Dear Parents, Alumni and Friends,

Another year has come to a close, and the 2016-2017 school year was a great success. As we celebrated our 50th year as E.D. White Catholic High School, it was obvious that these successes stretched from one end of the school to the other. Many of our successes, however, are those that are unseen. The spirituality of the faculty, staff and students is the true success of the school. The class of 2017 displayed leadership throughout the year and left their mark on the long history of E.D. White Catholic High School. We wish them all the best as they move on to new chapters in

their lives and pray that God watches over them.

As you can see from the financial information in this report, the school continues to be financially strong. This strength along with support of alumni, parents, grandparents and friends allows us to continue to strive toward our mission of imparting the Catholic faith, promoting academic excellence and enhancing self-esteem.

In the last two years, supporters of the school have committed over 2.7 million dollars. Of that amount, 2.3 million dollars was in cash, which allowed us to begin or complete many major projects without borrowing money. In the past two years, the following projects have been completed:

Jeanette Labat Science Corridor – This $850,000 project totally refurbished all of our science labs into state-of-the-art science learning environments.

Boyd Hebert Park – This $300,000 project totally renovated our baseball park including a 1500 square foot field house.

Training Room - $35,000 was provided by Thibodaux Regional Medical Center for the addition of a fully furnished athletic training room.

St. Theresa Music Hall – The music library and uniform room were enlarged along with soundproofing of the rehearsal area in Phase I of a two-phase project to complete the band room.

Finally, construction is underway on the expansion of our Academic Enhancement Center and library renovation. This $1,080,000 project will include a new 3000 square foot AE Center along with major renovations to the library. All of these projects are fully funded and help us to continue to meet the needs of all of our students.

With your continued prayers and under the guidance of our principal, Michelle Chiasson, and our dedicated staff, I am sure that the upcoming school year will continue on the traditions of excellence begun years ago by the Sisters of Mount Carmel and the Brothers of the Sacred Heart.

Sincerely,

Tim Robichaux ‘79, President

Enhancing Self-EsteemSpring Athletic Highlightsby Mary Cavell, Athletic Director

Our spring sports made their mark and left a legacy for the history books. District championships were won by the boys track team and baseball team. Our boys track team and boys golf team were regional champions, and both of our boys and girls tennis teams were regional runner-ups. The softball team was district runner-up and made it to the state semi-finals, and our baseball team made it to the state quarterfinals. The gymnastics team made a strong showing in Baton Rouge with our girls team finishing as runner-up in level four.

The 2017 golf team and its members left a legacy on the courses this year. With a team balanced with a couple of experienced senior players and a few underclassmen with some good talent, the boys team took the district runner-up spot, and then came back the following week to capture the regional championship along with Teurlings Catholic. At the state meet held at the Wetlands golf course in Lafayette, the team maintained their focus and came out with some of their best scores during the first round. Freshman Nick Arcement scored an eight under on the first 18 holes of the state tournament – a feat that goes down in the record books for high school golf in Louisiana. The guys came back with a steady performance the second day and finished 3rd in the state in division II.

The boys and girls tennis teams had a successful season. With the leadership of their two seniors, Spencer Chiasson and Cameron Ray, both teams garnered regional runner-ups in division III. During the regular season the teams played in the Bayou River Region League, where the boys took second and the girls took fourth. This is a league composed of mainly 5A and 4A schools in the area. Both the boys and girls teams qualified a large amount of players to the state tournament. The team had a strong showing from our singles player, Taft Duplechain who reached the state

quarterfinals. With a strong nucleus of younger players returning and the experience received through competing at state, the future is bright for Cardinal tennis.

The 2017 Cardinal track and field team enjoyed a successful season by leaving a legacy of championships. The Cardinals captured team titles in the Catholic and Terrier relays and closed out the regular season finishing as Lafourche Parish champions for the first time in years. They traveled to Kaplan and garnered their 4th consecutive district championship qualifying 17 athletes in 15 events for Regionals. At an extremely competitive regional II meet, the team battled to the very last event to bring home the regional championship for the 2nd consecutive year. Heading into the class 3A state meet

in Baton Rouge, the Cardinals had qualified seven athletes in seven events. The team competed well and placed 5th in state. Two seniors who have left an incredible legacy for the Cardinal track program are Lucas Marcello and Kevin Johnson.

Lucas Marcello was a four-year letterman in distance; 1st team all district – district champion; 1st team all region – regional champion; 1st team all state – state champion 3200 m. Marcello set a new school record in the 3200 m of 9:46.23 breaking Stephen Bergeron’s record from 1982. Marcello signed to run for the University of New Orleans. Kevin Johnson was a four-year letterman in high jump; 1st team all district, 1st team all regional – regional runner-up and 1st team all state.

The 2017 girls track team did well with the young talent they had and grew from an inexperienced

Enhancing Self-Esteemgroup of athletes to competing with the best at the end of the season. With only two seniors and the rest underclassmen, the Cardinals finished 3rd at the regional meet, only one point from 2nd. They qualified seven girls in four events for the state meet in Baton Rouge. The Cardinals competed well and posted some of their best times of the year placing 9th overall in state. The 4 x 400 relay team composed of Annie Alexander, Rebecka Bollinger, Taylor Marcombe and Alya Shanklin, were the state runner-ups.

The 2017 softball team gave true meaning to this year’s athletic theme of “Leaving our Legacy.” Under the leadership of eight truly outstanding seniors, the Cardinals team had an amazing season! The team finished with a 25-8-1 record, including a district runner-up title and state-semifinalist bid. The team was dominating in tournament play, going 10-2 overall in four tournaments. The team went 10-2 in district, only falling to the eventual class 3A state champions, North Vermilion. The team ended the regular season being ranked no. 3 in division II and no. 6 overall

in class 3A. They made it to the state tournament for the 3rd time in the program’s history, the first time to the tournament held in Sulfur, where they defeated St. Thomas More in the quarter-final round. With the win, the Cardinals moved into the semi-finals for the first time since 1993, where they met up with Riverside Academy. With a valiant effort and leaving it all out on the field, the Cardinals fell to the Rebels.

The 2017 baseball team was a true “sandlot baseball crew,” a team of players and coaches who simply loved playing the game. The season was filled with many highs and lows, but whether it was crosses they had to carry or victories they would celebrate, these young men counted them all as blessings and life lessons. From being ranked in the nation, to dropping games because our hits were not there, to a new dressing facility, to a water soaked field, these guys always stepped to the plate and gave it their all.

The Cardinals played in the toughest 3A district in the state and wound up in a three-way tie for the district championship. Moving into the select playoffs as the no. 1 seed was what we had hoped for giving us a bye in the regional round, but it wound up being a curse instead of a blessing. We hosted St. Louis Catholic in the quarterfinal games two weeks later. The Saints came in focused and handed our Cardinals a quarterfinal defeat. Though a tough loss to take, it is all of these lessons that our young men will grow and learn from, helping them in their future.

Our boys and girls gymnastics team competed at the state gymnastics meet in Baton Rouge. This year we had one male athlete competing and eight females. Although we did not have enough gymnasts to compete for an overall title, our athletes performed well. In the boys division, Ethan Clapp competed against 32 other male athletes, while our girls competed against 142 other female athletes.

Clapp received all state honors for his 2nd place finish in the rings and 3rd place finish in the vault. He placed 4th overall in division II. In the girls arena, we had six competitors in level 4 and two in level 8. Our level 4 team finished second in their division by 0.4 of a point behind the champion, Catholic High of New Iberia. Amanda Ledet was our top overall gymnast finishing 10th. All state honors were received by Emmi Lasseigne – 2nd in floor exercise and Laura DeGravelle – 4th on the vault.

Promoting Academic Excellence

Brandi Authement is pictured with her two daughters Kati and Kami on May 18 after being named the Brother Linus Teacher of the Year. The award recognizes an educator who teaches in the tradition of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart by setting clear, high, worthy, and profound expectations for themselves and their students. Faculty members select the recipient of the award annually. Two hallmarks of the tradition of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart are personal attention and academic excellence.

It is Authement’s 5th year teaching at E. D. White. She teaches 8th grade math and is the moderator of the National Honor Society and the Senior Class. She has a BS in Accounting from Nicholls, Masters in Math Education from Western Governors University, and is currently working on her Masters in Educational Leadership from WGU.

Authement said, “Being selected as Teacher of the Year at E. D. White is truly a great honor. This award serves as validation of the efforts of any teacher who tries to do the best that she can, but more than anything, I am simply honored to be able to teach at this amazing school. I feel as though everyone from administration to faculty members to maintenance to students has become my extended, and much cherished family. In receiving this award, it has filled me with great pride and encourages me to continue to do my best to serve as an example to my daughters as well as others that hard work and perseverance have their own reward.”

Past recipients of the award who are currently members of the EDW faculty/staff are Angie Knight, Mary Cavell, Andrea Hymel, Tim Robichaux, Kyle Lasseigne, Don Grabert, Shonie Morvant, Rebecca Pitts, Kris Guillot and Penny Hitt.

who have worked with the seniors vote on the recipient. The following categories are considered: character, scholarship, service, school spirit, and leadership.

The JoAnn Gros Educational Foundation was established in 2010, with the purpose of allowing the Gros family to honor the memory of JoAnn Gros who succumbed to cancer in August 2009. Gros taught at E. D. White for 20 years before retiring in 2001. By all accounts, she was an outstanding teacher who loved her profession, and accepted the challenge of reaching out to all students and getting them to perform to their capability. Glen Gros, husband of JoAnn is pictured presenting the scholarship to Jonathan Omer who was the 2017 recipient.

Kristen Weimer is pictured receiving the Nicole Davis Memorial Scholarship from Brandi Authement.

Nicole Davis was a member of the class of 2008, and passed away suddenly on March 5, 2008. Nicole was active in a number of co-curricular activities, holding leadership positions in many of the clubs to which she belonged. She served as president of the art and 4-H clubs, student council homeroom vice president, and the chair of the music ministry team. She was also active in campus ministry. In addition to these organizations, Nicole also participated in swimming and track. She was a wonderful young woman and touched the lives of many members of the E. D. White community.

Matthew Ory decided to build the Mike Ory Town Center in Thibodaux in remembrance of his brother Mike ’90 who lost his battle with cancer. The Mike

Ory Town Center is being built at the corner of La. 308 and Laura Drive in Thibodaux.

2000Dr. J.J. Tabor broke the state record at the 89th annual Grand Isle Tarpon

Rodeo in July. Tabor brought in a 383-pound, 2-ounce warsaw grouper that not only shattered the rodeo record, it established a new pending state record, which was ironically set by Tabor in 2008 with a 359-10 catch. The grouper will become

a state record after being certified by the state fisheries record committee of the Louisiana Outdoors Writers Association. Tabor’s grouper broke last year’s

rodeo record by nearly 100 pounds and eclipsed the state mark by nearly 25 pounds.

2011Rory Eschete, II is one of three medical students to receive an Alumni Heritage

Scholarship Award from American University of the Caribbean School of

Medicine (AUC). The award, which has a value of $20,960, is awarded to qualified applicants who have a work/volunteer

history with an AUC graduate.

Eschete earned a B.S. from Nicholls State University in 2015 with a major in pre-med biology and a minor in chemistry.

He started his first year of medical school at AUC in St. Maarten in May.

His motivation to become a physician was in large part influenced by his work as an emergency room technician at Terrebonne General Medical Center, working

with Dr. Brian Roberts. Through his interactions with Dr. Roberts, Rory has come away with a deep understanding of patient-centered care that he’ll take with him through medical school on his own journey to become a physician.

2015Tabitha Kearns, a junior at LSU, recently helped start a non-profit organization

on campus called Encounter that serves the homeless community in Baton Rouge, and she serves as the organization’s president.

Encounter was founded by the guiding belief that Louisiana’s homeless deserve love, compassion, respect, and dignity. The organization believes that individuals

should not be defined or valued by circumstances that lead to homelessness. United by humanity, it strives to raise awareness for those without a home, to serve neighbors in times of need, and to reverse the stereotype that surrounds

the homeless community, one encounter at a time.

Encounter has already started to impact the Baton Rouge community in various ways: serving dinner at St. Vincent de Paul, distributing food at Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank, and working in the computer lab at One Stop Shelter to help

the homeless apply for jobs and write resumes.

With over 200 students involved in the organization, Encounter is changing the way LSU students perceive homelessness. Because Encounter is a non-profit

organization, community involvement is essential to be able to continue its work. More information can be found on their website www.encounterlsu.com or on

Facebook at “Encounter at LSU.”

Hello everyone! My name is Michelle Fakier Keife. I am a 1999 graduate of E. D. White and am honored to serve as the new Alumni Director.

This is an exciting time for us, as we just completed our cel-ebration of 50 years of EDW! During the 2016-2017 school year, we welcomed back over 500 alumni with 50-year re-unions for all of our sports

teams and student organizations.

The Alumni Board has been hard at work generating more excitement from our alumni and is busy planning additional events and opportunities for alumni involvement.

Just recently, the school honored the Classes of 1968, 1993 and 2008 at the annual Alumni Homecoming Tailgate. While the Class of ’68 attended the 50-Year Dinner in the Student Union, the Classes of ’93 and ’08, along with their families, enjoyed a beautiful September evening on their old stomping grounds with food, drinks, live entertainment and jump houses for the kids.

In addition to the annual homecoming tailgate, the Alumni Association hosts numerous other events, including the Alumnus of the Year Induction Ceremony, which is held in conjunction with the Alumni sponsored Mass. This year’s Alumnus of the Year is 1986 graduate Troy LeBlanc. The Prayer Breakfast, EDW Day at the Races and the Senior Boys and Girls Breakfasts are just a few other events hosted by the Alumni Association, along with the selling of the en-graved bricks outside of Harvey Peltier Stadium.

We have also created an EDW Alumni Association Face-book page, where you can keep up with up-to-date alumni-related news, as well as important school happenings. If you have anything you would like to share, we would love to hear from you! The association just recently introduced the “Future Cardinal” baby bibs for alums that have newborns. We would love to know who our Future Cardinals are, so that they can receive this free gift from us!

If you would like to learn more about the EDW Alumni Association, or simply have suggestions or ideas on how we can better serve the school we all love, please feel free to contact me at [email protected]. And please, help us update our alumni directory at http://www.edwhite.org/apps/directory/.

I look forward to reconnecting and working with all of you in the future to continue to make E. D. White the amazing school that it is.

GO CARDINALS!

AdvancementAdvancing the Mission

Since the opening of E. D. White Catholic, over 6000 students have gone through the hallowed halls and many of them serve the community as doctors, lawyers, engi-neers, teachers, and priests. When the school moved into the next 50 years, needs had to be addressed in order to continue to provide academic excellence to students.

At the beginning of the 2016-2017 school year, the Jea-nette Labat Science Corridor opened. It included a refur-bished state-of-the-art physics lab, chemistry lab, biol-ogy lab, advanced biology lab and a science classroom. The labs feature innovative workstations allowing stu-dents to work collaboratively.

Training Room

St. Theresa Music Hall

A new baseball fieldhouse was recently completed which includes dressing and restroom facili-ties for over 50 athletes. The fieldhouse also contains storage and coaches offices. In addition, new bleachers which seat over 600 fans were installed before the beginning of the 2017 season.

Renovations were done in the St. Theresa Music Hall to move the library and colorguard room and enlarge the uniform room.

The Thibodaux Regional training room in the union was completed in May 2017. The area is to provide individual assistance, injury care and rehab for all athletes.

Construction on the wrought iron fencing on Seventh Street and near the ticket booth at the entrance to the stadium was completed in August.

The bookstore in the Student Union was moved to a larger location and renovations were completed in October.

The Giardina Academic Enhancement Center expansion project has begun and is on schedule to be completed in December of this year. This expansion will double the size of the current AE Center and includes a 3,000 square foot mezzanine learning commons area. Additionally, the library is being renovated with new LED lighting and new flooring.

A grand opening of the new AE center will be held January 3, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. Anyone who is interested in attending the event can RSVP to Jane Bourgeois in the Advancement office at (985) 449-1859.

The Cardinal Music program had an outstanding year!

In 2016, the Cardinal Vanguard presented a marching show titled “In Bloom.” The Vanguard received superiors in all categories for all of their festivals. The Vanguard’s final festival was at Northwestern State University where they received 2nd place band in class 3A, 1st place color guard in 3A, and 5th place overall out of thirty-two bands.

The band had 13 students that were selected for the District Honor Band. Approximately four students advanced to second-round All-State auditions, and three students were selected for the All-State Concert Band and All-State Orchestra.

E. D. White Indoor Percussion had an extremely successful season. They placed 1st in scholastic marching A class at the Louisiana/Mississippi Circuit Championship held at the Warren Harang Auditorium. The group also placed 1st at the WGI regional held in Hattiesburg, MS. E.D. White Indoor Percus-sion finished out the season by traveling to WGI World Championships in Dayton, Ohio. They competed against 64 other schools in their class from all around the country and placed second in scholastic marching A. This is the highest E.D. White Indoor Percussion has ever placed at WGI World Cham-pionships, therefore making school history.

E. D. White Winterguard also had an outstanding year. They made the top 10 in the WGI Regional in Pensacola, Florida. They placed 3rd at the Louisiana/Mississippi Circuit Championships in scholastic AA class. The Winterguard also finished out the season by traveling to Dayton, Ohio where they gave their very best performance of the season. The Concert Band received an Excellent rating on stage at district festival and the Symphonic Band received sweepstakes at district festival. The Sym-phonic Band advanced to state festival, where they gave a great performance and received sweepstakes once again.
