SCRATCH Educates the RegionSCRATCH Educates the RegionSCRATCH Educates the Region SCRATCH members have been out
and about at various community events this summer, making the coalition known and distributing information about the dangers of drugs and alcohol.
Gloria McCoy, working for Partnership for Success, an initiative that enhances and ex-pands the efforts of the SCRATCH Coalition by reaching out to returning vets, the elderly and par-ents in the region about the dangers of prescrip-tion drug abuse, underage drinking and smoking, re-cently tabled at a commu-nity event in Vineland where kids had the oppor-tunity to practice football with professional players.
While families enjoyed the event, they were invited to pick up information about underage drinking, how to properly dis-pose of prescription medication, and of course about the SCRATCH Coalition.
Information about the SCRATCH Coali-tion reached thousands of Salem and Cumberland county residents at Nation-al Night Out events in Vine-land, Pennsgrove and Com-mercial Township in Au-gust. A special THANK YOU to SCRATCH Coalition mem-ber Michele Yangello of the Pennsville MAPSA who co-ordinated the National Night Out event in Penns-
ville and invited SCRATCH to attend.

TRIAD is an organization that
brings together senior citizens and law enforcement in hopes of preventing and reducing criminal victimization of the elderly.

Members of SCRATCH and the Cumberland County Healthy Commu-nities Coalition (CCHCC) have been ac-tively working to establish more pre-scription drug drop boxes in Cumber-land and Salem counties.
Most recently, Jessica Kanady, CCHCC Coordinator and SCRATCH mem-ber, met with all the police chiefs in Cum-berland county at their monthly meeting in July with the county’s prose-cutor’s office. She spoke with the police chiefs about how to regis-ter and set up a drop box and answered any questions they had about the pro-
cess. She also assured them that our coa-litions are here to help in any way we can, including assisting with paperwork and communication with Project Medi-cine Drop, who supplies the boxes, and advertising the boxes once they’re in-stalled.
Jessica also congratulated and thanked the chiefs of the stations who have already had drop boxes installed.
Cory Gilden, SCRATCH Coalition Coordinator, will be meeting with the Salem County police chiefs at their meeting in September to urge them to install prescription drug drop boxes. Doug Colli-er, retired DEA and Drug Initiative Coordinator with the New Jersey Office of the Attorney Gen-eral—Division of Consumer Affairs, will accompany Cory to the meeting to clarify the process of in-stalling a drop box and to tell about the successes of drop boxes around the state.

Police Chiefs Encouraged to Install Drop Boxes
During the National Night Out event in Pennsville this August, nearly 100 adults signed Parents Who Host Lose the Most pledge cards! By signing the card, they pledge not to host parties with underage drinking.

SCRATCH Coalition Coordinator, Cory Gilden, and two representa-tives from the Gloucester Regional Addictive Substances Prevention (GRASP) Coalition joined nearly 2,000 substance abuse prevention specialists from across the country at Community Anti-Drug Coalitions of America's (CADCA) 2014 Mid-Year Training Institute in Orlando, Fla. July 20-24. The week-long train-ing took place at the Hilton Orlando Bonnet Creek Hotel.
The three coalition repre-sentatives sent by the South-west Council enjoyed CAD-CA’s Mid-Year Training Insti-tute is a one-of-a-kind intensive training opportunity, which offered more than 70 half-day and two-day courses geared towards helping participants find solutions to their
community’s toughest substance abuse problems. There were com-munity and state leaders from across the United States and 15 oth-er countries.
Attendees participated in a vari-ety of lecture and hands-on sessions to expand their knowledge in pre-vention science and improve their skills in implementing evidence-based strategies to reduce drug and alcohol use.
This year’s Mid-Year featured a number of renowned experts in the field of substance abuse prevention, such as Michael Botticelli, Acting Director of National Drug Control Policy, and Kana Enomoto, Deputy Principal Administrator for the Sub-stance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA).
Cory also participated in CAD-CA’s “30 Seconds of Success” video, where she touted the accomplish-
ments and efforts of the SCRATCH coalition in less than 30 seconds.
In addition to the CADCA con-ference, Cory also attended the day-long Smart Approaches to Marijua-na (SAM) National Marijuana Action Summit the day before the CADCA conference. Inspiring speakers such as Dr. Kevin Sabet, cofounder of SAM and member of the University of Florida Drug Policy Institute, and former congressman Patrick Kenne-dy spoke about the latest data and experiences from Colorado and Washington and gave a marijuana industry update. The SCRATCH coalition looks forward to bringing Dr. Sabet to speak in the region on Oct. 30 at the Glassboro Rowan University Court-
yard by Marriot. Dr. Sabet will present about the dangers of mariju-ana legalization and give a nation-al roundup about the progress of the legalization of marijuana in other
states. The half-day presentation is free and open to anyone who’d like to attend. Registration is required Register at: http://thetruthaboutmarijuana. eventbrite.com Inside Story Headline
