The Boy with Big, Big FeelingsBritney Winn Lee • Illustrated by Jacob Souva
Meet a boy with feelings so big that they glow from his cheeks, spill out of his eyes, and jump up and down on his chest. When a loud truck drives by, he cries. When he hears a joke, he bursts with joy. When his loved ones are having a hard day, he feels their emotions as if they were his own. The boy tries to cope by stuffing down his feelings, but with a little help and artistic inspiration, the boy realizes his feelings are something to be celebrated. Written by debut picture-book author Britney Winn Lee and boldly illustrated by Jacob Souva, The Boy with Big, Big Feelings is relatable for any child, but especially for children experiencing anxiety and extreme emotions or who have been diagnosed with autism or as a Highly Sensitive Person.

When playing outside on the yellowest days,
A loud truck might rumble on by,

Would push feelings right out of his eyes!

On Your WayJohn Coy • Illustrated by Talitha Shipman
A tender look back at a child’s first steps, On Your Way is a celebration of growth, movement, and the importance of slowing down to observe life’s milestones both big and small. A mother recounts for her child “that day on the porch” when the child first tried to walk. As the child totters, stumbles, and flops, young animals nearby gallop, jump, waddle, and hop. Kids will delight in the child’s progress and think of the ways they’re still learning to grow and move every single day now that they’re on their way. A perfect book for looking back at how far kids have come...and how far they’ll go.

Provides engaging context to the stories of the New Testament
THE ROMAN ARMY A ROMAN CENTURIONThe Roman military was disciplined, dangerous, and impressive. From the time General Pompey conquered the region in 63 BCE until the Romans destroyed the Jerusalem Temple in 70 CE, the Roman military was visible throughout Palestine. Jesus’ whole life was spent in the presence of an occupying army of up to 150,000 fighting men, who reminded everybody of who was in charge.
Centurions were commanding officers. They were Roman citizens who made careers as tough soldiers who led by example. Centurions trained troops and commanded groups of eighty soldiers (a century). Centurions brought the powerful presence of the empire wherever they went.
In Palestine, senior centurions commanded 1,000 or so auxiliaries—soldiers who were recruited from Syria and Samaria. Centurions taught them how to be soldiers and enforced the rules of Roman military life—which sometimes included beating them with a cane made of vine wood.
Centurions in Judea were part of the elite class and often had families who lived with them. They were paid fifteen times what a regular soldier earned in a year. They were a big deal.

Sends readers back to the Bible with a new understanding of the first forty-six books
On smooth terrain, a chariot could move
nearly as fast as a galloping horse—almost 30 MPH!
THE CHARIOT 1450 BCE
The most powerful and feared weapon of war for more than a thousand years was the two-wheeled, horse-drawn chariot. Their speed, maneuverability, and ability to terrify foot soldiers made the chariot the weapon of choice—for those who could afford them. Powers such as Egypt and Assyria added chariot corps to their armies, and expanded their empires in every direction. Chariots were also prizes when captured in battle. Ancient war records include the number of chariots won from enemies.
This chariot is the Egyptian style of battle chariot, used around 1450 BCE. Horses, chariots, and the composite bow were introduced to Egypt only a few hundred years earlier, by a Semitic tribe called the Hyskos who came to live in Egypt around 1700 BCE. The Egyptians didn’t invent the chariot, but many think they came close to perfecting it.
In the Bible
• Joseph arrives in his (Egyptian!) chariot to reunite with his father, who thought he was dead Genesis 46:29
• Sometimes, the enemies proved to be too strong, even with Yahweh’s help Judges 1:19
Horses were bridled, with metal bits in their mouths.
The chariot anchored to the horses’ collars and a yoke saddle (invented by the Egyptians in 1500 BC)
The draft pole connects the axle to the yoke bar.
The pole was about eight feet long and bent
with heat and steam.
Drivers had a whip in one hand and two sets of reigns in the other.
When the archer ran out of arrows, he threw
short, heavy, spears.
The short, powerful, composite bow was perfect for shooting
from the chariot.
Hardwood for the axle was
imported.
Wooden rims were sometimes covered with leather “tires”. Later on, the Assyrians built rims of copper, bronze, and even iron (c. 900 BCE)
The bent draft pole acted as a leaf spring,
making a smoother ride.
The shell of the chariot was made of leather or
woven reeds for lightness, flexibility, and strength.
Leather straps held the yoke bar tightly against the running horses.
Egyptian chariots were
mobile archery platforms.
Sometimes the dust and noise
of chariot wheels made enemies
flee—even before the fighting started.
Egyptian chariots carried a driver and an archer.
Hub and wheels were held together with glue and hardened rawhide.
Six spokes provided strength, lightness,
and stability.
The bent wood frame held the whole
thing together.
• Pharaoh pursues the escaping Israelites with all his chariots Exodus 14:9
• This technology was expensive 1 Kings 10:29
• God travels in a chariot—but a different kind than these Psalm 104:3
