Helen: World War I. “I learned a lot of stuff that I didn’t know.” Kathy: “Anything literary. I’m an avid reader.” De: “Anything in the field of history.” What area of study is most appealing to you? Arlene: Likes the variety. ”Sometimes I didn’t take a class and later I wish I had. You never know what a class is like until you try it.” Helen: “What I find interesting on the list of new classes.” Kathy: “Arts and crafts that appeal to me, like scrapbooking and stamping.” De: “In addition to history I also like computer classes.” As you can see there are a lot of different answers. Come take a class or two and see what it’s all about. You’re bound to learn something you didn’t already know and make some new friends. What’s new? Be sure to check out the new “Armchair Traveler” series in Barry County. Reminder: You can take classes in both Hastings and Battle Creek. Parting Tidbit “When you believe in your purpose nothing can stand in your way.” I’m looking forward to seeing you out and about this term in a class or at a luncheon. Terri Schreffler ILR Board President
Terri’s Tidbits Why do adults in their senior years “go back to school”? What’s the draw? Let’s find out from a few current students: Arlene Berry, Helen de Finta, Kathy Peacock and De Davis. How do taking ILR classes benefit you? Arlene: Interested in the classes, like the subject. “Living alone I like the connectivity. I don’t learn everything they’re teaching but I learn a lot. I became interested in history when I started doing genealogy.” Helen: “Meet new people, learning and fun, learned stuff that I wouldn’t have otherwise.” Kathy: Reading things you wouldn’t read on your own. “Stretches me beyond my comfort zone; makes me think outside the box.” De: “I go to learn things.” No tests, quizzes or papers to prepare. How many classes have you taken? Arlene: About three to five a term for the past four to five years. Helen: Two in the past five years and one trip. “I’m planning on the Stratford trip in August.” Kathy: Minimum of two per term for the past five years. “I went to a luncheon with another ILR member and discovered there were classes.” De: About two to three classes a year for the past 14 years. What is your favorite class, or the class most interesting or informative? Arlene: Book studies, where the whole class reads the same book.

New this semester, we would like to introduce you to some of our new instructors.
Below you will find short bios on three of these instructors. Take a minute to read them and find
out a little bit more about those teaching your classes!

Traveler’s Series: National Parks
When Jennifer Haywood and her family traveled to the Great
Smokey Mountains National Park a
few years ago, it inspired her to start a new business.
At the time, two of her children
were taking part in the Junior
Ranger program. During the trip they visited the park store looking
for a game, or something that
might further their education, but
didn’t find exactly what they were
looking for.
On their way home, her 8 year old
daughter drew a picture of a possible Junior Ranger game. So, Jennifer, a professional illustrator
for over 15 years, took the concept and began to draw. The result was the beginnings of the Jr. Ranger-
Land products. Since 2009 she has
created board games, books, and puzzles that encourage children to participate in the junior ranger
program or learn about and
explore the outdoors. The products are also a way for Jennifer to
combine her interests of travel, art and education.
You can learn more about the Jr. RangerLand products and Jennifer Haywood at
www.jr-rangerland.com.
is
teaching Astronomy:
When Nature Won’t, Pluto Will
Richard Bell got bit by the astronomy bug at a very early
age. He enjoyed looking at
pictures of the planets as early as age 4 and got his first telescope at age 8.
Richard has had just about every
astronomy-related job one can have in Kalamazoo. He’s worked at
the local planetarium for nine
years, sold telescopes at a local
hobby shop for six years, and has
taught introductory astronomy
courses at most of the surrounding
colleges and universities.
He currently teaches at Kalamazoo Valley Community College.
Richard is an avid observer; having completed several of the Astronomical League’s observing
programs. He also considers
himself a budding astro-photographer. Richard is a lifetime member, and current
president, of the Kalamazoo
Astronomical Society, the oldest and one of the largest groups of its
