Also, learn what goes on further below ground, and the future of the East Side Ac-cess for the Long Island RR.

Week 2. Art and Architecture of Grand Central Terminal: What is Beaux Arts architecture, and who were the designers and artists that made Grand Central Terminal one of New York City’s crown jewels?

Week 3. The Vanderbilts and the Grand Central characters of the Gilded Age: How did the son of a farmer from Staten Island build his empire, and THEN invest in Railroads when he should have been retiring? Learn about the Vanderbilts and the other Grand Central characters of the Gilded Age.

A Textual Survey of Second Temple JudaismDL93F20

The Second Temple, or the intertestamental period, was a seething incubator of Jewish sects and budding Christianity. This relatively short period (530 B.C.E to 70 C.E) had a profound and lasting impact on Western Civilization.

In an effort to understand its impact, the class will discuss colossal events, such as the Crucifixion of 800 Jews by a Jewish King and the visionary Dead Sea Scroll telling of an apocalyptic war between the sons of light and the son of darkness. Source texts written by esoteric scribes, eschatological prophets, Roman and Greek historians, adherents of the Jewish/Christian sect and, of course, Josephus Flavius (Joseph ben Matityahu) are used. Students may choose to receive the packet of source texts by email or post.

Ze’ev Aviezer earned a BA degree in economics from Hunter College, an MS degree in counseling from Lehman College CUNY and his MA degree in Religious Education from Hebrew Union College’s Institute of Religion. He was granted the only certification as an Adult Educator by Hebrew Union College.

Hasidim: Mysteries Unveiled DL67F20

Hasidism, “invented” by the Kabbalistic rabbi Ba’al Shem Tov in the 18th century, revolutionized Judaic practice in its time. It has since become a powerful movement, encompassing a number Ultra-Orthodox communities and yielding political influence beyond its numerical size.

Using source documents, the course ex-amines the history of Hasidim including its theology and isolationist communal lifestyle, its dynastic structure, and the destructive and sometimes violent internecine struggles used to maintain control over the Hasidic “court”.

Students will also learn about what life is like for those who choose to leave a Hassidic sect. Students may choose to receive the packet of source texts by email or post.

College Essay Boot Camp ONLINEPR65F20

As 4.0 GPAs have grown more common, the personal statement has become an important way to distinguish oneself in the college application process. That’s never been more important than for the Class of 2021, many of whom will apply to college without having taken an SAT or ACT. While the stakes of college essays are particularly high this fall, crafting an authentic personal statement can also catalyze an invaluable journey of self-discovery and identity-making for teens on the verge of adulthood.

However, since the personal statement differs profoundly from essays that students write in high school classes, many teens struggle through the process. College counselor, published author, and master teacher Dr. Dominique Padurano (Dr. P.) guides students through brainstorming, drafting, and polishing their personal statements.

Dominique Padurano, PhD, is the President and Head Coach of Crimson Coaching™. A magna cum laude graduate of Harvard College and a former teacher at Horace Mann and Scarsdale High Schools, Dr. P. has taught teens for over 20 years. Her own writing has been published in peer-reviewed books and journals, as well as in the popular press. As a college essay coach and teacher, she’s helped students gain admissions to Harvard, Princeton, and other top US colleges – as well as earn scholarships of $60,000 per year

Succeeding as a Distance Learner(Grades 6 – College)PR79F20

When classes went online in March 2020, many students floundered. Untethered from the daily structure of bells and teacher reminders, some forgot deadlines – others never even started schoolwork. The Center’s long-time “Study Skills and Time Management” Dr. P. (Dr. Dominique Padurano) has completely overhauled that popular course’s curriculum to help students achieve academic success in the era of distance learning.

Dr. P. teaches students how to make a daily schedule, bolster motivation, and use tech-nology to help rather than hinder their intel-lectual growth. She’ll also cover self-care strategies, reading critically, and studying techniques.

“Succeeding as a Distance Learner” will be taught via Zoom through a combination of lecture, group discussion, role-playing in breakout rooms, and “hands-on” activities with students’ own Google Classrooms and Calendars.
