ABOUT OUR

TRAININGS

Fall Training Schedule

ALL FOSTER PARENTS ARE REQUIRED TO COMPLETE RPPS TRAINING BY END OF SEPTEMBER

In September 2014, Congress passed the “Prevent Sex Trafficking and Strengthening Families” Act, H.R. 4980. This law establishes prudent parent standards throughout the United States. As part of this federal law, foster parents are now required to complete the Reasonable and Prudent Parent Standard Training (RPPS) by September 30, 2016. The Reasonable and Prudent Parent Standard allows foster parents to give their foster children permission to do age-appropriate activities that promote cognitive, emotional, physical and behavioral growth. All states are now required to promote normalcy for children in care.

In order to complete this requirement, foster parents must visit the IFAPA website (www.ifapa.org) to view the 30 minute RPPS training video. Upon completion of the video, foster parents will be directed to a form to complete. After the form is submitted, a confirmation email will be sent to the training participant that completed this required training. Foster parents must forward the email confirmation to their Iowa KidsNet Renewal/Support Specialist in order to demonstrate they have completed this required course. While this training is required of all foster parents, they will not receive any training credit to apply toward their license renewal. Each foster parent will only need to complete this training once and there is no cost.

The Brain: Normal Development vs Brain After Trauma The brain is such an interesting and sometimes confusing topic. In this session we will discuss normal brain development, from in utero through young adulthood. We will examine the role that genetics and environment play in brain development. We will then compare normal brain development with brain development of someone who has experienced trauma. Together we will look at the structural changes that trauma can have on the brain, as well as, chemical and neuronal pathway changes that can occur. We will discuss what can be done for those who have a brain that has developed through trauma.

Everything You Wanted to Know About Foster Parenting But Were Afraid to Ask Whether you just finished your PS-MAPP course or have been a foster parent for years, questions about the nitty, gritty aspects of foster parenting always arise. Whether it is questions about navigating the system, licensing rules and regulations, what steps to take if you find yourself facing an allegation of abuse or questions about working with birth parents, having answers can extend placements and maintain calm in your home. This course focuses on the answers by providing up-to-date information through a trauma lens while providing participants with a deeper understanding of the reason behind the rules, everyday resources and ways to protect yourself and your home.

Family Matters - Working with Birth Families in the 21st Century Today’s foster parents, kinship and relative caregivers are key partners in helping children and families move through the system toward positive outcomes. During this class, we will explore the history of working with birth families along with the expectations and opportunities that exist today. We will explore how trauma impacts individuals, families, and the process of moving through the system and engaging the change process. We will explore the Family Interaction Initiative. The class will focus on specific practical tools for communication, documentation, and goal setting that will help to de-mystify the birth family-foster family relationship and provide a path for positive change.

For Better or For Worse: Couples Who Foster This class focuses on the impact that taking foster and adoptive children into your home can have on the parents’ relationship and your family as a whole. We will discuss strategies to help keep the relationship fresh, fun and supportive as couples

deal with daily stress and especially parenting. This class is intended for couples ONLY, and both partners must attend the class together.

Foster Care Meets Mental Health: A Foster Parent Dilemma! Do your foster children sometimes come with a diagnosis you do not understand or appear to have behaviors that no one has addressed? Have you ever had to send a child away because you didn't know what to do? Many children placed in the system are currently struggling with issues because of the trauma they have experiences. In this class we will review the basics of many diagnoses that are common. We will learn how to recognize the symptoms of mental health distress and suicide risk. We discuss how trauma effects children and look at how those symptoms are sometimes made worse by our reactions.

Fostering Attachment Within Our Families to Build Connection, Effective Consequences & Restored Hope In this workshop, we will explore the effects of trauma on attachment and understand the connection between attachment and understanding consequences. We will learn practical, effective and FUN tools for fostering attachment within our families. We will then delve more deeply into understanding troubling behaviors such as chronic lying, stealing, and harm to self or others. We will explore the difference between punishment that increases difficulty with attachment and effective trauma-informed consequences that restore hope and dignity to the child, and further restore him/her to family and community. *If you have attended either of the Fostering

Hope and Attachment with Youth or What Are You Trying to Tell Me: Responding Effectively to Troubling Behaviors trainings presented by Krista McCalley and Lois Smidt, some, of this will be a refresher; however new information will be incorporated.

The Grieving Process - How to Help You & Your Kids Heal Throughout our lives we have all experienced physical pain and injury. When we’ve experienced these injuries we also accept that there is a healing process involved that is normal and necessary in order for us to be able to effectively return to our everyday responsibilities. What many of us forget at times is that this same healing process is necessary any time we have experienced a loss on an emotional level. Not grieving is equivalent to not allowing your body to heal after major physical trauma or injury. Similar to other emotional difficulties in life, though, we tend to minimize the importance of the grieving process and this can result in anger, bitterness, resentment, depression, and anxiety that can negatively impact one’s life. The purpose of this workshop is to help participants understand the

grieving process and how to help children, adolescents, and adults heal emotionally from loss in a healthy manner.

Hope for Healing: Trust Based Relational Intervention Overwhelmed? Frustrated? Worn Out? Running out of options? In this workshop, you will be introduced to the three principles of TBRI (empowering, connecting, and correcting). TBRI will give you the tools you need to create a healing environment for your child. TBRI not only provides an understanding of the child’s challenges, but also provides practical tools on how to alleviate the challenges. While exploring TBRI principles, participants will learn how to get their child back on the normal developmental trajectory and on the road of healing.

Integrative Parenting: Strategies for Raising Children Affected by Attachment Trauma Integrative Parenting is a class that will empower foster parents, parents of adopted children, and parents of children impacted by trauma, with effective techniques to improve relationships with their challenging children. Integrative Parenting will help parents identify the root of their children’s misbehaviors, learn effective methods to calm reactive and misbehaving children and identify the impact of past trauma on your relationship with your child. You will also learn how to help your child heal through attunement, nurturing messages and comforting touch.

L.E.A.N Start - Lifestyle, Exercise, Attitude, Nutrition A comprehensive prevention plan to help children reach their optimal level in four pillars of health. The LEAN start program is based upon scientific research and designed by Dr. William Sears, “America’s pediatrician” as well as other experts in the field of children’s nutrition, health and fitness. These four areas work together to make families healthier - at any age and any stage of life.

The Magic of Healing the Brain and Fostering a Secure Attachment When a child has been removed from their home or has experienced a trauma we are told about the negative effects on the brain. It is often thought of as impossible to break through and work towards healing and acquiring a secure attached relationship. Together we will explore activities that will work towards healing the traumatized brain and towards creating a healthy secure attachment. We will discuss how to modify these activities from infants through teenagers as it is never too late to intervene and try to change your relationship.
