I WANT TO ...

HAVE SOME FUNChestnut Grove Natural Area43 Chestnut Road, Conestoga

There are over 7,000 students attending Millers-ville University at the moment. If you’re looking to escape the hustle and bustle of overly excited college students, Chestnut Grove Natural Area may be a won-derful place to get away from your dorm room.

This space was originally a dairy farm that was turned into a recreational spot. The 170-acre area fea-tures wetlands, forests, wildflowers and grasslands, so whether you’re looking to wander aimlessly among flowers or take some friends out for a quality hike, you’re in good hands. There are 13 trails to hike on — 11 of them are considered user-friendly, while only two are considered difficult. Almost all of the trails are carved out with mowed grass or dirt.

This is one of the only local natural areas with wild-flowers, so it’s a special treat hidden away for people to find. Over 4,000 native trees and thousands of native grasses and flowers have been planted at Chestnut Grove, making it an ideal spot for plant enthusiasts and nature lovers alike.

A hike through the wetlands includes informational plaques that talk about the critical state of the land-form, and why it’s essential to protect its presence. At its core, the natural area promotes education — not only about the native plants, but the animals, too. Birds from all over, including a rare sandhill crane, have already deemed this spot a safe home.

The Chestnut Grove Natural Area will be a peaceful “home away from home,” and can serve as a go-to getaway spot while in college.

Hours: From dawn until dusk.

The Rabbit and Dragonfly51 N. Market St., Lancaster

In the ’40s and ’50s, there was an informal literary group associated with Oxford University that gathered to talk about what was new in the writing world. The group was lovingly called “The Inklings,” and they met at a bar — The Eagle and Child — in the United Kingdom. Among this brilliantly talented group of writers were the likes of C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien, who shaped the literary world as we know it.

Jason Zimmerman and David Seyfried collaborated to create a space in honor of this group, and their creative vision turned into the cafe The Rabbit and Dragonfly. Their drinks and cuisine feature inspirations from both Lewis and Tolkien, be it in their names or ingredients. On the walls are large decorations, such as a map of Middle Earth, large bookshelves packed with books and a large Narnia-inspired mural.

The atmosphere will be different on any given night; sometimes they do open mic nights, and sometimes they have book signings and art exhibits. One half of the cafe features a large multipurpose space which can be used for performances, banquets or just as dining space. They also have a vast number of books for sale.

“It’s a true experience. You come here, and it’s an at-traction; it’s a destination,” Seyfried says. While he goes to many different cafes, he still finds The Rabbit and Dragonfly unique in its adoration for all things creative. “We aren’t put off by people doing unique activities here. Some cafes just tolerate artists, but we want more and more of it happening.”

Whether you’re looking to meet new friends, or simply to be inspired, Seyfried says that this is a good place to be. Not to mention, if you show your student ID, you can get 10 percent off of any given order, which can add up, especially if you’re a coffee enthusiast.

Hours:Tuesday and Friday: 10 a.m.-9 p.m.Thursday: 5 p.m.-9 p.m.Saturday: 9 a.m.-9 p.m.

Chameleon Club

228 N. Water St., Lancaster

Not 21, but still looking to go out on a Friday

night? Or even a Wednesday night? The Chameleon

Club is a dance and nightclub that often has all-ages

nights. The dance venue has weekend events and

concerts, which can pop up on any day of the week.

Right down the street from popular brunch

destination Rachel’s Cafe & Creperie, the Chame-

leon Club has been around since June 1985. Still as

popular as it was back then, this nightclub is a gem

in Lancaster for its ability to host large national acts.

Because Lancaster is on the path many major artists

travel while touring between Washington, D.C., and

Philadelphia or New York, big-name artists stop to play here. With over 200 shows a year, the Chame-leon Club is never short of music. It might be a small venue compared to others in central Pennsylvania, but it’s the perfect space for having an unforget-table experience. With the entire club being general admission, one can almost touch the performers on the stage if they wiggle through the crowd.

Below the Chameleon Club is the Lizard Lounge, which hosts even more shows and local artists every Monday through Saturday from 6 p.m. to 2 a.m. Any-one can stop by to purchase tickets to Chameleon Club shows at the Lizard Lounge, drop in to listen to the music and join in on events like comedy night.

Hours: Monday-Saturday: 7 p.m.-2 a.m.

Tellus36024 E. King St., Lancaster

Tellus360 is arguably one of the biggest staples in Lancaster’s nightlife scene — and for good reason. Right in the middle of the seemingly endless row of bars on King Street, Tellus offers a little bit of every-thing. Some nights will feature karaoke, while others will feature live performances from local artists — the content can vary from country to hard rock to spoken word, and everything in between.

Weekends can bring a hectic atmosphere; however, weekdays offer a more intimate setting for those who are uncomfortable with large crowds. The versatility of this bar, with its three levels, calls for a different kind of celebration depending on which day of the week you go out.

“All who enter are equal” is a large theme for this venue, so it serves as a safe place in the community, fostering individuality. There’s no definite age bracket

I WANT TO ...

GO OUT TONIGHT

— people from all ages come together to enjoy beer,

cocktails and other Tellus creations (we recommend the

Tellus Berry Lemonade. Delish!). For those who don’t

drink, but adore local performances, they offer Irish pub

food and darts upstairs.

Fact of the matter is, you never know what you’re

going to get at Tellus, and that unpredictability makes

it a hot spot in the city. Events such as silent discos and

cover band nights can be refreshing after an over-

whelming school week, and on any given weekday they

normally have something going on. Many events do not

have cover charges.

Recently, they re-opened their rooftop bar, a spectac-

ular space adorned with tables, umbrellas and plants.

On weekends, it’s a great space to hang out with your

friends, enjoy a nice cocktail and forget about life for a

little while.

Hours: Vary depending on the day.

Bert’s Bottle Shop369 Comet Drive, Lancaster

Alberto Flores, better known as simply “Bert,” is perhaps one of the most dynamic and knowledgeable beer gurus in the Lancaster area. He took his adora-tion for all things beer-related and opened a bottle shop. What makes his business different, however, is the environment.

A typical bottle shop experience can go as follows: You walk in, find your beer, pay for your beer and then leave. Bert makes it more of a community-building experience, where beer enthusiasts and newbies alike can sit down and enjoy a beer together.

While there are TVs at Bert’s, they are not typi-cally used for viewing cable shows. “It’s incredible to see people sit down at the bar who don’t know each other, and by the end, she’s talking to him, he’s talking to her. They’re talking about beer. I cannot tell you how many times customers have bought something

and said, ‘Oh, bring three more glasses, I want to share,’ ” Flores says.

Bert’s Bottle Shop features over 500 kinds of beer from all over: everything from local beers to Trappist beers brewed in monasteries. In addition, he features over 10 rotating beers on tap at any given time.

The bottle shop is also ideal for those who just want to grab a bite to eat, as they have a small, but delicious array of foods. We recommend the Chicken Tikka Masala Pastie, an Indian curry dish stuffed into a puff pastry.

This place is great for college kids because it fo-cuses on socialization and trying new things. If you’re even remotely interested in beer, Bert will be able to work with you and offer something that is in your taste range. You won’t leave empty-handed.
