A LETTER FROM OUR PRESIDENT: WHAT THE HECK ARE YOU DOING?

DEAR ALUMNI AND FRIENDS,With over 3,000 Leadership Memphis alumni it is difficult to keep up with what everyone is doing to make Memphis a better place. Even alums I see out and about are for the most part too modest (or too busy) to tell me what boards they serve on, where they

volunteer these days, and in some cases – where they work! Yet, I know you are making a difference for Memphis – that’s who you are. A few months ago in an effort to find out your opinion on “What the Heck is LM Doing?” we took the initiative to ask what you think about Leadership Memphis given a number of changes we’ve undergone in the past few years. Many thanks to the alums who took the time to participate in our alumni survey. Here are some of the results:

• Leadership Memphis is headed in the right direction.Agree and Strongly Agree – 90% (63% or two-thirds said Strongly Agree)

• I am willing to recommend a colleague, friend, or family member to participate in a LM program.Agree and Strongly Agree – 89.3%

• I encourage others to use the Volunteer Memphis website to search volunteer opportunities.Agree and Strongly Agree – 87.1%

• LM does a good job of recognizing alumni for making a difference in the community.Agree and Strongly Agree – 90%

Of course, we are delighted with the quantitative results. We also received a number of open-ended comments

– ranging from what I would call “wildly encouraging” to “needs improvement” in some specific areas. Leadership Memphis always appreciates honest, constructive feedback. That is why we asked you in the first place. Anyway, back to my original question, “What the heck are you doing?” Over 500 alumni updated their contact information this summer as part of our annual effort to maintain an accurate database. And whether you’ve moved across town, or moved away, we would still love to stay in touch. Lastly, please make sure we know how you’ve chosen to plug in and make a difference in the community. We welcome information about promotions, job changes, awards and special recognition, and of course, board or other leadership positions you hold in the community. If you send it to me, I’ll pass it to the right people here at LM and we’ll spread the word. We are proud of our LM alums. Hope to see you at the Multicultural Breakfast (OCT 28) and the Holiday Party (DEC 3)!

Sincerely,

David Williams President/CEO Leadership Memphis

PS – We are in the middle of our annual alumni campaign and would greatly appreciate your financial support. (Sorry, I couldn’t help myself!)

Giving is now easier than ever. Leadership Memphis offers automatic monthly giving options as well as the traditional pledge and annual giving options.

Leadership Memphis prepares and mobilizes leaders to work together for the good of the whole community. To begin our 36th program year, Leadership Memphis worked with the LM Faculty to advance the programatic curriculum. As a result, our three core competencies include: framing and re-framing ideas, building relationships through social capital, and mobilizing resources. As we kick off this year’s programs, we hope you’ll join the conversations online by “liking” us on social media and reading the email Weekly Leader. Thank you for continuing to help create a greater Memphis.

Building social capital across cultures is at the soul of what Public Defender for Shelby County, Stephen Bush does for a living. Leadership Memphis is honored to have Stephen Bush as the speaker for the 8th Annual Multicultural Breakfast presented by FedEx, October 28, 2015, at the Holiday Inn - University of Memphis. Since 2010, Stephen Bush has led the Law Offices of the Shelby County Public Defender, the third oldest public defender office in the country and one of the largest in the South. Stephen is the architect of The Jericho Project, a highly acclaimed jail diversion program for people with serious mental illness and substance abuse disorders. His work has been featured recently by the National Association for Mental Illness, the L.A. Daily News and several local media outlets. Earlier this year, the Jericho Project was recognized by the Association of Prosecuting Attorneys as an Innovations in Criminal Justice Award winner. Born in Brooklyn, Stephen grew up in the South, the son of an Episcopal priest and a public school teacher. After graduating from the University of Memphis School

of Law, he joined the Shelby County Public Defender’s Office, where he has served for more than 20 years. The Multicultural Breakfast is open to the public. Registration and the breakfast buffet opens at 8:00 and the program begins promptly at 8:30 a.m. Tickets are $50 per person or $500 per table of 10. To RSVP, call 901-278-0016 by October 23 or register online at leadershipmemphis.org/multiculturalbreakfastSeats for Corporate Sponsors and Alumni Donors at the $250 level and above are included in your sponsorship but do require an RSVP.

COLLEGE TOURS CONTINUE: HOPE AND OPPORTUNITY ESSENTIAL THEME IN EXPANDING HORIZONSOver the summer, Shelby County students embarked on regional college and career tours. This fall hundreds will explore various local colleges and career exploration opportunites thanks to your support.

“This trip was a symbol of encouragement, hope, and love. It has encouraged us to take advantage of opportunity and it showed us that we can do it but we’re not alone. It was the best because we were also shown love from outside of our family and community.”

Thank you to the generous foundations who have supported Leadership Memphis over the past year. Because of you, we are able to prepare and mobilize more leaders to work together for the good of the whole community.

Leadership, innovation and strategic branding are just some of the strengths of alum and Board Member, Jeff Rower. When asked what it means to be a leader Jeff responded “to use ones sphere of influence and talents to promote a positive outcome with specific goals.” Jeff fits this description.

Jeff Rower is a Senior Advertising Executive with over 20 years of experience in a broad range of marketing communication disciplines including his work with Ford.

Jeff first got involved with Leadership Memphis after expressing his interest in becoming more involved with the Memphis community and a business friend shared his Leadership Memphis experience. Jeff now serves on the Leadership Memphis board and is a graduate of the

2013 Executive Program.

Rower has managed numerous regional campaigns and has an extensive history of penetrating markets and forging long-term business-to-business relationships. He uses his connections and talents in his role with fundraising, marketing, and volunteering with Leadership Memphis. Jeff believes that, “Donating money and in-kind services, and spending time volunteering are charitable gifts. Some have the means and ability to do both. Some have more time than money. Each individual needs to examine on an on-going basis how they are best suited to positively impact the community.” We are lucky and proud to have a leader like Jeff Rower in our community.

STEP UP SPOTLIGHT: COMMUNITY LEADERS IGNITE CHANGE IN MEMPHIS

Through our over 35 years of preparing and mobilizing leaders to work together for the good of the whole community, Leadership Memphis has fostered relationships and provided community leadership programs to over 3,000 alumni.

Each year, we are blown away by the conversations and commitments made between classes, the conversations held before and after alumni engagement events, and the power of Leadership Memphis as the common thread.

Ultimately, we will be known by the problems we solve and as Memphis continues to shine and prosper through its grinding community eager to make Memphis an even greater place, we want to highlight some alumni who’ve stepped up to advance both our organization and the community as a whole.

We celebrate our alumni receiving distinguished honors, career changes, and stepping up in our community and encourage alumni to use the #StepUp4Memphis hashtag to share alumni accomplishments.

If you would like to add your accomplishment or various community involvement to our website, or are not currently receiving our weekly e-newsletter, The Weekly Leader, please email senior marketing and communications coordinator, Andrew Bartolotta, at [email protected] or give him a call at 901-278-0016.

Prodigi Arts exists to craft visually captivating content for brands and their marketing and entertainment objectives in today’s digitally defined world.

As Founder and President of Prodigi Arts, Chris O’Conner works with global brands like FedEx and instrumental local organizations like Regional One Health, Levitt Shell, and Seeding Success.

Chris’s passion for digital storytelling has helped Leadership Memphis to tell our story in new and exciting ways through his corporate sponsorship.

When asked why our community needs Leadership Memphis, O’Conner responded, “So many talented individuals move away from Memphis due to the misconception that there is nothing good in Memphis, and that there aren’t any opportunities for professional growth. Leadership Memphis serves as a good “role model” for how we all can help to build a better Memphis. The organization has continuously motivated leaders to commit to the city by providing opportunities for leaders to experience everything that is good about our city.”

O’Conner is a shining example of how a young professional can move Memphis forward through creativitiy and innovation.

Terri Riley is Senior Vice President-Managed Care Practices and Client Services at Sedgwick and her passion for the Memphis community is apparent in both her work and hobbies. Sedgwick is heavily engaged in the community, both charitable and volunteering. Terri has years of experience with developing and growing Sedgwick products, selling services to brokers and clients and expertise with evolving client programs from implementation to long term successful partnerships. Terri also frequently speaks at National industry conferences, client meetings and training sessions.

She first got involved with Leadership Memphis through receiving invitations to events by her employer. What surprised her most about Leadership Memphis is that, a relatively small organization is able to do such big things for our city.

Terri is an alum of the 2015 Executive Program, 2014 FastTrack Spring Program, and recently became a member of the Leadership Memphis Board of

Directors.

Terri Riley believes that our community needs Leadership Memphis as a way to strengthen the great leaders in this city to engage and take Memphis to the next level of prosperity.

Riley’s wish for our community is that we put focus on everything that is good and positive about Memphis and effect a change.

Let’s see if we can set a record for how many cans we are able to collect. We also are in need of volunteers to assist with registration, setting up and breaking down the event, and greeting guests. Any alumni that are able to step up and help out, please email Jared Bulluck at [email protected]. The Corporate Volunteer Council (CVC) is a dynamic group of business professionals representing businesses and corporations that recognize the critical importance of community engagement. Member companies have existing or emerging volunteer and community involvement programs and work hard to promote volunteerism throughout the community. The CVC meets monthly to share information and best practices on cutting-edge employee volunteer programs with timely updates on trends and events in the field of workplace volunteerism and community engagement. For example, Medtronic employees (pictured above) are permitted up to five days of paid time off in order to assist in natural disaster relief efforts, and many other ways. A big way they get their employees involved is “Project 6 Month.” “The cool thing about this is that Medtronic employees are encouraged to participate in community activities through the company’s Mission in Motion program, and are supported in their efforts to do so during workday hours,” said Victor Rocha, Public Relations Manager of Medtronic. If you are interested in joining the CVC or receiving additional information about the Corporate Volunteer Council, email Carol Gaudino, Director of Volunteer Memphis at [email protected]
