fall 2014 - eagle ranch
TRANSCRIPT
Fall 2014
At the end of each spring, many of our children graduate from the Eagle Ranch program and return home. During the summer, a new group of children arrive at the Ranch with a fresh set of issues—girls and boys in pain who are about to take the first steps of
their own journey toward restoration. It is the way it should be, but I’m always struck by the contrast between the rawness of the emotions of the children arriving at the Ranch and the healing that has taken place for our recent graduates.
I have so much respect for our front line staff who have made the decision to step into these children’s pain. This is really counterintuitive, as our natural reaction is to avoid messy situations and people who are struggling. But these Eagle Ranch staff members have chosen a vocational path that is just the opposite.
The fruit of their labor is evident not just at the Ranch, but will also be realized in generations to come as our children replace their painful past issues with hope and healed relationships.
Thank you for investing in our children’s journey at Eagle Ranch. God’s blessings to you and your family.

Our MissionEagle Ranch provides a Christ-centered home for boys and girls in crisis and in need of hope and healing. Partnering with their families, we pursue family restoration and reunification. We seek to influence and equip others who share a similar calling to impact children, families and future generations.

Summertime at Eagle Ranch is focused on building friendships among the children. Various team building exercises and activities teach our boys and girls how to work with one another to accomplish a common goal.

School?
SchooltoMaking the GradeThe Eagle Ranch Grade Level Transition Program provides students who have failed the sixth or seventh grade during the previous year an opportunity to advance to the next grade level after the first 9 weeks of the following school year.
Erick, 14, didn’t like school. It was boring to him, and he didn’t care that he was failing. His attitude changed when he arrived at Eagle Ranch School. “I like that I get a lot more help here,” he said.
Students must take the initiative to be accepted into the program by completing an application and getting it signed by their parent or guardian. They also must meet weekly to review goals and progress with Director of Education and School Principal Jon DeWaal.
Students are required to maintain a grade level average based on their abilities. At the end of the first 9 weeks of the school year, those students who maintain the required averages in all academic classes will be immediately promoted to the next grade level for the remainder of the year.
Erick seems up to the challenge. “If I see I’m failing anything, I’m going to work hard to bring it up. I should get to 8th grade soon.”
For boys and girls in crisis, starting school can bring apprehension and fear. Pressure can be felt as social and academic worlds collide. The year at Eagle Ranch School is off to a positive start thanks to initiatives designed to
put students at ease and build confidence.
Recognizing AccomplishmentsHandwritten note cards are some of the most appreciated additions to the school. Teachers write notes to students who they notice are working hard or have made personal accomplishments.
“The kids put these in their binders and hang them on the shelves where they store their backpacks and books. Some take them home and put them on the bulletin boards in their bedrooms,” Principal DeWaal noted.
Perhaps even more excited are parents who also receive notes from the school. “Good News from Eagle Ranch School” is printed boldly on the outside of the card.
“I’ve heard from many families that these notes are the first time they’ve received anything positive from their child’s school.”
“I like that I get a lot more help here.”

In the early days of the school year, Mindy Burch, the science parapro at Eagle Ranch School, met a student named Rylie. A shy 7th grader, Rylie never made eye contact and never volunteered answers in class. “She was so closed off even her posture was a little stooped,” Mindy recalled.
Then Rylie walked into Mindy’s special exploratory class on sewing. The two worked closely together to make a pillow, and as the class progressed, Mindy noticed a new Rylie.
“By the end of the first class, she seemed like a different person. She looked me in the eye for the first time and said, ‘This is so cool!’ She had a huge smile on her face.”
Since then, Rylie has also made a pillow case and draw-string backpack. Now Rylie walks into class with a new air of confidence, seeming a little bit taller each day.
New Technology in the Classroom
LearnPad: A tablet uniquely designed for the education environment, offering a variety of ways to learn individually and collaboratively. Also, it works seamlessly with the school’s Promethean interactive white boards.
Scholastic’s Read 180 Program: A reading intervention program that helps determine each student’s reading level and provides individualized instructional support, while also challenging advanced readers.
we have one on one time with teachers
“Before I came to Eagle Ranch, I didn’t like doing homework.
Last year I saw how much it affected my grades. I want to try to
keep my grades up this year. We have smaller classes so I can
concentrate better, and we have one on one time with teachers.”

The Whitcomb Family Equine Center
May 17, 2014, marked the opening of Eagle Ranch’s equine facility, The Whitcomb Family Equine Center. The new home for our equine therapy program features 6 stalls, a wash stall, tack room, feed room, office and storage room, as well as a small covered arena.
The previous structure, a modified cattle barn, had a narrow center aisle and lacked much-needed storage space. A larger aisle in the new barn makes ground work with the horses safer for the children, and the tack room allows the horse’s tack to be kept in the barn, rather than across the street where it was previously stored. The covered arena gives children the ability to continue with equine therapy during inclement weather.

Kevin Stipe remembers his youth pastor who went out of the way to reach out to him. “Regardless of what kind of trouble I was getting into, he was a steady friend and just wanted to help.”
That steady presence had a lasting influence. The struggling teen ended up graduating from Auburn, becoming a YoungLife leader, and working for a prominent bank. It was during that time in the late 1980s that Kevin first heard about Eagle Ranch.
“A co-worker introduced me to the Ranch, and then I met Eddie and Kayanne, who went to the same church as me and my wife, Hope.” Kevin and Hope began to support Eagle Ranch early on, and the more they learned about the program, the more they wanted to support it.
“The Ranch speaks into a child’s life during a moment of crisis, and that touched both my wife and I,” said Kevin. “I thought about the sacrifice that people like the Eagle Ranch houseparents make to care for struggling kids.” For nearly 20 years, Kevin and Hope Stipe have given to Eagle Ranch on a monthly basis.
“It’s a small sacrifice for us. Charities like Eagle Ranch need regular, consistent funding. It’s not like we give a lot, but we understand steady funds are useful.”
Eagle Ranch receives funding for nearly 50 percent of its annual budget during the months of November and December. Recurring gifts contribute greatly to the Ranch’s ability to operate throughout the rest of the year. Donors may choose monthly, bi-monthly, quarterly or other convenient donation intervals.

It is often said that children are the living messages we send to a time we will not see. A gift to Eagle Ranch through your will provides a legacy of helping heal and strengthen generations of children and families. If you already have a will, you can leave a gift to Eagle Ranch through a simple document called a codicil. Talk to your attorney and indicate “Eagle Ranch, Inc., Chestnut Mountain, Georgia,” as a beneficiary in your will, trust or life insurance policy. If you would like more information on how your gift can be used to benefit Eagle Ranch boys and girls, contact Eddie Staub at 770.967.8500 or [email protected].

A Gift That Gives BackIf you have thought about making a donation to Eagle Ranch, you may want to know about a way to give that provides a dollar-for-dollar tax credit for your gift. The Georgia Qualified Education Expense Tax Credit Program allows individuals and corporations to donate money for student education costs and receive a tax credit on their Georgia Income Tax. Your gift will benefit students at the on-campus SACS-accredited Eagle Ranch School.
Funds will run out in early January, so our program provider, Georgia Student Scholarship Organization (GaSSO), is accepting 2015 donation forms now. No check or credit card number will be required until 2015, upon approval of your form. Details about the tax credit program and how to participate are available at GeorgiaSSO.us. If you have specific questions, please contact Bob Baker at Eagle Ranch, 770.967.8500.
