Giving back for a healthy community

Thank you Betty Becker Memorial Walk participants and donors

In 2008 a group of friends decided to honor the memory of a charismatic woman who had devoted her life to giving to others. Little did they know that a small idea could grow and ripple through the community touching so many lives.

The friends were the Step-Sisters. The woman was the late Betty Becker. The cause . . . a healthy community.

“Betty was always adamant about doing good will for the community,” said Elaine Grossman, friend and Step-Sister. “She was always encouraging us to be involved in the community.”

The Step-Sisters, founded by the late Betty Beck-er in 1999, originally consisted of 12 women, age 55 and over. The group met on a regular basis at Partner’s Dance Studio in Columbus, learning a variety of routines in conjunction with musical selections. In time, the Step-Sisters were singing and dancing in nursing homes, assisted living units and at community events. Becker’s goal was to have the Step-Sister performances en-tertain, and bring joy to the audience members. But on Oct. 2, 2007, Becker ended a coura-geous battle with ovarian cancer.

“We wanted to do something to honor Betty and all that she had done,” said Joanne Samp-son, friend and Step-Sister. “As Step Sisters our purpose had always been to serve others. The walk was just another way for us to give back to

Betty’s wish to “do for others” by hosting the Betty Becker Memorial Walk.

The first walk was held in 2008 on the hospital’s Wellness Walkway. The effort generated $6,000 to purchase comfort items for those undergoing chemotherapy at the Dean Clinic in Columbus.

And that first $6,000 has gone a long way. “Our volunteers are still assembling the chemotherapy comfort care kits for patients eight years later,” said Patti Walker, Volunteer Coordinator at CCH. “That shows you what a lasting effect Betty’s memory has had on so many people.”

The walk continued on the CCH Wellness Walkway through 2012, grossing over $15,000. Projects funded by the Betty Becker walk included care packs for chemotherapy patients, dental kits for children and adults, a Healthy Smile Day for designated Columbus and Fall River elementary students, post mammography care packs, breast health education, and heart healthy educational materials and equipment for the patients of Columbus Community Hospital.

In 2013, the group expanded the walk to a 5K and moved the festivities to the Fireman’s Park in Columbus. For two years, funds from the run/walk were donated to the Live It! Pre-teen Nutrition Program, instructed by CCH staff at the Columbus and Fall River middle schools. About $4,000 was raised both years.

Last year, the funds ($3,400) were used to purchase hydration sta-tions (water bottle refill stations) for the Columbus Middle School, Fall River Middle School, St. Jerome School in Columbus and Zion Lutheran School in Columbus.

Continued from front page

“A lot of kids and teachers are using the station,” said Cori Denk, Columbus Middle School Assistant Principal and Community Services Director. “It saves money and gives kids energy. It’s really helpful to the students and the staff.”

Denk participated in the 5K in 2015. “I really liked the fact that the run was put on by our community, for our community and that every dollar when back into the community,” she explained.

“The hydration station is already a huge hit at St. Jerome School,” said Jessica Davidson, RD, CD and CCH Live It! instructor. “The school has already saved over 600 water bottles by using the refill station.”

2015 marked the final Betty Becker Memorial Walk. Notifica-tion letters were sent out to past participants and walk donors, who in turn responded wtih donations in Betty’s honor for 2016.

“Through the years, many of our donations came in not because of the walk, but in honor of Betty and in honor of the project we had selected,” said Sampson. “We always felt Betty was smiling down on us. We are proud of the number of various things we have provided to the community and that we have served a variety of people.”

And what would Betty think of all of this?

“Betty would be so grateful,” said Grossman. “She would not have wanted her name in lights, but just the fact that we were contribut-ing to others, she would be so pleased.”

for your support and participationThank you to all the sponsors and participants of the 2016 Toasts and Tastes (held April 29 at Kestrel Ridge), the Golf Classic (held July 9 at Kestrel Ridge Golf Club) and the Chicken Shoot (held August 13 at Co-lumbus Sportsman’s Association). The three events, all sponsored by the Columbus Community Hospital Foundation, raised over $30,500.

Proceeds were used to assist in the purchasing of a Dietary Food Management (DFM) Room Service Connect System to manage patient meals. The automated system, which ensures that patients receive meals within proper diet and nutritional allotments, will be installed in early 2017. The system will hold all of the nutrition facts for each food item and will automatically tally the nutrients in the foods that the

patient orders via room service.

“If the patient is on a diabetic consistent carbohydrate diet, for example,” explains Emily Briggs, CCH Manager of Food, Nutrition, and Diabetes Services, “DFM will count the carbohydrates in the patient’s order and alert the culinary services team member if they go over (or under) their goal.”

So why is this so important?

“The diet is ordered just like a medication by the physician,” said Briggs. “Often times, the therapeu-tic diet plays a critical role in helping the patient get better faster. Even when a patient is receiving

a general diet, adequate nutrient intake is important for maintenance of lean body mass and energy, and has been shown to improve patient outcomes and reduce hospital readmissions.”

The system will also streamline and fine tune the ordering process for the culinary team members, dietitians and nurses.

“We currently utilize a 100% manual process, which is time consuming and prone to errors,” said Briggs.

The system will eliminate the need to hand write menus and calculate nutrients by hand in the busy kitchen environment. Patient meal orders may be taken via tablet at the bedside and sent electronically to a printer in the kitchen.

“We estimate that the time spent on creating menus will be reduced by 67% with DFM,” said Briggs. “The printed menus will also be easier to read for our nursing team who are documenting percent of the meal consumed and dosing medications based on intake.

Honoring care & compassion through grateful patients and families

In September, the CCH Foundation launched the Helping Hands Employee Recognition Program to give patients the opportunity to share their stories and recognize those who made a difference in their experience at Columbus Community Hospital.

“Simple gestures of kindness often mean the most,” explained Kristi Line, CCH Foundation Executive Director. “The program allows us to see the recognition through the eyes of the patient and their family.”

Helping Hands cards are provided to the patient at the time of discharge or cards are also available in the Columbus Community Hospital and Prairie Ridge Health Clinic waiting rooms. An electronic version is available by visiting columbuscommunityhospital.org.

For more information call Kristi Line, CCH Foundation Executive Director at 920-623-1370.

“In my 85 (almost 86) years I have never been so impressed with the level of care as I’ve been at Columbus Hospital. Everyone is so concerned and considerate, anticipating my every need. My family is also so satisfied with the experience here.”

“I had knee surgery…and everyone I was involved with from Pre-op, Anesthesia, to Post-op are a quality team. I felt comfortable and at ease the whole time. The care I received in my room was second to none. Never felt I was alone, professional, caring, warm hearted with humor, which to me is a valuable asset. Keep your teams intact because word spread! Class Act!”

“I was scheduled for a C-section and I was extremely nervous, Sarah and Alie both made me feel comfortable as they prepared me for surgery. Trish was amazing as she completed my spinal and during the whole procedure. There is no other place or staff I would rather have taking care of me. Thank you so much for all you do!”

“When I think of my recent stay, I can’t say enough about the care I received from ER, X-ray, MRI, the surgery on broken hip and bruised right shoulder, meds, food preparation by Café, nurses, therapists, cleaning of the room. All of it was excellent.”

The Volunteers of Columbus Community Hospital are currently accepting donations in honor of the 32nd Annual Lights of Love.

Each year, the Lights of Love allows community members to remember those they have lost or to show appreciation for family and friends through the purchase of a light in their memory or honor. White lights represent those being remembered and colored lights represent those being honored. Blue lights honor members of the United States

Military, or a loved one living overseas.

Funds from the event will be used to purchase equipment for the CCH Lifeline program, a home emergency response system used by residents in the hospital’s service area. Lifeline enables elderly, handicapped or medically-fragile persons to live in dependently, while assuring them that if they need help quickly, it will be available to them at the press of a button. The service is available to those with traditional landline phone service and cellular or wireless service. A GPS system is also available. If you would like to contribute to this year’s Lights of Love, please complete the donation form below and mail it to Lights of Love, c/o Columbus Community Hospital, 1515 Park Avenue, Columbus, WI 53925. A minimum gift of $5.00 per light per person is appreciated. Checks should be made payable to the Lights of Love. Names of those honored and remembered will be displayed at the Lights of Love ceremony on Sunday, Dec. 11 at 4:30 p.m. at the hospital’s main entrance and printed in the spring issue of the Foundation Focus. All are welcome to attend the tree lighting ceremony. For more information about the Volunteers of CCH Lights of Love, call 920-623-1280.
