What is Preventive Care?By Matthew Monteiro, MD

We’ve all heard the term preventive medicine or preventive care. What exactly is preventive medicine? It is the heart of family medicine…

keeping patients healthy.

Medical practices that help avoid disease are part of preventive medicine. There are three main categories of preventive medicine: 1) Primary prevention, 2) Secondary prevention and 3) Tertiary prevention.

Primary prevention involves ways to avoid diseases. The goal of primary prevention is to protect healthy people from developing disease. Hand washing is the simplest, yet most effective way to avoid many diseases. Other examples of ways to avoid diseases include immunizations, maintaining a healthy diet with exercise and not smoking.

Secondary prevention involves screening for certain diseases as well as treating a disease before it becomes symptomatic. The goal of secondary prevention is to halt or slow the progress of disease. Examples of secondary prevention include treating hypertension to prevent cardiovascular disease, providing modified work recommendations for injured workers and certain cancer screening tests.

Tertiary Prevention involves decreasing the complications of a disease though surgery or medications. This focuses on helping people manage complicated and long term health problems, such as cancer and heart disease. Examples of tertiary

prevention would be cardiac rehab programs and pain

management programs.

There are preventive strategies that you can use at every age. Talk to your provider about taking a proactive role in your health through

prevention.

One happy patient talked about the wonderful care Dr. Jeannette Keifert and the Woodbury Clinic has provided after being away all winter and suffering from

many health problems. This grateful patient was appreciative of the time Dr. Keifert took in the office as well as on the phone to help get a home health care plan set-up. Great job, Dr. Keifert!

Another mother shared how grateful they were with Dr. Chlebeck, Wanda Jungers and Stephanie Yang and the wonderful care they received at After Hours Care. Because of the care they received, her child’s finger was able to be re-attached at the hospital.

Entira Family Clinics receives Bridges to Excellence Awards!

Once again, Entira Family Clinics has received awards for health care excellence from

the “Bridges to Excellence” program sponsored by the Minnesota Health Action Group* (MHAG). “Bridges to Excellence” advances both care delivery and outcomes by rewarding clinics for meeting or exceeding a strict set of care standards for patients with diabetes, depression or vascular disease.

The programs look at how well patients who have these conditions are doing by reviewing various test results, such as appropriate blood pressures, blood sugar levels, cholesterol levels, depression assessments and aspirin use. Test results within specific parameters lead to better health outcomes.
