction for ½ of the class, and will play chess for ½ of the class. ● Tournaments—Students have the opportunity to play in several tournaments during the year in the Asheville area. These range from fun tournaments such as the Halloween tournament with prizes for the best costume, to the State Scholastic Championships in Winston-Salem Feb 20-21. Tournaments are optional, but encouraged. I understand that certain students may choose to not participate in a tournament, for any number of reasons. In general, “I’m not good enough” is NOT a valid reason to not participate in a tournament, as all scholastic tournaments have appropriate sections for beginners. ● Strategies and Tactics. Students will learn castling, en passant, checkmate and stalemate, checkmate patterns, opening strategies, endgame strategies, do worksheets, and analyze real life games. My teaching philosophy is to allow each student to succeed at their highest level. I also realize that chess class is not school, but a voluntary activity whose main purpose is for the participants to HAVE FUN. However, success at chess requires the students to pay attention to the lessons and to practice outside of class, either with friends or parents or siblings. I will give the students handouts explaining the basics that I am teaching. The youngest students will not be able to read all of the words in these handouts, and will need adult assistance to fully understand and reinforce what I am teaching. Parents are welcome to attend the classes, my teaching is not secret. Parents are also welcome to contact me with any concerns, after the class, or outside of class, or to discuss my chess teaching background of almost 20 years, and my teaching philosophy.
