Educational Programs

School Programs, Tours and Workshops

fall 2013

The George Segal Gallery offers educational programs related to the permanent collection and changing exhibitions. School and community tours, workshops, lectures and symposia are regularly scheduled. A George Segal Gallery guided tour invites students to view and discuss contemporary art exhibitions and to participate in related hands-on activities. Tours and activities are formulated to explore the visual attributes of a show as well as cultural, historical and social topics related to the show. We are happy to collaborate with teachers or other group leaders and plan for a gallery visit specific to your needs. Self-guided group tours are allowed, provided that the gallery is given one day or more prior notice.

ToursPrograms are age-appropriate, interactive tours designed to encourage group discussion. Hands-on art activities typically follow. Tours and activities can be scheduled Tuesday through Friday. To book a program, please contact Carol Del Guidice, Education Coordinator at 973-655-6941.

Benefits of Gallery VisitsStudents have much to gain by engaging in supplemental educational programs. Students connect directly with ideas and concepts through observation of original works of art. Students will further develop the tools for viewing and understanding art, thereby enhancing their confidence and their ability to articulate ideas. Students return to the classroom with a broadened view of the world. Through gallery visits, tours and workshops, students begin to develop new perspectives, communicate new ideas and explore different cultures and art forms.

Additional events planned in conjunction with this exhibit are listed at montclair.edu/segalgallery. An events pass is available for $50 ($140 value) allowing entry to all events.

A Brief History of the Cosla Collection

In 1962, Dr. and Mrs. Oscar K. Cosla bequeathed to MontclairState University a significant collection of 35 16th- to 19th-century paintings. The origins of this collection are traced to Italy with the de Clerici family, second in stature and wealth to the famed Medici family. The more than 250-year-old collection is a fraction of a much bigger group of works that had been given in 1760 to Anne de Clerici as a dowry for her marriage to William K. Cosla of Romania.

Four generations of Cosla family members built upon the original dowry, amassing many more paintings and other works of art. At some point, the collection was moved to Amsterdam, and was nearly destroyed during World War II. Luckily, the art was transported to San Francisco, where the fourth-generation Mrs. Cosla was born. Ultimately, part of this extraordinary collection made its way to the halls of the Kasser Theater, where they are on permanent display.

December Workshop OptionGroup tours scheduled during the month of December will have the option of constructing a traditional Christmas lantern. Commonly known in the Filipino community as a parol, it is a brightly decorated, star-shaped hanging ornament.

Segal in See-Through Students will view Street Crossing, a George Segal assemblage located in Kasser Plaza and study Segal’s Woman Painting Her Toenails. They will then work in the gallery’s studio to create body wraps, imitating Segal’s method.

Elementary and High School / Tour and Hands-on Workshop

The Art of the Cosla CollectionStudents will view the Cosla paintings and be given a brief history of this collection. There will be discussion about elements of design as evidenced in the paintings as well as religious and spiritual subject matter. We will discuss the ways in which a painter organizes forms within a work of art. Students will bear in mind that forms can be arranged across a surface – or in three-dimensional space. There will be discussion about the importance of the framing of a painting, and how that can have an impact on the painting’s presentation. The students will return to the George Segal Gallery workshop area to organize their own forms on a surface, and experiment with a variety of frames to finish their work.
