National Convention Success

The Cal Poly Dairy Science Department hosted this year’s Cow Camp, and our CJHA group had a fabulous time!

Living in the dorms for 3 days, Cow Camp is an educational and fun experience for dairy youth of all ages. We had the opportunity to learn both in the classroom and ‘hands-on’ as younger and older campers worked together in teams around the dairy. Calf management skills such as taking temperatures, blood-drawing, and using a weight tape were practiced. Equipment repair and changing liners was tackled in the milking parlor, while the computer lab offered the opportunity to explore Dairy Comp records and herd data. A blind tasting of cheeses and milks was done for flavors. Clipping and showmanship clinics were offered, as well as a judging contest and practice. Aside from all this education, we were able to squeeze in a little fun! A beach bonfire and BBQ was again a big hit at Avila Beach. We also enjoyed tasty Cal Poly ice cream, and an afternoon at the on-campus bowling alley for friendly competition. Dairy Jeopardy was introduced to many new members with a game featuring Cow Camp specific questions. If you were unable to join us this summer, I hope you can next year for some interactive learning and fun in the sun with Holstein friends!
